Feature selection (FS) is a classic and challenging optimization task in the field of machine learning and data mining. An equilibrium optimizer (EO) is a novel physics-based optimization algorithm; it was inspired by controlled volume mass balance models for estimating dynamic and equilibrium states. This article presents two binary equilibrium optimizer algorithm and for selecting the optimal feature subset for classification problems. The first algorithm maps the continuous EO into a discrete type using S-shaped and V-shaped transfer functions (BEO-S and BEO-V). The second algorithm is based on the position of the current optimal solution (target) and position vector (BEO-T). To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, 19 well-known UCI datasets are tested and compared with other advanced FS methods. The experimental results show that among the proposed binary EO algorithms, BEO-V2 has the best comprehensive performance and has better performance than other state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms in terms of the performance measures.

Purpose: This paper aims to represent an improved whale optimization algorithm (WOA) based on a Lévy flight trajectory and called the LWOA algorithm to solve engineering optimization problems. The LWOA makes the WOA faster, more robust and significantly enhances the WOA. In the LWOA, the Lévy flight trajectory enhances the capability of jumping out of the local optima and is helpful for smoothly balancing exploration and exploitation of the WOA. It has been successfully applied to five standard engineering optimization problems. The simulation results of the classical engineering design problems and real application exhibit the superiority of the LWOA algorithm in solving challenging problems with constrained and unknown search spaces when compared to the basic WOA algorithm or other available solutions. Design/methodology/approach: In this paper, an improved WOA based on a Lévy flight trajectory and called the LWOA algorithm is represented to solve engineering optimization problems. Findings: It has been successfully applied to five standard engineering optimization problems. The simulation results of the classical engineering design problems and real application exhibit the superiority of the LWOA algorithm in solving challenging problems with constrained and unknown search spaces when compared to the basic WOA algorithm or other available solutions. Originality value: An improved WOA based on a Lévy flight trajectory and called the LWOA algorithm is first proposed.

Feature selection (FS) is a classic and challenging optimization task in the field of machine learning and data mining. Gradient-based optimizer (GBO) is a recently developed metaheuristic with population-based characteristics inspired by gradient-based Newton's method that uses two main operators: the gradient search rule (GSR), the local escape operator (LEO) and a set of vectors to explore the search space for solving continuous problems. This article presents a binary GBO (BGBO) algorithm and for feature selecting problems. The eight independent GBO variants are proposed, and eight transfer functions divided into two families of S-shaped and V-shaped are evaluated to map the search space to a discrete space of research. To verify the performance of the proposed binary GBO algorithm, 18 well-known UCI datasets and 10 high-dimensional datasets are tested and compared with other advanced FS methods. The experimental results show that among the proposed binary GBO algorithms has the best comprehensive performance and has better performance than other well known metaheuristic algorithms in terms of the performance measures.

In order to solve the inverse kinematics (IK) of complex manipulators efficiently, a hybrid equilibrium optimizer slime mould algorithm (EOSMA) is proposed. Firstly, the concentration update operator of the equilibrium optimizer is used to guide the anisotropic search of the slime mould algorithm to improve the search efficiency. Then, the greedy strategy is used to update the individual and global historical optimal to accelerate the algorithm’s convergence. Finally, the random difference mutation operator is added to EOSMA to increase the probability of escaping from the local optimum. On this basis, a multi-objective EOSMA (MOEOSMA) is proposed. Then, EOSMA and MOEOSMA are applied to the IK of the 7 degrees of freedom manipulator in two scenarios and compared with 15 single-objective and 9 multi-objective algorithms. The results show that EOSMA has higher accuracy and shorter computation time than previous studies. In two scenarios, the average convergence accuracy of EOSMA is 10e−17 and 10e−18, and the average solution time is 0.05 s and 0.36 s, respectively.

Marine Predators algorithm (MPA) is a newly proposed nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm. The main inspiration of this algorithm is based on the extensive foraging strategies of marine organisms, namely Lévy movement and Brownian movement, both of which are based on random strategies. In this paper, we combine the marine predator algorithm with Teaching-learning-based optimization algorithm, and propose a hybrid algorithm called Teaching-learning-based Marine Predator algorithm (TLMPA). Teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm consists of two phases: the teacher phase and the learner phase. Combining these two phases with the original MPA enables the predators to obtain prey information for foraging by learning from teachers and interactive learning, thus greatly increasing the encounter rate between predators and prey. In addition, effective mutation and crossover strategies were added to increase the diversity of predators and effectively avoid premature convergence. For performance evaluation TLMPA algorithm, it has been applied to IEEE CEC-2017 benchmark functions and four engineering design problems. The experimental results show that among the proposed TLMPA algorithm has the best comprehensive performance and has more outstanding performance than other the state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms in terms of the performance measures.
