In this work, the experimental investigations were piloted to study the influence of hybrid nanoparticles containing SiO2 and CeO2 nanoparticles on thermo-physical characteristics of the paraffin-based phase change material (PCM). Initially, the hybrid nanoparticles were prepared by blending equal mass of SiO2 and CeO2 nanoparticles. The hybrid-nano/paraffin (HnP) samples were prepared by cautiously dispersing 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 percentage mass of hybrid nanoparticles inside the paraffin, respectively. The synthesized samples were examined under different instruments such as field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and thermal properties analyzer to ascertain the influence of hybrid nanoparticles on thermo-physical characteristics of the prepared samples. The obtained experimental results proved that the hybrid nanoparticles were uniformly diffused in the paraffin matrix without affecting the chemical arrangement of paraffin molecules. Prominently, the relative thermal stability and relative thermal conductivity of the paraffin were synergistically enriched up to 115.49% and 165.56%, respectively, when dispersing hybrid nanoparticles within paraffin. Furthermore, the hybrid nanoparticles appropriately amended the melting and crystallization point of the paraffin to reduce its supercooling, and the maximum reduction in supercooling was ascertained as 35.81%. The comprehensive studies indicated that the paraffin diffused with SiO2 and CeO2 hybrid nanoparticles at 1.0 mass percentage would yield a better outcome compared to the next higher mass fractions without much diminishing the latent heat of paraffin. Hence, it is recommended to utilize the hybrid-nano/paraffin with 1.0 mass fraction of the aforementioned hybrid nanoparticles for effectively augmenting the thermal energy capacity of low-temperature solar thermal systems.

This paper investigates the influence of low mass% SiO2 nanoparticles on the thermal properties of the paraffin wax for solar thermal energy storage applications. The four nano-SiO2/paraffin PCM samples containing, 0.0 mass%, 0.5 mass%, 1.0 mass%, and 2.0 mass% of SiO2 nanoparticles in paraffin wax were synthesized. The prepared nano-SiO2/paraffin PCMs were investigated with different experimental techniques to assess their thermal properties and physical structure. The analysis evidenced that the fusion of SiO2 nanoparticles with paraffin wax was homogeneous, and they enhanced the thermal conductivity of paraffin wax to 12.78%, 22.78%, and 33.34%, respectively, with the aforementioned mass% of SiO2 nanoparticles. Likewise, the dispersion of SiO2 nanoparticles prolonged the thermal degradation of paraffin wax without disturbing its chemical structure and also altered the melting and solidification temperature of the paraffin in a favorable manner. However, the latent heat of the paraffin wax was decreased with the increasing mass% of the nanoparticles and decrement is noteworthy for more than 1.0 mass% of SiO2 nanoparticles in paraffin wax. Altogether, the outcomes revealed that the enhancement of thermal properties were significant, when paraffin wax is supplemented with lowest mass% of SiO2 nanoparticles and to be appropriate for enhanced thermal energy storage.

The semi-transparent photovoltaic (STPV) module is an emerging technology to harness the solar energy in the building. Nowadays, buildings are turning from energy consumers to energy producers due to the integration of the STPV module on the building envelopes and facades. In this research, the STPV module was integrated on the rooftop window of the experimental room at Kovilpatti (9°10′0″ N, 77°52′0″ E), Tamil Nadu, India. The performance of the STPV modules varies with respect to the geographical location, incident solar radiation, and surface temperature of the module. The surface temperature of the STPV module was regulated by the introduction of the mixture of graphene oxide and sodium sulphate decahydrate (Na2SO4·10H2O). The various concentration of the graphene oxide was mixed together with the Na2SO4·10H2O to enhance the thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of the mixture 0.3 concentration was found to be optimum from the analysis. The instantaneous peak temperature of the semi-transparent photovoltaic phase change material (STPV-PCM) module was reduced to 9 °C during summer compared to the reference STPV. At the same time, the energy conversion efficiency was increased by up to 9.4% compared to the conventional STPV module. Due to the incorporation of the graphene oxide and Na2SO4·10H2O, the daily output power production of the STPV module was improved by 12.16%.

This work explores the opportunities to address the setback in thermal energy storage of solar-based water heaters by uniting it with a suitable hybrid-nano composite phase change material (HNCPCM) in a static mode of operation. The experiments were conducted on a natural circulation all-glass evacuated solar water heating system (AGSWH). The investigation was steered in five cases such that the first case without any phase change material (PCM), the second with pure paraffin as PCM, and remaining three cases with three different mass percentage of HNCPCMs (0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% mass fraction of hybrid nanoparticles within PCM) in real-time solar exposure. The system was analyzed based on the first and second law of thermodynamics to assess the performance in all the five cases. Erstwhile, the hybrid nanoparticles were prepared by blending equal mass of SiO2 and CeO2 nanoparticles and characterized to gauge its thermal storage properties. The achieved results substantiated that the thermal conductivity had boosted with the accumulation of hybrid nanoparticles within the paraffin matrix, and maximum enhancement of 65.56% was attained with 2.0% mass fraction. The first law and second law investigations revealed that the incorporation of hybrid-nano composites improved the energy and exergy content of the system, distinctly. Among the experimented cases, HNCPCM with 1.0 mass% of hybrid nanoparticles remarkably yielded a better result of 19.4% and 1.28% improvement in energy and exergy efficiencies, respectively. Besides, it evidenced the necessity of choosing the right quantity of nanoparticles for achieving better overall results.

There is more demand for natural fiber‐reinforced composites in the energy sector, and their impact on the environment is almost zero. Natural fiber has plenty of advantages, such as easy recycling and degrading property, low density, and low price. Natural fiber’s thermal properties and flexural properties are less than conventional fiber. This work deals with the changes in the thermal properties and mechanical properties of S‐glass reinforced with a sodium hydroxide‐treated pineapple leaf (PALF) and banana stem fibers. Banana stem and pineapple leaf fibers (PALF) were used at various volume fractions, i.e., 30%, 40%, and 50%, and various fiber lengths of 20 cm, 30 cm, and 40 cm with S‐glass, and their effects on the thermal and mechanical properties were studied, and their optimum values were found. It was evidenced that increasing the fiber volume and fiber length enhanced the flexural and thermal properties up to 40% of the fiber volume, and started to decrease at 50% of the fiber volume. The fiber length provides an affirmative effect on the flexural properties and a pessimistic effect on the thermal properties. The PALF S‐glass combination of 40% fiber load and 40 cm fiber length provides maximum flexural strength, flexural modulus, storage modulus, and lowest loss modulus based on hybrid Taguchi grey relational optimization techniques. PALF S‐glass hybrid composite has been found to have 7.80%, 3.44%, 1.17% higher flexural strength, flexural modulus, and loss modulus, respectively, and 15.74% lower storage modulus compared to banana S‐glass hybrid composite.
