Raman distributed optical fiber sensing has been demonstrated to be a mature and versatile scheme that presents great flexibility and effectivity for the distributed temperature measurement of a wide range of engineering applications over other established techniques. The past decades have witnessed its rapid development and extensive applicability ranging from scientific researches to industrial manufacturing. However, there are four theoretical or technical bottlenecks in traditional Raman distributed optical fiber sensing: (i) The difference in the Raman optical attenuation, a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the system and the fixed error of the Raman demodulation equation restrict the temperature measurement accuracy of the system. {ii) The sensing distance and spatial resolution cannot be reconciled. (iii) There is a contradiction between the SNR and measurement time of the system. (iv) Raman distributed optical fiber sensing cannot perform dual-parameter detection. Based on the above theoretical and technical bottlenecks, advances in performance enhancements and typical applications of Raman distributed optical fiber sensing are reviewed in this paper. Integration of this optical system technology with knowledge based, that is, demodulation technology etc. can further the performance and accuracy of these systems.

In the past two decades Brillouin-based sensors have emerged as a newly-developed optical fiber sensing technology for distributed temperature and strain measurements. Among these, the Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer (BOTDR) has attracted more and more research attention, because of its exclusive advantages, including single-end access, simple system architecture, easy implementation and widespread field applications. It is realized mainly by injecting optical pulses into the fiber and detecting the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS), which is linearly related to the change of ambient temperature and axial strain of the sensing fiber. In this paper, the authors provide a review of new progress on performance improvement and applications of BOTDR in the last decade. Firstly, the recent advances in improving the performance of BOTDRs are summarized, such as spatial resolution, signal-to-noise ratio and measurement accuracy, measurement speed, cross sensitivity and other properties. Moreover, novel-type optical fibers bring new characteristics to optic fiber sensors, hence we introduce the different Brillouin sensing features of special fibers, mainly covering the plastic optical fiber, photonic crystal fiber, few-mode fiber and other special fibers. Additionally, we present a brief overview of BOTDR application scenarios in many industrial fields and intelligent perception, including structural health monitoring of large-range infrastructure, geological disaster prewarning and other applications. To conclude, we discuss several challenges and prospects in the future development of BOTDRs.

The physics principle of pulse flight positioning is the main theoretical bottleneck that restricts the spatial resolution of the existing Raman distributed optical fiber sensing scheme. Owing to the pulse width of tens of nanoseconds, the spatial resolution of the existing Raman distributed optical fiber sensing scheme with kilometer-level sensing distance is limited to the meter level, which seriously restricts the development of the optical time-domain reflection system. In this paper, a chaos laser is proposed in the context of the physical principle of the Raman scattering effect, and a novel theory of chaos Raman distributed optical fiber sensing scheme is presented. The scheme reveals the characteristics of chaos Raman scattering light excited by a chaotic signal on the sensing fiber. Further, the chaos time-domain compression demodulation mechanism between the temperature variation information and chaos correlation peak is demonstrated. Then, the position of the temperature variation signal is precisely located using the delay time of the chaos correlation peak combined with the chaos pulse flight time. Based on this novel optical sensing mechanism, an experiment with 10 cm spatial resolution and 1.4 km sensing distance was conducted, and the spatial resolution was found to be independent of the sensing distance. Within the limit of the existing spatial resolution theory, the spatial resolution of the proposed scheme is 50 times higher than that of the traditional scheme. The scheme also provides a new research direction for optical chaos and optical fiber sensing.

In the application of the fire prevention, the sensor is expected to alarm before the occurrence of fire. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a long-range Raman distributed fiber temperature sensor (RDFTS) and a temperature early warning model (TEWM) for fire detection and prevention. The TWEM includes first-order and second-order moving average method. And the second-order moving average method is suitable for prediction based on trends with significant temperature changes. The RDFTS achieved a spatial resolution of 3.0 and 28.6 m for the sensing range of 1.38 and 28.9 km, respectively. In experiment, the sensing fiber is placed in the temperature-controlled chamber and outdoor building (Boxue Building, Taiyuan University of Technology, China) for detecting and predicting the temperature. The experimental results show that the TEWM can predict the temperature trend in advance of 46 s. Simultaneously, the mean absolute errors of prediction temperature are 0.33 °C (temperature-controlled chamber) and 0.31 °C (Boxue Building). The experimental results are in accordance with the China-National Standard System for fire detection and prevention.

We propose and experimental demonstrate a Dynamic Threshold Identification Method (DTIM) based on the Raman distributed fiber sensor (RDFS) system for detecting the pipeline leak. The DTIM can detect the position of pipeline leak according to distributed temperature measured by the RDFS. The DTIM includes three steps, which are the space segmentation detection, 3σ criterion and identification of historical data. The experimental results show that the proposed RDFS can detect and accurately locate the leak position by using the DTIM, and the positioning accuracy is 1 m. In addition, the temperature change rate of the leak position performs a quadratic function relationship with the leak rate, and the leak rate can be estimated by this method. It provides an effective distributed monitoring method for the leak monitoring of pipeline.

We propose and demonstrate a millimeter-level -spatial-resolution Brillouin optical correlation-domain analysis system based on a broadband chaotic laser, where the spatial resolution only depends on chaotic signal bandwidth. By adjusting the bandwidth of chaos, the single correlation peak has been compressed to be extremely narrow. The Brillouin gain spectrum was obtained by replacing a previous optical power meter with a lock-in amplifier. Thus, the signal-to-noise ratio improved and the data acquisition time reduced effectively. This experiment is the first in that the distributed tensile strain was observed via a chaotic Brillouin optical correlation-domain analysis system with a 3.5-mm spatial resolution over 165-m measurement range. The standard deviation in the reconstructed Brillouin frequency shift was ±2 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed system is a broadband-source optical sensing system with the highest reported spatial resolution.
