The objective of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of oregano essential oil (OEO) as a phytogenic feed additive in the diet of lambs on the productive performance, ruminal pH, ammoniacal nitrogen production, volatile fatty acids, nitrogen balance, carcass yield, backfat thickness, loin eye (Longissimus dorsi) area, shelf life, and antioxidant activity of the meat. Thirty-nine Suffolk × Hampshire lambs (19 ± 3.7 kg live weight) were used in a completely randomized design with three treatments (n = 13) consisting of 0, 0.02, and 0.04% OEO in the diet. The inclusion of OEO in the diet did not affect (p > 0.05) the productive performance due to the treatments; similarly, no differences (p > 0.05) were observed in the ruminal variables and nitrogen balance. Backfat thickness and loin eye area had similar results (p > 0.05), and the antioxidant activity in meat was improved (p < 0.05) with the inclusion of OEO. Shelf life and crude protein content increased (p < 0.05) with the inclusion of OEO in the diet and with the passing of storage days. Dry matter was affected (p < 0.05) by the storage time, with a decrease observed on day 24. pH, ether extract, and ash were not affected (p > 0.05). It is concluded that the productive performance, ruminal variables, nitrogen balance, loin eye area, backfat thickness, and carcass yield were not affected by the inclusion of OEO. However, crude protein remained stable and antioxidant activity improved, increasing the shelf life of lamb meat.

Introduction. The High Mountain Region (RHM) is the most productive and socioeconomic region for the coffee cultivation in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, and one of the most representative of the sector at the national level. Objective. To determine the quality of life (QL) from the objective and subjective point of view of the small coffee producers (SP) in RHM, Mexico. Materials and methods. One hundred and fifty semi-structured interviews were applied to producers in eleven municipalities located in: Comapa, Coscomatepec, Huatusco, Ixhuatlán del café, Sochiapa, Tenampa, Tomatlán, Totutla, Tlaltetela, Tlacotepec, and Zentla, during 2020. Descriptive statistics and trend measurements were obtained. Results. At objective level the QL was found to be low, but at the farmers’ subjective level, it was determined to be acceptable. In the objective assessment, it was identified that the SP have minimal education (primary), the income is not adequate (they require activities outside the farm with an average net annual income of US $ 416 to US $ 1115), the cost of health has increased (due to the COVID-19 pandemic), and proper nutrition is lacking (19 to 25 meals per month). In the subjective assessment there is insecurity and distrust with the government authorities, however, the producers have adapted to living in adverse socioeconomic contexts, since they value community life, intra-family relationships and their environment (coffee growing), which could be influenced by their own worldview. Conclusion. With or without knowledge of the concept of quality, producers have developed a learned or acquired capacity, both individually and collectively to adapt to the environment. Objectively, the quality of life is considered low, however, the interviewees had a perception of satisfaction both individually and collectively.

Due to the importance of the rural sector for the country, it is important to generate analysis and reflection on the challenge posed by the health and economic crisis brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. The rural sector will undoubtedly be among those most affected, given the structural problems that it already faced before the onset of the pandemic. To that end, a literature review was carried out, as well as statistical analysis based on information provided by the state and international organizations. The participation and interaction between academia, the government, the business community and the rural population is necessary for the redesign of public policies adapted to the “new normal.”

Coffee pulp has been included in ruminant diets; but until now, little has been known about how the addition of ensiled coffee pulp (ECP) affects the growth performance of lambs. This study explores the diet’s antioxidant capacity, tannins, and caffeine concentration and its effect on water intake, growth performance, rumen variables, in vivo digestibility, nitrogen balance, and carcass and meat characteristics of lambs fed ECP. Thirty-six male Pelibuey lambs were distributed randomly to one of three treatments (n = 12): without ECP0; diet with 10% ECP10, and diet with 20% ECP20. The diets’ antioxidant capacity, tannins, and caffeine concentration were similar (p > 0.05) for all treatments. The diets’ antioxidant compounds and the blood serum’s antioxidant capacity were affected (p < 0.05). Dry matter and water intake, body-weight gain, and feed conversion were not significant (p > 0.05). No differences (p > 0.05) were found in the rumen variables or the nitrogen balance. However, the in vivo digestibility of crude protein was affected (p < 0.05). Carcass and meat quality were not affected (p > 0.05) by the inclusion of ECP, except temperature and redness (a*) at seven days of storage, respectively. Including up to 20% of ECP in the diet of lambs did not affect the growth performance, rumen variables, or nitrogen balance; however, the antioxidant compounds of the diets, the antioxidant capacity in blood serum, and the in vivo digestibility of crude protein were different. There was an increase in the redness (a*) and lower temperature in the Longissimus dorsi muscle, keeping lightness (L*), yellowness (b*), water-holding capacity, and texture at seven storage days.

Medicinal plants (HMS) have been part of everyday life in Mexico, despite being popular, little has been documented about their knowledge and use. A diagnosis was made to know the perception of the general public, housewives, doctors, teachers and people dedicated to herbalism about medicinal plants (HMS). The instruments of the poll (100), the survey (130), the census (37) and the interview (6) were used in the sectors of the population mentioned above. Descriptive statistics and measures of central tendency were used. It is a transgenerational knowledge, transmitted verbally and is part of everyday life. Its use is through infusions (tea) fordiseases considered mild. This knowledge has been relegated to the elderly and people with less purchasing power. However, 100% of the surveyed population knows and/or has used HMS. As empirical knowledge becomes scientific, it will be possible to know its effects on human health, therefore, it is important to carry out experimental studies on the biological effects of plants. In this way, its use could be further expanded through appropriate public policies.

Agaricus is one of the most diverse genera within basidiomycetes with more than 600 described species. Agaricus subg. Minoriopsis includes two sections, A. sect. Kerrigania and A. sect. Minoriopsis, with species that have a preferential distribution in (sub-)tropical areas exclusively in the Americas. So far, the species diversity of Agaricus is little studied in Mexico. With our continuing surveys of Agaricus in (sub-)tropical regions of Mexico, some of its hidden diversity has come to light. In this paper, we describe two new species of A. subg. Minoriopsis: A. calolepidotus and A. xalapensis, using a combined approach of morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses. Full descriptions, photo plates and comparisons with other similar species are provided.
