Biography

Prof. Michael Levin, Distinguished Professor in the Biology Department and Vannevar Bush Chair, serves as Director of the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts. He attended Tufts University, where he received dual B.S. degrees in computer science and biology. He earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University for the first characterization of the molecular–genetic mechanisms that allow embryos to consistently form left–right asymmetric body structures; this work is on Nature's list of '100 Milestones of Developmental Biology of the Century'. His lab uses a combination of developmental biophysics, computer science, and cognitive science approaches to understand diverse intelligence in unconventional guises, such as cells operating in anatomical morphospace during development and regeneration. They transition these basic advances into novel approaches for birth defects, repair of traumatic injuries, cancer reprogramming, and synthetic bioengineering.
