Arbitrary-oriented object detection is an important task in the field of remote sensing object detection. Existing studies have shown that the polar coordinate system has obvious advantages in dealing with the problem of rotating object modeling, that is, using fewer parameters to achieve more accurate rotating object detection. However, present state-of-the-art detectors based on deep learning are all modeled in Cartesian coordinates. In this article, we introduce the polar coordinate system to the deep learning detector for the first time, and propose an anchor free Polar Remote Sensing Object Detector (P-RSDet), which can achieve competitive detection accuracy via using simpler object representation model and less regression parameters. In P-RSDet method, arbitrary-oriented object detection can be achieved by predicting the center point and regressing one polar radius and two polar angles. Besides, in order to express the geometric constraint relationship between the polar radius and the polar angle, a Polar Ring Area Loss function is proposed to improve the prediction accuracy of the corner position. Experiments on DOTA, UCAS-AOD and NWPU VHR-10 datasets show that our P-RSDet achieves state-of-the-art performances with simpler model and less regression parameters.

Two-stage remote sensing image captioning (RSIC) methods have achieved promising results by incorporating additional pre-trained remote sensing tasks to extract supplementary information and improve caption quality. However, these methods face limitations in semantic comprehension, as pre-trained detectors/classifiers are constrained by predefined labels, leading to an oversight of the intricate and diverse details present in remote sensing images (RSIs). Additionally, the handling of auxiliary remote sensing tasks separately can introduce challenges in ensuring seamless integration and alignment with the captioning process. To address these problems, we propose a novel cross-modal retrieval and semantic refinement (CRSR) RSIC method. Specifically, we employ a cross-modal retrieval model to retrieve relevant sentences of each image. The words in these retrieved sentences are then considered as primary semantic information, providing valuable supplementary information for the captioning process. To further enhance the quality of the captions, we introduce a semantic refinement module that refines the primary semantic information, which helps to filter out misleading information and emphasize visually salient semantic information. A Transformer Mapper network is introduced to expand the representation of image features beyond the retrieved supplementary information with learnable queries. Both the refined semantic tokens and visual features are integrated and fed into a cross-modal decoder for caption generation. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate the superiority of our CRSR method over existing state-of-the-art approaches on the RSICD, the UCM-Captions, and the Sydney-Captions datasets

Few-shot object detection in remote sensing imagery faces significant challenges, including limited labeled samples, complex scene backgrounds, and subtle inter-class differences. To tackle these issues, we design a novel detection framework that effectively transfers supervision from a few annotated support examples to the query domain. We introduce a feature enhancement mechanism that injects fine-grained support cues into the query representation, helping the model focus on relevant regions and suppress background noise. This allows the model to generate more accurate proposals and perform robust classification, especially for visually confusing or small objects. Additionally, our method enhances feature interaction between support and query images through a nonlinear combination strategy, which captures both semantic similarity and discriminative differences. The proposed framework is fully end-to-end and jointly optimizes the feature fusion and detection processes. Experiments on three challenging benchmarks, NWPU VHR-10, iSAID and DIOR, demonstrate that our method consistently achieves state-of-the-art results under different few-shot settings and category splits. Compared with other advanced methods, it yields superior performance, highlighting its strong generalization ability in low-data remote sensing scenarios.

Vehicle detection in remote sensing imagery is a challenging task because of its inherent attributes, e.g., dense parking, small sizes, various angles, etc. Prevalent vehicle detectors adopt an oriented/rotated bounding box as a basic representation, which needs to apply a distance regression of height, width, and angles of objects. These distance-regression-based detectors suffer from two challenges: (1) the periodicity of the angle causes a discontinuity of regression values, and (2) small regression deviations may also cause objects to be missed. To this end, in this paper, we propose a new vehicle modeling strategy, i.e., regarding each vehicle-rotated bounding box as a saliency area. Based on the new representation, we propose SR-Net (saliency region representation network), which transforms the vehicle detection task into a saliency object detection task. The proposed SR-Net, running in a distance (e.g., height, width, and angle)-regression-free way, can generate more accurate detection results. Experiments show that SR-Net outperforms prevalent detectors on multiple benchmark datasets. Specifically, our model yields 52.30%, 62.44%, 68.25%, and 55.81% in terms of AP on DOTA, UCAS-AOD, DLR 3K Munich, and VEDAI, respectively.

In the realm of remote sensing image object detection compression distillation, establishing an efficient method for instance feature knowledge transfer between teacher and student models holds paramount importance. To this end, this paper introduces an innovative deep structured instance graph distillation method that endeavors to delve into the underlying information between instance features, thereby optimizing detection performance. Specifically, our proposed method incorporates feature instances and their relations into a graph-based structure (SIG). In this graph, feature instances serve as the nodes, while the relations between them serve as the edges. This structure enables us to capture both the individual significance of each feature instance and their collective influence within the context. Furthermore, in the experiment, we found that the index of some dense and small-target objects did not improve much because the edge assembly generated by a large number of background feature nodes in the SIG module inhibited the loss. To address the perennial imbalance between foreground and background features, we introduce an adaptive background feature mining strategy. Through carefully calibrated weights, this strategy effectively extracts and integrates background information, thereby minimizing noise interference in detection results and augmenting the expressive capacity of foreground features. We achieved state-of-the-art results on both the challenging DIOR and DOTA datasets, with the two-stage Oriented RCNN-based student Resnet18 model achieving a 73.23 mAP on the DOTA benchmark, close to the teacher Resnet101’s 76.16. In addition, on the DIOR dataset, the student Resnet18 based on the two-stage Faster RCNN achieved 70.13 mAP, higher than the baseline 66.31, and the student Resnet50 achieved 72.28, higher than the teacher’s 72.25.
