It is widely recognized that the adoption of collaborative organization models in the agri-food sector can help farmers in rural areas to reach sustainable development goals. In any case, a holistic and coherent view of sustainability, organizational models and supporting technologies in the agri-food sector is still not present in the scientific literature. With this paper, we aim to fill this gap and to propose a framework that is useful to help scholars and practitioners in analyzing and designing sustainable Collaborative Networks in the agri-food sector

Scholars from different perspectives agree that agritourism can be the right tool to balance the needs of tourists with those of rural communities, offering real opportunities for economic and social development, while mitigating undesirable impacts on the environment. This paper aims to provide a holistic outlook of the different perspectives under which scientific literature deals with the topic of agritourism as a means to support the sustainable development of rural areas. To reach this aim, we performed a systematic review of the scientific literature in order to point out the linkages between agritourism and sustainability. We analyzed papers through a text mining solution based on the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) technique to point out the main topics around which the scientific literature on agritourism and sustainability has grown. Topics are further categorized in themes by means of an agglomerative hierarchical clustering procedure. Results are further analyzed to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the current streams of the literature.

The ongoing pandemic COVID-19 is soliciting the question: what do we know about the knowledge management in a pandemic? Knowledge is a strategic resource to drive decisionmakers in the management of a pandemic, to mitigate health and socio-economic effects. Unlike other natural disasters, pandemics have a long lead time, and during this time can be actively managed. Decisions taken in such a complex process can change the course and the effects of a pandemic. Despite the critical role of knowledge management in pandemics, that inform and enable decision-makers, the literature on this specific issue is poor, fragmented, mainly addressed by “health” journals and marginally addressed by the “knowledge management” scholars. This paper aims to provide the ground for filling this gap, by detecting the state-of-art, that is the topics and the past studies, about Knowledge Management in pandemics.

Purpose Most recent developments in the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies can boost the efficacy of business process management (BPM) to improve process performance. The purpose of this paper is to describe a method for redesigning bank branch (BB) protection systems contributing to make BBs “smarter.” Design/methodology/approach Based upon a multiple case study approach, the paper deployed a four-step business process reengineering design from an information system development perspective. To overcome limitations of information scarcity required for modeling activities, a multimethod approach to data gathering and results validation was adopted. The approach was based on a comprehensive literature review and an in-depth qualitative survey involving a sample of six security managers of primary Italian banking groups. Findings The intelligent protection system resulting from the application of the methodology to the Italian BB sector was able to improve the security management process. Lead time and actors’ workload were reduced; running costs decreased; quality of information improved as well as the overall effectiveness of the protection system against criminal attacks. Originality/value The specific IoT technologies proposed are new. Additionally, to date, their application to BB security management has not been analyzed in the BPM literature. The value resides in the highly applicable results of the methodology to the BB network of a banking group both inside and outside of Italy.

Purpose Strong agreement in the extant business literature emphasizes that digital developments are key to economic growth internationally. This is in spite of the recorded high levels (up to 50 percent) of failure among digital companies and entrepreneurs. The purpose of this paper is to identify the digital debates in Italy, explore current policies and develop a typology that characterizes digital entrepreneurs (DEs) and their start-up companies in Italy. Design/methodology/approach The digital debates and policies are explored through an extensive telephone survey of the self-perceptions and identified supports required by 348 Italian active DEs. Quantitative statistical techniques were used including factor analysis, cluster analysis and ANOVA, to identify motivations, profiles and critical success factors relevant to the sample. Findings The study identifies three main clusters among the DEs: emerging very young; emerging business focused and experienced. These clusters vary with the entrepreneurs’ background and competence base, motivation and satisfaction factors. The different kinds of profiles require specific kinds of supporting policies identified by the sample that focus on financial, educational and/or networking provision. Originality/value The paper affirms the central role of digital entities in modern economies expressed in the current literature and increases knowledge of the perceived success factors identified by DEs. The identification and classification of self-reported characteristics of Italian DEs and to what extent these characterizations might be useful for tailored interventions to support their success are the main contributions of this study. Accordingly, an authentic, original and self-reported portrayal has been constructed of the self-perceptions of Italian DEs. Finally, the study explores the implications for actions and new policies considering self-perceived profiles, needs and expectations of DEs.

Purpose The paper examines the conditions under which the adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) innovation is justified by business purposes. The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology capable of guiding prudent and successful investment in the IoT. The paper identifies enabling conditions to maximize the success of IoT security innovation adoption projects in Italian banks. Design/methodology/approach The methodology proposed is constructed from two key sources: first a literature review and second through impressions gleaned from an informal survey and in-depth interviews with a sample of convenience of six managers of Italian bank security systems. A key purpose of the literature review is to identify enabling conditions for a successful IT innovation adoption project which is then synthesized into an “innovation adoption model” capable of illustrating an IoT adoption decision. Second, the authors identify business process reengineering (BPR) steps required to establishing an appropriate organizational and technical framework to successfully undertake the adoption of the IoT for bank physical security purposes. The resulting methodology refers to a typical BPR project approached from an information system development perspective capable of fusing IoT services with human-based services at best performance values. Findings The literature review and proposed BPR framework give indications of possible support for the conclusion that the banking sector is ready for the IoT innovations and transformation of traditional bank branch worksites into smart environments. The tentative nature of these findings give sufficient justification for trialing the IoT for banking physical security by introducing an Intelligent Protection System to manage security management processes. Although the authors do not generalize the findings from examining the Italian banking security system, the literature review and the paucity of studies available encourages us to investigate the use of the IoT for bank physical security more broadly. Originality/value Adoption of the IoT represents the third wave of IT-driven competition and introduces a methodology applicable to the security domain which represents, globally, an area that is becoming a domain of major economic and social concern. The IoT adoption model proposed reflects the current state of knowledge in the field and could be extended to other organizational at-risk areas requiring continuity of highly effective protection. The authors are encouraged by the results that indicate a high likelihood of success to trial an IoT introduction to banking security.

Scholars and practitioners of knowledge management have paid increasing attention to the adoption of social media in business-to-business (B2B) setting for knowledge sharing; however, both the theoretical and empirical research in this domain are quite fragmented. The aim of this research is to deepen the understanding about the B2B companies’ awareness of the potentials of social media in improving their absorptive capacity and, consequently, if and how such companies deploy knowledge strategies based on social media adoption. We carried out an empirical survey of Finnish technology companies operating purely in B2B markets. Results highlight that social media adoption is still in a preliminary stage of development. Companies show a lack of awareness of the potentials of social media as a means for external knowledge acquisition and internal dissemination. Results suggest a strong need of a structured approach to the adoption of social media to overcome cultural and organisational barriers.

Protection of Bank Branches (BBs) represents an interesting setting where potential benefits deriving from the introduction of IoT technologies can give best results in terms of operational performances. In this paper we present main results of an ERFD funded project aimed to redesign BBs as smart environments. First, we summarize main results of a multiple case study among Italian banking groups aimed to characterize the problem. Second, we propose main characteristics of a cyber-physical-social space (CPSS) specifically designed to facilitate the rise of a smart BB. Third, we introduce the architecture of a cognitive protection system designed to manage a network of BB CPSSs belonging to a banking group in order to improve both the degree of security and safety inside the branch environment, and the operational performances of security management processes.

Recent developments of ICTs enable new ways to experience tourism and conducted to the concept of smart tourism. The adoption of cutting-edge technologies and its combination with innovative organizational models fosters cooperation, knowledge sharing, and open innovation among service providers in tourism destination. Moreover, it offers innovative services to visitors. In few words, they become smart tourism destinations. In this paper, we report first results of the SMARTCAL project aimed at conceiving a digital platform assisting Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) in providing smart tourism services. A DMO is the organization charged with managing the tourism offer of a collaborative network, made up of service providers acting in a destination. In this paper, we adopted a multiple case studies approach to analyze five Italian DMOs. Our aims were to investigate (1) if, and how, successful DMOs were able to offer smart tourism services to visitors; (2) if the ICTs adoption level was related to the collaboration level among DMO partners. First results highlighted that use of smart technologies was still in an embryonic stage of development, and it did not depend from collaboration levels.

Food information is a crucial tool for facilitating consumers in decision-making activities related to their consumption process. Recent advances in “Internet of food” technologies (such as food sensors, cloud computing, food data analysis, and mobile app technologies) makes possible to conceive new consumer information platforms. The rationale is to empower consumers by letting them get more relevant food information than they usually obtain through on-product labeling, mass media or other traditional channels. In this paper, we envisage a new generation of food information provision services, called intelligent food services (IFSs), which would be responsive to consumer’s expectations and information needs. We outline IFS structure and main features as well as constitutive elements of user-IFS interaction context. Particularly, we focus on food-in-context awareness capability and we discuss its influence on consumer and IFS behaviors.

The topic of sustainable growth is becoming central in the debate over the rural development policies. Rural communities can completely fulfil the new challenges in the area of sustainability only with the implementation of innovative forms of collaborations among their business networks. In this work, we consider a particular form of business collaboration arising within rural communities, namely Agritourism Rural Network (ARN). In an ARN, a farm, providing agritourism activities, represents a touchpoint between a network of business and organizations in a rural area and tourists interested in enjoying the local territory. With the aim to deeper the extend of the agritourism phenomenon in a rural region and the potential of the related ARNs in being means of sustainable development, we report main results of an empirical survey carried out in 2016 on a sample of 105 agritourism farms all belonging to the same region (Calabria, Italy). Results confirm our intuitions about the importance at farm level of setting agritourism activities and their impact for the ARN related to the farm and for the sustainable development of a local community as a whole.

In the increasingly saturated tourism market, an effective tourism destination management is essential to support competitive and sustainable growth. The topic becomes interesting in light of the spread of the collaborative network (CN) organisational models and the massive diffusion of web 2.0 and mobile technology. The formers have proven to give concrete opportunities of development in many industrial sectors, the latter has been changing the way tourists experience a destination. Even if several case studies of CNs in tourism are known, a comprehensive study of how tourism destinations can benefit of CN models and enabling technologies is not present; especially in the effort to help tourism destinations in setting up services able to actively support each phase of the tourist 2.0 lifecycle. In this paper we highlight how CN models are able to support the tourism destination management in order to gain competitiveness for local areas, to improve flexibility in services provision and to give tourists the possibility to live an augmented tourism experience. Furthermore, a review of the most suitable forms of collaborative network for tourism destination and their ways to actively support the augmented experience of the tourist 2.0 are proposed.

A resource-efficient Europe is a pillar of the EU 2020 program which aims at smart, sustainable, inclusive growth. The diffusion of smart networked environments, wherein humans, intelligent agents and devices collaborate, is fundamental for achieving energy-efficiency in buildings. In this context, this paper deals with the topic of Smart Home Environments (SHEs), where users can exploit multimedia services to interact with heterogeneous and interconnected smart appliances in order to save energy, reduce costs and improve users’ comfort and safety. In particular, we propose an interoperable architectural framework and a related knowledge-based management model, associated with a specific forecasting model, for monitoring and managing energy consumption in SHEs.

Collaboration is a key factor of sustainable growth across territories and industrial sectors. Tourism, one of the largest industries in the world, has been subject to strongest innovation in the last years. Main reasons of this reside both in the availability of new ICTs - Information and Communication Technologies - and organizational models, which directly connect tourists among them and with service providers, and in the always more personalized supply of tourism experience. Tourism destinations can benefit of such innovations if they are able to reorganize the territorial tourism offer around different pattern of collaboration in order to give 2.0 tourists opportunities to live an augmented tourism experience. This paper deals with the possible forms of collaborative networks that can rise within a destination with a focus on relationships between services delivered by the Tourism Destination and the requests of services at the different phases of the tourist 2.0 lifecycle.

This chapter describes, analyses, and critically explores intellectual styles of individuals living in different parts of the world. It is organized into two main sections. The first is devoted to exploring the nature of intellectual styles, as defined in the theory of reality construction (Sofo 2005); the second examines the development of critical thinking skills in a sample of university students. In both sections, the focus is on university students who represent the next generation of professionals, in all probability, the ones who will be making important decisions in the next 20 years. We think it is important to recognize differences and similarities among students to better understand their preferred ways of processing information and dealing with complex tasks. In the first section, we try to deepen our understanding how students make decisions analyzing their preferred ways of thinking about solving problems and behaving. With this aim, the first part of this section reports on explorative surveys conducted in three European regions: Northern Italy, Southern Italy, and Western Finland. The results characterize intellectual styles and verify how differences in socio-economic and cultural factors status are decisive in the conditioning intellectual style. Classical research in this area is based on the understanding of the individual intellectual style; we try to take a step forward investigating how differences in intellectual styles can influence collaboration among individuals in structured creative environments. We introduce an innovative research methodology where a sample of university students was surveyed while subjected to an intensive project-based learning (PBL) experience. Next, we conclude by reporting on a qualitative contrastive analysis among the decision makers of tomorrow (samples of university students from three European regions) and today’s leaders (samples of Chinese and Australian managers) discovering some unexpected results. Overall, the perspective of the first section is to better understand ways of thinking of our current students and the importance of raising awareness of how to maximize the effectiveness of their preferred ways of thinking to thrive in the ever complex and dynamic environments of the future. The key concepts covered in the first section include intellectual/thinking style, management, organizational learning, collaborative networks, and collaborative work. In the second section, we define, explore, and analyze the role of critical thinking, its relevance in different contexts, and its characteristics to be a fundamental part of creativity and leadership. Critical thinking is here viewed—among other things—as an individual’s ability to maximize their capacity to create improvements. The section introduces the Critical Thinking Capability Inventory (CTCI) and a study of its reliability, by means of a Cronbach alpha analysis to test internal consistency. Furthermore, a study finalized to test differences in critical thinking skills, between Australian and Italian students, is reported. The study survey sample of students was from four Italian universities and a sample from the University of Canberra (Australia). Overall, this section endeavors to deepen our understanding of the key constructs of critical thinking, creativity, leadership, innovation, and university students.

The aim of this second chapter is to present a review of literature on critical thinking and on intellectual styles in order to point out the potential intersections between critical thinking and intellect. These pages are directed toward an integration of intellectual ability, learning style, personality and achievement motivation as predictors of the decision-making process. We point out the main factors affecting decision processes in the current complex scenario recalling some concepts illustrated in “Decision Making in the Social Sciences”. Far from the normative approach, we present insights on the adaptive nature of the decision-making process in our complex society: people adapt according the age, the experience, the contexts, and the role we play.

In this book, we have focused on decision making and intellectual style from four key social science perspectives where there are distinct differences but also overlapping concerns: sociology, management, marketing, and education. These disciplines are hybrids and naturally our discussion has been drawn into other scientific disciplines such as psychology. Our focus on the four disciplines is because they are applied fields that use an accumulation of wisdom continually being advanced. In this chapter, we draw together some of the threads presented in earlier chapters and attempt a further synthesis of adaptive decision making and intellectual style. We review the contribution of these social science areas to the twin notions of decision making and intellectual style. In what follows, we first highlight and extend several aspects already discussed in the first three chapters. Second, we examine the role of decision biases and decision frameworks. Third, we survey the relevance of some recent literature on intuition and its role in decision making. Fourth, we revisit decision making and the importance of intellectual style within the new world and coin the term Adaptive Decision Making 3.0 to mean new and interactive approaches to decision making that incorporate awareness raising of intellectual style usage including deep professional learning at different levels (for example resilience, double-, and triple-loop learning) to heighten our recognition and more effective utilization of decision biases and decision frameworks as well as intuition. The chapter concludes with two case studies on ADM 3.0, one on UNESCO and the other on QF12.
