To evaluate the association of leisure-time physical activity and sedentary behavior with body image concern and satisfaction in Brazilian adolescents. Data were extracted from the 2015 Brazilian National Adolescent School-based Health Survey (Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde do Escolar [PeNSE]). Information regarding body image concern and satisfaction, as well as exposures (physical activity and sedentary behavior) and covariates (maternal education, age, smoking, and alcohol intake), were assessed through a questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis revealed that engagement in recommended levels of physical activity (≥ 300 min/week) was associated with a decreased concern with body image and a high satisfaction in boys. Four or more hours spent in sedentary activities were associated with increased concern with body image and dissatisfaction among boys and girls. These findings support the relevance of programs aiming to promote physical activity and reduce sedentary behavior in the adolescent population. Such programs play a protective role against body dissatisfaction and are important for the development of a healthy body image in adolescence.

The aim of this study was to evaluate how accurate is a smartphone app to measure a physical activity parameter (steps). Physical Education undergraduate students (n = 46), both male and female, were recruited. A tally counter, a validated device (Xiaomi Mi Band 2®) and My Active Life app were used to perform the steps count. Each participant took three low-intensity treadmill walks (5 km h−1), with a number of target steps (500-, 1000- and 1500-steps walk). Visual agreement analyses was performed through Bland-Altman plots. There was no significant interaction between steps walks and device during treadmill walking test (F(2,84) = 3.854; p = 0.07). Differences in steps measured by Mi Band were not different from 0 in 500-steps walk (p = 0.243) and 1000-steps walk (p = 0.350), and in My Active Life in 500-steps walk (p = 0.177) and 1500-steps walk (p = 0.221). Bland-Altman analyses indicated an acceptable agreement between My active Life app and Mi Band devices for 1000-steps walk (−359.01; 310.43) and 1500-steps walk (−572.97; 377.11). In conclusion, My Active Life app showed accuracy in measuring total steps, in longer walking activities (e.g. higher than 1000 steps), and can be used on a daily basis and in research setting.

The objective was to identify the impact of social distance in the management of noncommunicable diseases (NCD) in the adult population from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. This is an ambispective, population-based cohort study. Descriptive analysis and Poisson regression models were used and the results were reported as prevalence ratio and 95% confidence intervals. From a total of 1,288 participants, 43.1% needed medical care and 28.5% reported impaired management of NCDs during social distance. Female sex, age between 18 and 30 years old, living in the Serra region (central region of the state), people with depression and multimorbidity were more likely to have impaired management of NCDs. Being physically active reduced the probability of having impaired management of NCD by 15%. Reduced monthly income was associated with the difficulty in accessing prescription medicine and avoidance of seeking in-person medical assistance. Depression was associated with difficulties in accessing medications, while avoidance of seeking in-person medical assistance was more likely for people with multimorbidity, arthritis/arthrosis/fibromyalgia, heart disease, and high cholesterol.

Objective: To describe the socioeconomic, behavioral, clinical, and health-related characteristics of Brazilian older adults with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods: Baseline data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging were analyzed. This nationwide survey interviewed 9,412 adults aged at least 50 years. Self-reported medical diagnosis of AD and exposure variables (sociodemographic, clinical, behavioral, and health-related) were assessed by face-to-face questionnaire-based interview. Multivariate analyses accounted for possible confounding factors, and values were reported in prevalence ratio (PR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI). Results: Participants with AD have important demographic differences compared with older non-AD participants such as low education level and retirement. Clinically, these patients reported more medical appointments, falls, and higher frequency and duration of hospitalizations compared with non-AD participants. These characteristics may be related to worse physical and mental health observed in this population. Indeed, two out of five older adults with AD in Brazil reported always feeling lonely, while two out of three said they felt depressed or sad much of the time. Adjusted analyses showed that patients with AD were 95% (95%CI 1.08 – 3.50) more likely to be hospitalized in a year compared with non-AD older adults. People with AD in Brazil were more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes (PR = 1.83 [95%CI 1.08 – 3.12]), depression (PR = 3.07% [95%CI 1.63 – 5.79]), Parkinson's disease (PR = 17.63 [95%CI 6.99 – 44.51]), and stroke (PR = 3.55 [95%CI 1.90 – 6.67]) compared with non-AD participants. Conclusion: Older adults with AD in Brazil reported impaired physical and mental health compared with the non-AD population.

The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact in several areas, and in scientific research was not different. Researchers are working from their homes since research facilities and universities were closed, and face-to-face interaction where limited to stop the virus spread. This brought a lot of changes in observational studies, especially in epidemiology research. Since most studies are being conducted through internet-based assessments, researchers are facing different challenges regarding data collection and participants recruitment, for example. In this paper, we share some of the challenges faced in a population-based study conducted in Southern Brazil, as well as possible alternatives to help researchers to overcome these issues.

Background: This scoping review aimed to identify the available evidence related to physical activity (PA) and the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: A search in 6 databases (PubMed, Embase, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL) was conducted on July 23, 2020. Medical subject headings and keywords related to PA and COVID-19 were combined to conduct the online search, which covered the period from January to July 2020.Results: Overall, 1784 articles were retrieved. After duplicate removal and title, abstract, and full-text screening, 41 articles were included. Most of the included studies were quantitative and collected data through online interviews/questionnaires, with sample sizes larger than 100 and composed by adults and older adults. Changes in PA levels due to the COVID-19 pandemic were the most assessed outcome, followed by the association between mental health issues and PA. Only 2 studies assessed the direct effects of PA on COVID-19.Conclusion: Most of the evidence identified a decrease in PA levels due to social distancing measures and that PA might help to decrease the mental health burden related to the COVID-19 outbreak.

We aim to share our experience of participants recruitment for the Prospective Study about Mental and Physical Health (PAMPA) cohort study using social media. The recruitment strategies were based mainly on social media. The inclusion criteria were being 18 years old or more and resident of Rio Grande do Sul state. In the survey’s official Facebook® and Instagram® page some strategies were adopted, such as weekly posting schedule, use of hashtags, organic publications, and boosted publications. Over the first 13 days of study, 1773 people were reached by an organic engagement. Boosted campaigns increased the average interactions reaching a total of 34,376 people, leading to 857 clicks on the survey’s link. Social media is a useful tool for participants recruitment strategy in epidemiological researches. However, internet-based approaches aiming to reach a more heterogeneous sample should be developed.

Limited evidence exists about non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) interventions among tactical personnel (police officers, firefighters, or army forces). The aim was to identify and systematically review the findings of randomized control trials (RCTs) investigating conservative interventions for the treatment NSLBP in tactical personnel. A search of seven databases for randomized controlled trials RCTs were conducted. Two independent reviewers extracted data and assessed the risk of bias (PEDro scale). Five RCTs (n = 387 military subjects; median PEDro score = 7/10) were included. The trials were highly heterogeneous, differing in pain and disability outcome measures, duration of NSLBP symptoms (acute, nonacute, nonchronic, and chronic), types of intervention (exercise, manual therapy, and physical therapy), types of control groups, and intervention durations (4–12 weeks). Two studies reported that strengthening exercise interventions were not effective for reducing pain or disability in military personnel with chronic or nonacute NSLBP. Manual therapy treatment was more effective than usual activities in current pain and pain typical symptoms in soldiers with acute NSLBP after four weeks. A multidimensional intervention reduced disability in military personnel with non-chronic NSLBP after four weeks. Strong evidence does not exist for the efficacy of any conservative interventions in the reduction of pain and disability in tactical populations with NSLBP.

This study aims to investigate the effects of physical activity before, during, and after social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic on low back pain (LBP), mental health and healthcare access. The PAMPA Cohort (Prospective Study About Mental and Physical Health) is a state-level ambispective longitudinal observational study that will be conducted in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. An online-based questionnaire will be used to assess LBP, mental health, healthcare access and physical activity at four time points: 1) pre-COVID-19 social distancing, 2) during COVID-19 social distancing, 3) 6 months and 4) 12 months after baseline. A proportional sample size calculation was conducted, and the final sample size was estimated in 1,767 people, distributed in seven state regions. Participants will be recruited by a four-arm approach: contact with universities, social media, local media and personal contacts. Descriptive analyzes will be reported as mean or proportion and respective 95% confidence interval (CI), when appropriate. Comparison between pre- and during COVID-19 social distancing, and after baseline assessments will be performed using two-way ANOVA with repeated measures. Proportions will be compared by Chi-squared test.

Investigate if low frequency sports practice has beneficial effects on bone mineral density (BMD) in adolescent females. This cross-sectional study recruited girls between 13 and 17 years old from two schools in Brazil. Participants in the control group could not be involved in any regular physical activity in the preceding six months, except for regular physical education (PE) classes. Participants in the sports activity group (SA) were recruited from the volleyball, basketball and handball teams of the selected schools, and were engaged in exercise training twice a week (3.1 ± 0.2 hours/week), and should be involved in sports activity for the past six months. Bone mineral density was assessed by Dual Emission X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) using pediatrics software. Control (n = 25) and SA (n = 27) groups were similar regarding age, anthropometry and calcium intake. BMD was 5.3% to 9.1% higher in girls from SA in comparison to control group in upper limbs, lower limbs, trochanteric region, total body and the total body without head. There was no BMD difference between groups for hip and lumbar spine. Engagement in low frequency and volume sport practice, may provide beneficial effects for bone health among adolescent females.

To identify and evaluate the effect of interventions that used cell phones as a means to promote physical activity (PA). The databases searched were MedLine/PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, PsycINFO, Science Direct, Lilacs, and SciELO. After removing duplicates, applying exclusion criteria, and checking the reference lists, 45 studies were reviewed. The Downs and Black (D&B) scale measured methodological quality, and a random effect model was used to compute the meta-analysis of PA by the reported unit (minutes per day or steps per day), delivery agent (application (APP), SMS, or other), and PA measurement (questionnaire, accelerometer, pedometer). Mobile phone-based PA interventions were efficient in increasing both minutes [10.49; CI (3.37–17.60); p = 0.004] and steps per day [735.17; CI (227.72–1242.61); p = 0.005] in adults when compared to baseline. Furthermore, APP-based interventions were able to increase the number of steps (p = 0.04) and minutes per day of PA (p = 0.04) in adults. Also, 85% of included manuscripts were classified as moderate- to high-quality articles. Mobile phone-based PA interventions, inclusive those delivery by APP, were effective to increase minutes and steps per day in adults.

Low back pain is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal conditions and the highest contributor to disability in the world. It is characterized by frequent relapses leading to additional care-seeking. Engagement in leisure physical activity is associated with lower recurrences and better prognosis and potentially reduced care-seeking. Our aim was to investigate the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a patient-centred physical activity intervention, supported by health coaching and mobile health, to reduce care-seeking, pain and disability in patients with chronic low back pain after treatment discharge. We conducted a pilot randomised controlled trial with blinded outcome assessment. Sixty-eight participants were recruited from four public outpatient physiotherapy departments and the general community in Sydney. The intervention group received a physical activity information booklet, plus one face-to-face and 12 telephone-based health coaching sessions. The intervention was supported by an internet-based application and an activity tracker (Fitbit). Control group (standard care) received the physical activity information booklet and advice to stay active. Feasibility measures included recruitment rate, intervention compliance, data completeness, and participant satisfaction. Primary outcomes were care-seeking, pain levels and activity limitation. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, 6-month follow-up and weekly for 6 months. Ninety potential participants were invited over 15 months, with 68 agreeing to take part (75%). Overall, 903 weekly questionnaires were answered by participants from a total of 1107 sent (89%). Participants were largely satisfied with the intervention (mean = 8.7 out of 10 on satisfaction scale). Intervention group participants had a 38% reduced rate of care-seeking (Incidence Rate Ratio (IRR): 0.62, 95% CI: 0.32 to 1.18, p = 0.14, using multilevel mixed-effects Poisson regression analysis) compared to standard care, although none of the estimates was statistically significant. No between groups differences were found for pain levels or activity limitation. The health coaching physical activity approach trialed here is feasible and well accepted by participants and may reduce care-seeking in patients with low back pain after treatment discharge, although further evaluation with an adequately powered trial is needed.

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/1980-0037.2017v19n2p185 Fitness zones (FZ) are a great alternative to physical activity practice. The aim of this study was verify physical activity practice and associated factors among FZ users of Pelotas. Participants answered a questionnaire containing demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral, health and on the use of FZs. A long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to determine the level of physical activity and those who reported at least 150 minutes / week of PA in the leisure time were considered sufficiently active. The study included 323 subjects (65.3% women), mean age 52.5 years, 83.6% white skin color and 61.9% married. Almost half of respondents were overweight (48.0%), 45.8% had high blood pressure, 10.5% had diabetes and 64.4% used medications. About 77.7% of respondents were classified as sufficiently active. Health perception was associated to leisure physical activity, and the better the health perception, the higher the prevalence of sufficient physical activity. Collective programs with participation of Physical Education teacher can contribute to interaction of practitione with the use of fitness zones and increase the level of physical activity of individuals.

Introduction: Palletofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is anterior knee pain that affects around 25% of the population at some point in their lives. Muscle weakness is one of the main causal factors related to PFPS. Objective: Conduct a quantitative analysis on the effectiveness of strength training at reducing pain in PFPS sufferers. Methods: An electronic search was conducted on the MEDLINE, Pubmed, EMBASE, Lilacs and Scielo databases for studies published between January 2005 and September 2014. The following descriptors were used: “patellofemoral pain syndrome”, “patellofemoral pain”, “retropatellar pain”, “exercise”, “exercise therapy”, “strength”, “rehabilitation”. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared the effects of strength training to no exercise in terms of reducing pain among PFPS sufferers were included. Data were extracted by two independent authors using predefined quality indicators. Results: A total of 39 RCTs were initially identified in the search. However, only five met the inclusion criteria. Strength training exhibited a positive effect on PFPS (SMD = 0.85, CI: 0.45-1.25). However, high heterogeneity was observed between the studies (p < 0.05; I 2 = 68.3%). Conclusion: Strength training showed a statistically positive response in the treatment of PFPS.
