Biography

Dr. Giovanni Crisafulli is Head of the Computational Oncology and Bioinformatics Unit at IFOM ETS – The AIRC Institute of Molecular Oncology in Milan, Italy. He is a translational computational genomics scientist working at the interface between cancer biology, bioinformatics, liquid biopsy and precision oncology. He received his BSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Messina in 2007, his MSc in Bioinformatics from the University of Siena in 2008, and his PhD in Mathematical Logic, Computer Science and Bioinformatics from the same institution in 2012. His research focuses on how cancers evolve under therapeutic pressure, acquire drug resistance and develop clinically actionable vulnerabilities. He integrates genomic analyses of patient-derived samples, preclinical models and clinical-trial data. He has contributed to studies using circulating tumor DNA to monitor clonal evolution, tumor heterogeneity and treatment resistance in colorectal cancer and other solid tumors, including HERACLES, CHRONOS, ARETHUSA and PEGASUS. His research also covers adaptive mutability, therapy-induced mutagenesis, mutational signatures, DNA repair alterations, tumor mutational burden, neoantigen generation and immune surveillance. As Head of the Unit, he leads a translational R&D program focused on reproducible NGS workflows, liquid biopsy, minimal residual disease, tumor evolution and clinic-molecular data integration.
