Dr. Chrysantus Mbi Tanga is a Senior Scientist and the Head of the Insects for Food, Feed and Others Uses Programme (INSEFF) at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe). Dr. Tanga holds a PhD in Agricultural Entomology from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He has over 15 years of wide-ranging experience in the up-scaling and dissemination of innovative technologies in insects for food and feed in Africa and beyond. He is extensively involved in strengthening global partnerships across ~200 organizations in 65 countries from 6 continents and in resource mobilization. His research interests include circular economy of insects as food and feed, One Health, organic waste bioconversion, insect frass fertilizer, value-addition of insect-based products, youth and women empowerment, policy development, food security, and poverty alleviation. His work has actively been translated into multidisciplinary cross-cutting edge research with over 150 published articles and several book chapters, and he is extremely keen on building capacity in edible insect research and its applications. This nascent programme won the 2020 Curt Bergfors Foundation Food Planet Prize. A recent (2023) survey published by Stanford University listed Dr. Tanga among the world’s top 2% Scientists whose published research papers have accelerated progress in their fields and has influenced the productivity of other researchers. Dr Tanga has mentored several PhD and MSc students.
