The North China Plain (NCP) has been experiencing the most severe groundwater depletion in China, leading to a broad region of vertical motions of the Earth’s surface. This paper explores the seasonal and linear trend variations of surface vertical displacements caused by the groundwater changes in NCP from 2009 to 2013 using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) techniques. Results show that the peak-to-peak amplitude of GPS-derived annual variation is about 3.7~6.0 mm and is highly correlated (R > 0.6 for most selected GPS stations) with results from GRACE, which would confirm that the vertical displacements of continuous GPS (CGPS) stations are mainly caused by groundwater storage (GWS) changes in NCP, since GWS is the dominant component of total water storage (TWS) anomalies in this area. The linear trends of selected bedrock-located IGS CGPS stations reveal the distinct GWS changes in period of 2009–2010 (decrease) and 2011–2013 (rebound), which are consistent with results from GRACE-derived GWS anomalies and in situ GWS observations. This result implies that the rate of groundwater depletion in NCP has slowed in recent years. The impacts of geological condition (bedrock or sediment) of CGPS stations to their results are also investigated in this study. Contrasted with the slight linear rates (−0.69~1.5 mm/a) of bedrock-located CGPS stations, the linear rates of sediment-located CGPS stations are between −44 mm/a and −17 mm/a. It is due to the opposite vertical displacements induced by the Earth surface’s porous and elastic response to groundwater depletion. Besides, the distinct renewal characteristics of shallow and deep groundwater in NCP are discussed. The GPS-based vertical displacement time series, to some extent, can reflect the quicker recovery of shallow unconfined groundwater than the deep confined groundwater in NCP; through one month earlier to attain the maximum height for CGPS stations nearby shallow groundwater depression cones than those nearby deep groundwater depression cones.

In southern Tibet, ongoing vertical and horizontal motions due to the collision between India and Eurasia are monitored by large numbers of global positioning system (GPS) continuous and campaign sites installed in the past decade. Displacements measured by GPS usually include tectonic deformation as well as non-tectonic, time-dependent signals. To estimate the regional long-term tectonic deformation using GPS more precisely, seasonal elastic deformation signals associated with surface loading must be removed from the observations. In this study, we focus on seasonal variation in vertical and horizontal motions of southern Tibet by performing a joint analysis of GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) and GPS data, not only using continuous sites but also GPS campaign-mode sites. We found that the GPS-observed and GRACE-modeled seasonal oscillations are in good agreements, and a seasonal displacement model demonstrates that the main reason for seasonal variations in southern Tibet is from the summer monsoon and its precipitation. The biggest loading appears from July to August in the summer season. Vertical deformations observed by GPS and modeled by GRACE are two to three times larger than horizontal oscillations, and the north components demonstrate larger amplitudes than the east components. We corrected the GPS position time series using the GRACE-modeled seasonal variations, which gives significant reductions in the misfit and weighted root-mean-squares (WRMS). Misfit ( χ 2 divided by degree of freedom) reductions for campaign sites range between 20% and 56% for the vertical component, and are much smaller for the horizontal components. Moreover, time series of continuous GPS (cGPS) sites near the 2015 Nepal earthquakes must be corrected using appropriate models of seasonal loading for analyzing postseismic deformation to avoid biasing estimates of the postseismic relaxation.

The use of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) for monitoring changes in terrestrial water storage (TWS) is growing. However, the density of GNSS stations is sparse in most areas, and the widely used Green’s function (GF) method cannot provide a satisfactory resolution for inversion problems. As the Slepian basis function (SBF) method has been successfully used for gravity inversions, GNSS geodesists have recently applied the SBF method to GNSS displacements. However, the evaluation of TWS differences inferred from GNSS using the SBF and the GF has been rarely assessed. In this study, we use both the GF and the SBF methods to investigate the TWS in Yunnan by using more than ten years (2010–2021) of GNSS observations. We observe a remarkable consistency between the two inversion methods employed for GNSS data, as well as a strong agreement with equivalent water heights (EWH) inferred from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE Follow-On (GFO), hydrological model (GLDAS-NOAH), and precipitation data, despite variations in the amplitude. Furthermore, affected by monsoon climate and topography, Yunnan is prone to drought. We analyze the main nine drought events, evaluate the connection between GNSS-inverted TWS during 2010–2021, and find that almost all droughts in Yunnan occurred during the "trough period" within the GNSS-DSI.

The precision of railway map is becoming a significant issue for autonomous train scheduling, monitoring and maintenance, related location-based service (LBS), and further ensuring travel safety. Mobile 3D laser scanning is an efficient method for making relative high-precision railway track maps, particularly during the night period of railway maintenance, for light detection and ranging (LiDAR) can work without ambient light. In this paper, we propose an efficient and accurate railway track vectorization method based on the LiDAR point clouds from the self-built train Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) system. Our method takes full use of railway track geometry and reflection intensity feature of LiDAR, without any trajectory prior information. Firstly, clear track points are filtered by intensity; then, a K-means clustering fused Region-Grow Fitting algorithm is applied. It can not only extract the line vector of railway track, but also can tell the track branches apart, especially on bends and turnout. Experiments were carried on using point clouds with an average density of 490 points per square meter. The experimental results show that the method not only can quickly extract linear objects such as railway track and catenary, but also can detect the railways even in complex real-world topologies such as at bends and turnouts. The precision of the detection area in bends and turnouts are 90.32% and 81.31% respectively, the sensitivity is 83.27% and 83.33%, respectively. Moreover, it can identify the track networks.

The precipitable water vapor (PWV) is a key parameter to reflect atmospheric water vapor, which can be derived by the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technique with high accuracy and temporal resolution. PWV is an important parameter for weather forecasts and climate research. To develop high accurate PWV prediction model, we firstly combine the wavelet analysis (Wa), long short-term memory neural network (LSTM) and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) algorithms as WLA model for the GNSS PWV prediction. Wa, LSTM, ARIMA in WLA separate the random noise, predict the nonlinear and linear trend in PWV, respectively. Afterward, the WLA model is compared with LSTM, ARIMA, wavelet neural networks (WNN) and the multivariable linear regression method (MLR). WLA model shows the best result in the five prediction models in terms of the root mean square error (RMSE, 0.19-0.82 mm) and mean absolute error (MAE, 0.01-0.07), which are 55.48% and 55.32% lower than other models, and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE, 76.53%-99.7%) is 9.42% greater than other models. For further analysis, we also study the WLA performance in different months using one-month's data as training length. The result shows that WLA has good effects in predicting PWV in different months and the average NSE of WLA are 95%. In addition, the predicted PWV of the WLA model within 3 hours is found to be accurate and reliable (RMSE<2 mm, RE60%). This study demonstrates the good performance of WLA to predict GNSS PWV.

Powerline detection is becoming a significant issue for powerline monitoring and maintenance, which further ensures transmission security. As an efficient method, laser scanning has attracted considerable attention in powerline detection for its high precision and robustness during the night period. However, due to occlusion and varying point density, gaps will appear in scans and greatly influence powerline detection by over–clustering, insufficient extraction, or misclassification in existing methods. Moreover, this situation will be worse in terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), because TLS suffers more from gaps due to its unique ground–based scanning mode compared to other laser scanning systems. Thereby, this paper explores a robust method to repair gaps for extracting powerlines from TLS data. Firstly, a hierarchical clustering method is used to extract the powerlines. During the clustering, gaps are repaired based on neighborhood relations of powerline candidates, and repaired gaps can create continuous neighborhood relations that ensure the execution of the clustering method in return. Test results show that the hierarchical clustering method is robust in powerline extraction with repaired gaps. Secondly, reconstruction is performed for further detection. Pylon–powerline connections are found by the slope change method, and powerlines with multi–span are successfully fitted using these connections. Experiment shows that it is feasible to find connections for multi–span reconstruction.
