A mechanical amplifier is an important device, which together with a piezoelectric actuator can achieve motion with high resolution and long range. In this paper, a new topology based on a symmetric five-bar structure for displacement amplification is proposed, and a compliant mechanism is implemented for the amplifier. In short, the new mechanical amplifier is called a compliant mechanical amplifier (CMA). The proposed CMA can achieve large amplification ratio and high natural frequency, as opposed to the existing CMAs, in terms of topology. Detailed analysis with finite element method has further shown that a double symmetric beam five-bar structure using corner-filleted hinges can provide good performances compared with its counterpart, which is based on four-bar topology. Finally, experiments are conducted to give some validation of the theoretical analysis.
Gain tuning is very important in order to obtain good performances for a given controller. Contour tracking performance is mainly determined by the selected control gains of a position domain PID controller. In this paper, three popular evolutionary algorithms are utilized to optimize the gains of a position domain PID controller for performance improvement of contour tracking of robotic manipulators. Differential Evolution (DE), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are used to determine the optimal gains of the position domain PID controller, and three distinct fitness functions are also used to quantify the contour tracking performance of each solution set. Simulation results show that DE features the highest performance indexes for both linear and nonlinear contour tracking, while PSO is quite efficient for linear contour tracking. Both algorithms performed consistently better than GA that featured premature convergence in all cases.
Quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have attracted considerable interest for various applications including search and rescue, environmental monitoring, and surveillance because of their agilities and small sizes. This paper proposes trajectory tracking control of UAVs utilizing online iterative learning control (ILC) methods that are known to be powerful for tasks performed repeatedly. PD online ILC and switching gain PD online ILC are used to perform a variety of manoeuvring such as take-off, smooth translation, and various circular trajectory motions in two and three dimensions. Simulation results prove the ability and effectiveness of the online ILCs to perform successfully certain missions in the presence of disturbances and uncertainties. It also demonstrates that the switching gain PD ILC is much effective than the PD online ILC in terms of fast convergence rates and smaller tracking errors.
SUMMARY: Accurate contour tracking is one of the main tasks in modern manufacturing processes. By considering coupling effects among multiple axes, this paper proposes a cross-coupled proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control developed in position domain, and the controller is applied to a multi-axis computer numerical control (CNC) machine for contour tracking performance improvement. Stability analysis is conducted for the developed position domain cross-coupled PID control using the Lyapunov method, and guidelines for the selection of control gains are provided. The contour tracking performance are improved compared to an equivalent time domain controller, since the reference axis in position domain control does not contribute any error to the overall contouring error of the system. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of cross-coupled PID position domain control for both linear and circular contour tracking, and prove the robustness of the controller to deal with random disturbances. It also shows that position domain cross-coupled PID control provides better contour tracking performance over position domain PID control and the equivalent time domain PID control.
In this paper, a new position domain feedback type sliding mode control (PDC-SMC) law is proposed for contour tracking control of multi-DOF (degree of freedom) nonlinear robotic manipulators focusing on the improvement of contour tracking performances. One feature of the proposed control law is its model-independent control scheme that can avoid calculation of the feedforward part in a standard SMC. The new control law takes the advantages of the high contour tracking performance of PD type feedback position domain control (PDC) and the robustness of SMC. Stability analysis is performed using the Lyapunov stability theory, and simulation studies are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the developed PDC-SMC control system. In addition, the effects of control parameters of the SMC on system performances are studied.
