Reading, writing, and orality receive more attention in basic education, but it is minimized in higher education, even though they can play an important role in academic and personal learning during professional training. Therefore, the objective of this essay is to reflect on these competences at higher education. To achieve this objective, available literature related to the topic was reviewed, derived from an intentional search. It was found that university students - due to a deficit in reading, writing and orality – they have poor cognitive processes, as well as a lack of motivation when undertaking academic reading, which may be due to insufficient specific criteria to evaluate these competencies, as well as few places inside educational institutions to promote/enjoy reading. All the above being directly linked to a deficit in effective communication, even beyond academics. From this essay the following reflection arises, even though there is research aimed at the study of these competencies at the higher level, greater attention and depth is needed in their evaluation, but, to a greater extent in their intervention, due to the advantages that it can also represent in this level for the teacher-student binomial.
