Biography

Yet during Medical School at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich I started being interested in translational research and completed my academic training at the Institute of Analytical Pathology of the Helmholtz Research Center in Munich where I first focused my research on gastrointestinal tumors. This work culminated in my PhD thesis (at Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, Germany) on MALDI imaging for biomarker discovery for Barrett’s Carcinoma. In 2018, I successfully finished my postgraduate training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and in 2019 I obtained a Master’s Degree in Advanced Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at the University of Barcelona (Spain). During residency, I focused on clinical research of GI tumors and participated in international multicenter studies on serrated polyposis syndrome (SPS) among other GI tumor syndromes. The End-of-Residency grant “Emili Letang” allowed me to continue with my passion for translational research focusing on epigenetic markers for SPS. In 2019 I was awarded by the Catalan Government and since then I’ve directed my research towards a more basic approach focusing on cutting edge organoid technologies to model the tumor microenvironment with the ultimate goal to test for new directed therapies such as immune checkpoint inhibitors in colorectal cancer. My deep motivation for my research activity is improving current strategies to prevent and to effectively treat and cure GI cancers.
