The Karst region is a critical ecological barrier and functional zone in China. Understanding the spatiotemporal evolution of its ecosystem services and its relationship with human activities and climate change is of importance for achieving regional ecological protection and high-quality development. In this study, we used the InVEST model and CASA model to evaluate the spatiotemporal evolution pattern of ecosystem services in the study area from 2000 to 2020. The XGBoost–SHAP model was used to reveal the key indicators and thresholds of changes in major ecosystem services in the study area due to climate change and human activities. The results showed significant land use changes in the study area from 2000 to 2020, particularly the conversion of cropland to construction land, which was more intense in economically developed areas. The areas of forest and grassland increased initially but later decreased due to the impact of human activities and natural factors. Habitat quality (HQ) showed an overall declining trend, while soil retention (SR) and water yield (WY) services exhibited significant interannual variations due to climate change. The changes in rainfall had a particularly notable impact on these services; in years with excessive rainfall, soil erosion intensified, leading to a decline in SR services, whereas in years with moderate rainfall, SR and WY services improved. Carbon fixation (CF) services were enhanced with the expansion of forest areas. The XGBoost–SHAP model further revealed that the effects of rainfall and sunshine duration on ecosystem services were nonlinear, while population density and the proportion of construction land had a significant negative impact on habitat quality and soil retention. The expansion of construction land had the most significant negative impact on habitat quality, whereas the increase in forest land significantly improved carbon fixation and the soil retention capacity. By revealing the mechanisms of the impact of climate change and human activities on ecosystem services, we aimed to provide support for the promotion of ecological conservation and sustainable development strategies in the study area, as well as to provide an important reference for areas with geographic similarities to the study area.

The scientific identification of key areas for regional ecological protection represents an important basis for maintaining regional ecological stability and enhancing regional development. It is also a developing methodology of landscape ecology (LE) research. The strategic ecological protection and integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region is of critical significance for promoting the construction of ecological civilization in the watershed and improving societal health. Here, we analyze Anhui Province and select important ecosystem service functions (biodiversity, carbon fixation, soil conservation function, and water retention) in the study area. We construct a spatial pattern of ecosystem services for multiple scenarios based on the multi-criteria decision-making method ordered weighted averaging (OWA), calculate the trade-off degree and conservation efficiency of each scenario, identify ecological priority conservation areas, use circuit theory to explore ecological corridors and key areas and to construct regional ecological corridors, and identify regional pinch points and barrier points which may impede the construction of regional ecological security patterns. The study area is divided into an ecological protection zone, ecological buffer zone, ecological transition zone, ecological optimization zone, and ecological governance zone. Our results show that: (1) the four types of ecosystems in the study area have similar spatial distribution patterns, with an overall spatial characteristic of “high in the southwest and low in the northeast”; (2) the four types of ecosystem services in the study area show synergistic relationships at the provincial scale, but in areas with different natural and geographical characteristics, there are both synergistic and trade-off relationships between different ecosystem services; (3) a total of 121 ecological source sites were identified in the study area based on multi-criteria decision making which cover an area of 43,222.26 km2, accounting for 30.87% of the total area of the study area; and (4) a total of 250 ecological corridors, 54 pinch points, and 24 barrier points were identified in the study area based on circuit theory. Our results may provide decision support for ecological restoration and land use structure optimization in Anhui Province and other regions.

The survival and sustainability of regional species is constrained by habitat quality. In recent decades, the intensification of human activities on a global scale has had a profound impact on regional ecosystems and poses a serious threat to regional sustainable development. Scientific measurement of the drivers of habitat quality can provide important support for the development of effective biodiversity conservation and sustainable land-use policies. Taking the Hung River Valley as an example, the InVEST model was used to assess the habitat quality of the study area in 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020 and to explore its spatial and temporal variation and distribution characteristics in combination with the spatial autocorrelation model, and the geographically weighted regression (GWR) model was used to explore the drivers of habitat quality change. The results show the following: (1) The overall habitat quality shows an increasing trend during 2000–2020, but the expansion of construction land in the central region plays a dominant role in the degradation of regional habitat quality. (2) The “Guide-Ledu” line is the dividing line of habitat quality in the Hung River Valley, with a general distribution of “south is good, north is bad” and “south is hot, north is cold”. (3) Natural factors such as slope and elevation basically shape the overall distribution pattern of habitat quality, while urbanisation factors such as population density, gross domestic product, and the night-time lighting index are generally negatively correlated with habitat quality. The results of the study can reveal the linkage between ecosystems and land-use change in the context of urbanisation.

The quantitative and spatial–temporal variations in the characteristics of ecosystem value can be helpful to improve environmental protection and climate adaptation measures and adjust the balance between economic development and the ecological environment. The arid and semi-arid regions of China are undergoing the effects of climate change across the entire northern hemisphere. Their ecological environments are fragile and in conflict with anthropogenic activities, which significantly altered more ecosystems services in these regions. Therefore, estimating the effects of anthropogenic activities on ecosystem services is important for formulating ecological policy and regional environmental mitigation plans of these regions. This study employed the model of ecosystem service value (ESV) assessment and the bivariate spatial autocorrelation method to reveal the spatiotemporal variations in the characteristics of ecosystem value in the arid and semi-arid ecological regions of China and its interaction with human activities. Results showed that (1) the total value of ES of the study area increased from USD 487,807 billion in 2000 to USD 67,831,150 billion 2020; (2) the ES value provided by forest land first increased by 5.60% from 2000 to 2020; (3) the ESV provided by grassland showed an overall decline over the 20 years. Food and raw material production showed the lowest ES value, and climate regulation and soil conservation decreased from 2000 to 2020; (4) the index of human footprint patches decreased from 45.80% in 2000 to 17.63% in 2020, while the high and very high human footprint index areas increased significantly, mainly due to the rapid urbanization and improvement of railway networks in these areas. Spatially, the regions with high human footprint were mostly dispersed in the northeastern of China such as Shanxi and Gansu, whereas the regions with a low human footprint remained mainly located in the central and southwestern parts of China; (5) significant spatial dependencies between changes in ESV and the human footprint index were recorded. Our study could provide a scientific basis for ecosystem functions regulation and land development security in arid and semi-arid ecological regions.
