The complexity of spatial use has an impact on poverty and the development of slum settlements towards a decrease in environmental quality. In this study, we aim to analyze (1) urbanization and spatial expansion as determinants of spatial dynamics in suburban areas, (2) the effect of spatial expansion, land use change, population increase, and spatial activity patterns on the development of slum settlements, and (3) the relationship between control of spatial planning, handling land reclamation, and improving the quality of infrastructure with improving the quality of the environment and the sustainability of handling slum settlements in the suburbs. We use a sequential explanatory design, which is a combination of quantitative and qualitative research, and data are obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, surveys, and documentation. The results showed that slum settlements in watersheds and coastal areas as well as inadequate support for infrastructure services resulted in excessive groundwater use, soil pollution, and surface water quality pollution resulting in less smooth river flow regulation, lowering of water levels, urban flooding, and disease transmission. Weak control over spatial use, utilization of water catchment areas, and the inadequate fulfillment of slum settlement infrastructure services cause a decrease in environmental quality. These results indicate that it is very important to deal with slum settlements in a sustainable manner, including spatial use and environmental, economic, and social aspects. This study recommends that the handling of slum settlements requires policy support from the government in an effort, to meet the city target without slums by 2030 in Makassar City, Indonesia.

Metropolitan Urban Mamminasata South Sulawesi, Indonesia as the object of study is explored in the core-peripheral spatial interaction towards the formation of suburban service centers. The problems raised in this study are (i) is there a relationship/correlation between spatial integration, spatial interaction, and urban agglomeration to the formation of urban activity systems and (ii) how the formation of urban activity systems works as a determinant of economic growth, land use change and environmental quality degradation towards sustainable development in the metropolitan city of Mamminasata. Comparative studies of suburban areas have been carried out over three time periods (2001, 2015 and 2019). Data elaboration on observations, surveys and documentation is done to describe urban dynamics in terms of economic, social and environmental aspects. Path analysis is used to address direct effects, indirect effects, differences, and dependencies between urban elements. The gravity model is used to analyze the spatial interactions of the core city with the periphery. The study results show that spatial integration, spatial interaction and urban agglomeration have a positive effect on the system of urban activity and economic growth in the outskirts of the Mamminasata Metropolitan area. The results of this study recommend policy makers and urban planners that land use change, spatial integration and urban spatial interactions on the spatial scale of metropolitan cities to require the implementation of sustainable development concepts oriented towards saving the environment, ensuring fairness in economic access and creating social cohesion, in line with meeting national Metropolitan city development targets by 2030.

In this study, 3D electronic-photonic integrated circuits (EPIC) packaging using through silicon vias (TSV) has been demonstrated. Silicon photonic integrated circuit (Si-PIC) in SOI which has TSV for electrical interconnection is flip-chip bonded on a Si interposer using electrochemical plating (ECP) bumps of 90 μm-diameter in this 3D EPIC packaging. A 750 Ω-cm of high-resistivity SOI and silicon wafers are used for PIC chip with TSV and interposer respectively. Measured insertion loss (S21) for the 3D EPIC packaged test vehicle using TSV is less than 3.5dB and return loss (S11) is less than -13dB up to 50 GHz. This high-bandwidth 3D EPIC packaging platform can be applied for the system-on-packaging (SOP) modules and subsystems such as optical transceiver (TRx) and radioover-fiber (ROF) solutions.

The study aims at analyzing change of spatial physical, spatial articulation, spatial structure, social and agglomeration and deagglomeration of function in the dynamics of development in the fringe area of Hertasning-Samata, Makassar City. Spatial physical changes are designated by the presence of new socio-economic functions that drive spatial structure changes, spatial articulation, social changes and agglomeration/deagglomeration of function in the fringe area of Hertasning-Samata. It applies quantitative and qualitative approaches (mixed method). Data is acquired from some sources and community informants living in the fringe area of Hertasning-Samata, Makassar City. Rapid and revolutionary spatial physical changes contribute positively to spatial structure changes, spatial pattern, agglomeration/ deagglomeration of area function. Spatial function change which had been dominated by commercial function becomes the determinant of social changes in the fringe area of Hertasning-Samata. Domination of mastery of reproduction of space by capitalism shows differences in mastery of reproduction of space significantly between space of capitalism and space of pre-capitalism. It sharpens economic stratum, status differences, between space of capitalism and space of pre-capitalism and socio-community classes. The dynamic of spatial physical change causes orientation shift to community activity which had run along dialetic of modernity and rationalization of action in local community.

The study aims at analyzing process of urbanization and spatial articulation as the determinant of social change, and finding out social capital differences between migrant and local community in the dynamics of new city development in Metro Tanjung Bunga area. The findings show that spatial articulation in Metro Tanjung Bunga area was initiated by the development of new functions as a stimulating factor of urbanization and infiltrative and expansive migration to Metro Tanjung Bunga area. Spatial articulation causes coexistence of two kinds of mode of production in mastery of reproduction of space which is dominated by capitalist mode of production. It also has an effect of social change and social capital difference between migrant and local community. Occupational differentiation drives process of social interaction between local community and migrant in purpose to establish social relationship and social relations. Economically, the establishment is integrative for basic needs compliance and in effort to maintain existence of local community. Social change portrays differences of social capital, social order and life style between expansive migrant, infiltrative migrant and local community.
