Prof. Dr. Raphael Guzman is Professor of Neurosurgery and Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Basel and the University Children’s Hospital of Basel (UKBB). His clinical expertise is in Cerebrovascular and Pediatric Neurosurgery. Prof. Guzman’s research group examines the clinical relevance of neural stem/progenitor cells (NPC) in brain ischemia particularly in neonatal hypoxic-ischemia (HI) with regard to white matter regeneration. He is also deeply involved in advancing novel technologies such as virtual and augmented reality and minimally invasive endoscopy to advance neurosurgical teaching and operative techniques in collaboration with the Department of Bioengineering. His research is funded through the Swiss National Science Foundation and several grants from private foundations as well as industry collaborations.
