This paper presents a MATLAB-based tutorial to conduct fault diagnosis of a rolling element bearing. While there have been so many new developments in this field, no studies have addressed the tutorial aspects in this field to help the engineers learn the concept and implement by their own effort. The three most common techniques—the autoregressive model, spectral kurtosis, and envelope analysis—are selected to demonstrate the bearing diagnosis process. Simulation signal is introduced to help understand the characteristics of fault signal and carry out the process toward the fault identification. The techniques are then applied to the two real datasets to demonstrate the practical applications, one made by the authors and the other by the Case Western Reserve University, which is known as a standard reference in testing the diagnostic algorithms.

This research presents a new method of degradation feature extraction to predict remaining useful life, the remaining time to the maintenance, of rolling element bearings. Since bearing fault is the foremost cause of failure in rotating machinery, there are many studies for evaluating bearings’ health status to prevent a catastrophic failure. Most of these studies are based on health monitoring data, such as vibration signals that are indirectly related to bearing fault, from which degradation feature can be extracted. It is, however, challenging to extract a degradation feature that can be applied to all rolling elements. This study focuses on the amplitude decrease at specific frequencies, from which a robust degradation feature is extracted by employing the information entropy. Some important attributes are found from the degradation feature, which is used to predict the remaining useful life of bearings. This method is demonstrated using the real test data provided by FEMTO-ST Institute. The results show that bearings can be used up to 87% of their whole life and 59%–74% of life in average.

This paper proposes a deep learning-based anomaly detection method using time-series vibration and current data, which were obtained from endurance tests on driving modules applied in industrial robots and machine systems. Unlike traditional classification models that depend on labeled fault data for detection, acquiring sufficient fault data in real industrial environments is highly challenging due to various conditions and constraints. To address this issue, we employ a semi-supervised learning approach that relies solely on normal data to effectively detect abnormal patterns, overcoming the limitations of conventional methods. The performance of semi-supervised models was first validated using a statistical feature-based anomaly detection approach, from which the GCN-VAE model was adopted. By combining the spatial feature extraction capability of Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) with the latent temporal feature modeling of Variational Autoencoders (VAEs), our method can effectively detect abnormal signs in the data, particularly in the lead-up to system failures. The experimental results confirmed that the proposed GCN-VAE model outperformed existing hybrid deep learning models in terms of anomaly detection performance in the pre-failure section.

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and an increasing demand for redundant robotic systems, robot control systems are becoming increasingly complex. Although forward kinematics (FK) and inverse kinematics (IK) equations have been used as basic and perfect solutions for robot posture control, both equations have a significant drawback. When a robotic system is highly nonlinear, it is difficult or impossible to derive both the equations. In this paper, we propose a new method that can replace both the FK and IK equations of a seven-degrees-of-freedom (7-DOF) robot manipulator. This method is based on reinforcement learning (RL) and artificial neural networks (ANN) for supervised learning (SL). RL was used to acquire training datasets consisting of six posture data in Cartesian space and seven motor angle data in joint space. The ANN is used to make the discrete training data continuous, which implies that the trained ANN infers any new data. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the proposed method were performed through computer simulation. The results show that the proposed method is sufficient to control the robot manipulator as efficiently as the IK equation.
