Currently, accurate information on crop area coverage is vital for food security and industry, and there is strong demand for timely crop mapping. In this study, we used MODIS time series data to investigate the effect of the time series length on crop mapping. Eight time series with different lengths (ranging from one month to eight months) were tested. For each time series, we first used the Random Forest (RF) algorithm to calculate the importance score for all features (including multi-spectral data, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), and phenological metrics). Subsequently, an extension of the Jeffries–Matusita (JM) distance was used to measure class separability for each time series. Finally, the RF algorithm was used to classify crop types, and the classification accuracy and certainty were used to analyze the influence of the time series length and the number of features on classification performance; the features were added one by one based on their importance scores. Results indicated that when the time series was longer than five months, the top ten features remained stable. These features were mainly in July and August. In addition, the NDVI features contributed the majority of the most significant features for crop mapping. The NDWI and data from multi-spectral bands also contributed to improving crop mapping. On the other hand, separability, classification accuracy, and certainty increased with the number of features used and the time series length, although these values quickly reached saturation. Five months was the optimal time series length, as longer time series provided no further improvement in the classification performance. This result shows that relatively short time series have the potential to identify crops accurately, which allows for early crop mapping over large areas.

Remote sensing images captured by satellites play a critical role in Earth observation (EO). With the advancement of satellite technology, the number and variety of remote sensing satellites have increased, which provide abundant data for precise environmental monitoring and effective resource management. However, existing satellite imagery often faces a trade-off between spatial and temporal resolutions. It is challenging for a single satellite to simultaneously capture images with high spatial and temporal resolutions. Consequently, spatiotemporal fusion techniques, which integrate images from different sensors, have garnered significant attention. Over the past decade, research on spatiotemporal fusion has achieved remarkable progress. Nevertheless, traditional fusion methods often encounter difficulties when dealing with complicated fusion scenarios. With the development of computer science, deep learning models, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), generative adversarial networks (GANs), Transformers, and diffusion models, have recently been introduced into the field of spatiotemporal fusion, resulting in efficient and accurate algorithms. These algorithms exhibit various strengths and limitations, which require further analysis and comparison. Therefore, this paper reviews the literature on deep learning-based spatiotemporal fusion methods, analyzes and compares existing deep learning-based fusion algorithms, summarizes current challenges in this field, and proposes possible directions for future studies.

Most methods used for crop classification rely on the ground-reference data of the same year, which leads to considerable financial and labor cost. In this study, we presented a method that can avoid the requirements of a large number of ground-reference data in the classification year. Firstly, we extracted the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series profiles of the dominant crops from MODIS data using the historical ground-reference data in multiple years (2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010). Artificial Antibody Network (ABNet) was then employed to build reference NDVI time series for each crop based on the historical NDVI profiles. Afterwards, images of Landsat and HJ were combined to obtain 30 m image time series with 15-day acquisition frequency in 2011. Next, the reference NDVI time series were transformed to Landsat/HJ NDVI time series using their linear model. Finally, the transformed reference NDVI profiles were used to identify the crop types in 2011 at 30 m spatial resolution. The result showed that the dominant crops could be identified with overall accuracy of 87.13% and 83.48% in Bole and Manas, respectively. In addition, the reference NDVI profiles generated from multiple years could achieve better classification accuracy than that from single year (such as only 2007). This is mainly because the reference knowledge from multiple years contains more growing conditions of the same crop. Generally, this approach showed potential to identify crops without using large number of ground-reference data at 30 m resolution.

This study examined changes in urban expansion and land surface temperature in Beijing between 1990 and 2014 using multitemporal TM, ETM+, and OLI images, and evaluated the relationship between percent impervious surface area (%ISA) and relative mean annual surface temperature (RMAST). From 1990 to 2001, both internal land transformation and outward expansion were observed. In the central urban area, the high-density urban areas decreased by almost 7 km2, while the moderate- and high-density urban land areas increased by 250 and 90 km2, respectively, outside of the third ring road. From 2001 to 2014, high-density urban areas between the fifth and sixth ring roads experienced the greatest increase by more than 210 km2, and RMAST generally increased with %ISA. During 1990–2001 and 2001–2014, RMAST increased by more than 1.5 K between the south third and fifth ring roads, and %ISA increased by more than 50% outside of the fifth ring road. These trends in urban expansion and RMAST over the last two decades in Beijing can provide useful information for urban planning decisions.

This paper presents a novel approach for semantic segmentation of building roofs in dense urban environments with a Deep Convolution Neural Network (DCNN) using Chinese Very High Resolution (VHR) satellite (i.e., GF2) imagery. To provide an operational end-to-end approach for accurately mapping build roofs with feature extraction and image segmentation, a fully convolutional DCNN with both convolutional and deconvolutional layers is designed to perform building roof segmentation. We selected typical cities with dense and diverse urban environments in different metropolitan regions of China as study areas, and sample images were collected over cities. High performance GPU-mounted workstations are employed to perform the model training and optimization. With the building roof samples collected over different cities, the predictive model with convolution layers is developed for building roof segmentation. The validation shows that the overall accuracy (OA) and the mean Intersection Over Union (mIOU) of DCNN-based semantic segmentation results are 94.67% and 0.85, respectively, and the CRF-refined segmentation results achieved OA of 94.69% and mIOU of 0.83. The results suggest that the proposed approach is a promising solution for building roof mapping with VHR images over large areas in dense urban environments with different building patterns. With the operational acquisition of GF2 VHR imagery, it is expected to develop an automated pipeline of operational built-up area monitoring, and the timely update of building roof map could be applied in urban management and assessment of human settlement-related sustainable development goals over large areas.
