Pilonidal disease has been treated surgically and by various other methods for many years. The most important problem associated with such treatment is recurrence, but cosmetic outcome is another important issue that cannot be ignored. Today, crystallized phenol is recognized as a treatment option associated with good medical and cosmetic outcomes. We hypothesized that the addition of laser depilation to crystallized phenol treatment of pilonidal disease might increase the rate of success, and this study aimed to determine if the hypothesis was true. Patients who were treated with crystallized phenol and 755-nm alexandrite laser depilation were retrospectively analyzed. In total, 42 (31 male and 11 female) patients were treated with crystallized phenol and alexandrite laser depilation and were followed up between January 2009 and January 2012. In all, 38 patients (90.5%) had chronic disease and 4 (9.5%) had recurrent disease. Among the patients, 26 (61.9%) recovered following 1 crystallized phenol treatment, and the remaining patients had complete remission following repeated treatment. Some patients needed multiple treatments, even up to 8 times. None of the patients had a recurrence during a mean 24 months (range, 6–30 months) of follow-up. Whatever method of treatment is used for pilonidal disease, hair cleaning positively affects treatment outcome. The present results support the hypothesis that the addition of laser depilation (which provides more permanent and effective depilation than other methods) to crystallized phenol treatment (a non-radical, minimally invasive method associated with very good cosmetic results) can increase the effectiveness of the treatment and also reduce the recurrence rate of the disease.
Background/Objectives: Early detection and diagnosis are important when treating gallbladder (GB) diseases. Poorer clinical outcomes and increased patient symptoms may result from any error or delay in diagnosis. Many signs and symptoms, especially those related to GB diseases with similar symptoms, may be unclear. Therefore, highly qualified medical professionals should interpret and understand ultrasound images. Considering that diagnosis via ultrasound imaging can be time- and labor-consuming, it may be challenging to finance and benefit from this service in remote locations. Methods: Today, artificial intelligence (AI) techniques ranging from machine learning (ML) to deep learning (DL), especially in large datasets, can help analysts using Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) systems with the early diagnosis, treatment, and recognition of diseases, and then provide effective methods for a medical diagnosis. Results: The developed model is compared with two different textural and six different Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models accepted in the literature—the developed model combines features obtained from three different pre-trained architectures for feature extraction. The cosine method was preferred as the similarity measurement metric. Conclusions: Our proposed CBIR model achieved successful results from six other different models. The AP value obtained in the proposed model is 0.94. This value shows that our CBIR-based model can be used to detect GB diseases.

Objective: To investigate markers of systemic inflammation and the effect of thyroid dysfunction on these parameters in patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT). Methods: Patients with HT and volunteer healthy individuals admitted to the general surgery outpatient clinic between January 2020 and June 2023 were enrolled into the study. Patients with HT were divided into euthyroid, hypothyroid, and hyperthyroid subgroups. All participant data were retrospectively extracted from the hospital database. Results: A total of 268 patients (euthyroid, n = 131; hypothyroid, n = 83; and hyperthyroid, n = 54) and 124 controls were included. The platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio was lower in the euthyroid group versus control group, and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was lower in controls than the three patient subgroups. Euthyroid and hypothyroid patients with HT exhibited a higher systemic inflammation index than the control group. The pan-immune inflammation index was lower in controls than in euthyroid, hypothyroid, and hyperthyroid patients with HT. In patients with HT, inflammation markers did not significantly differ between subgroups. Conclusions: Markers of systemic inflammation provide meaningful and reliable information in patients with HT, but do not differentiate between euthyroid, hypothyroid, or hyperthyroid patients.
