The advent of digitization has brought about new technologies that enable advanced condition monitoring and fault diagnosis under the Industry 4.0 paradigm. While vibration signal analysis is a commonly used method for fault detection in literature, it often involves the use of expensive equipment in difficult-to-reach locations. This paper presents a solution for fault diagnosis of electrical machines by utilizing machine learning techniques on the edge, classifying information coming from motor current signature analysis (MCSA) for broken rotor bar detection. The paper covers the process of feature extraction, classification, and model training and testing for three different machine learning methods using a public dataset to then export the results to diagnose a different machine. An edge computing approach is adopted for the data acquisition, signal processing and model implementation on an affordable platform, the Arduino. This makes it accessible for small and medium-sized companies, albeit with the limitations of a resource-constrained platform. The proposed solution has been tested on electrical machines in the Mining and Industrial Engineering School of Almadén (UCLM) with positive results.

This paper introduces a proposal for a smart grid management platform built on the distributed programming paradigm. Besides it is based on an information model and event architecture. The information model defines a set of clear interfaces to manage every "grid node". We built an actual implementation of a low-cost embeddable control/meter device that may even be attached to individual appliances. These devices behave as conventional autonomous remote distributed objects and provide full support for the information model and also for integration with the communication middleware. The resulting event architecture provides great flexibility to manage information flows from services and applications.

For decades, software middlewares have tackled with the heterogeneity and interconnectivity problems in computer networks with success. These problems are recurrent in the design of complex systems-on chip with a large number of components of different nature (including SW and HW modules). In this paper we present an object- oriented communication engine (OOCE) based on the architectural concepts used in software middlewares that unifies the inter-communication interface for both HW and SW elements. The infrastructure provided by the OOCE introduces a low-overhead abstraction layer that can be easily used to implement several parallel programming models. An implementation of this approach has been made for the Xilinx-V2Pro platform.
