In view of the effect of water on the physical and mechanical parameters of natural gypsum rock, in this study, gypsum rock in the goaf of the gypsum mine in the Jiangsu Province was selected as the research object, and gypsum rock samples were prepared with different immersion times. In addition, uniaxially tests were performed separately on the gypsum rock samples. Compression and scanning electron microscopy experiments were carried out to analyze the effects of immersion time on the uniaxial compressive strength, elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and microstructure of gypsum. The results show that the uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of gypsum are inversely proportional to the water content. However, the Poisson’s ratio is direly proportional to the water content, and the failure mode is destroyed by the brittle fracture of a single crack and is transformed into the shear ductile failure of the Y-shaped crack. Microscopically, with increasing immersion time, the bonds in the crystal of the microporous cracks and microcrack tips are weakened by hydrolysis, and the macroscopic structure is complicated by the internal structure of gypsum, and the end of the crack is expanded by the compressive action of water. Based on the damage mechanics, the evolution equation of gypsum soaking softening damage based on time factor was derived. The relationship between the brittleness coefficient and softening damage variable is revealed, providing a theoretical basis for the determination of the softening degree of gypsum in the goaf.

A series of flow experiments were performed on matched fractures to study the problem of non-Darcy flow in fractured media. Five rock fractures of different roughness were generated using indirect tensile tests, and their surface topographies were measured using a stereo topometric scanning system. The fracture was assumed to be a self-affine surface, and its roughness and anisotropy were quantified by the fractal dimension. According to the flow tortuosity effect, the nonlinear flow was characterized by hydraulic tortuosity and surface tortuosity power law relationships based on Forchheimer’s law. Fracture seepage experiments conducted with two injection directions (0° and 90°) showed that Forchheimer’s law described the nonlinear flow well. Both the proposed model and Chen’s double-parameter model gave similar results to the experiment, but the match was closer with the proposed model. On this basis, a new formula for the critical Reynolds number is proposed, which serves to distinguish linear flow and Forchheimer flow.

Automatic and fast rock classification identification is an important part of geotechnical intelligent survey system. Image based supervised deep learning analysis, especially for convolutional neural networks (CNN), has potential in optimizing lithologic classification and interpretation using borehole core images. However, the accuracy and efficiency of lithology identification models are low at present. In this work, a systematic and enormous rock data framework based on the geological rock classification system is firstly established to provide rock learning datasets. The dataset is composed of approximately 150,000 images of rock samples, which covers igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, and metamorphic rocks. Secondly, based on CNN-deep transfer learning algorithm, an end-to-end, image-to-label rock lithology identification is established. Finally, the generalization of the proposed model and the field drilling core verification test show that the constructed intelligent rock recognition model has an ability to identify rocks quickly and accurately, and the recognition accuracy of 12 kinds of common engineering rocks is more than 95%. The proposed rock intelligent classification model provides a convenient and fast tool for field geologists and scientific researchers.

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is an efficient method for the conversion of deep coal resources into energy. The scope of this work is to model the subsidence of four gasification cavities with a size of 30 m × 30 m × 15 m, separated by 15 m wide pillars. Two scenarios of gasification sequence are modelled, one with the gasification of cavities 1 and 2 followed by 3 and 4, and the other one with the sequence of cavities 1 and 3, followed by 2 and 4. The results show that the final surface subsidence after gasification of four cavities is 9.8 mm and the gasification sequence has an impact only on the subsidence at the intermediate stage but has no impact on the final subsidence after all four cavities are formed, when only the elasticity regime is considered. Additionally, the maximum surface subsidence for the studied cavities of different sizes ranges from 0.016 mm to 7.14 mm, and the relationship between the subsidence and the cavity volume is approximately linear. Finally, a prediction model of surface subsidence deformation is built up using the elastic plate theory, and the formula of surface deformation at a random point is given. The maximum difference between measured and calculated deformation is 4.6%, demonstrating that the proposed method can be used to predict the ground subsidence induced by UCG.

The two-phase displacement in rock fractures is a critical scientific challenge in deep energy development projects, characterized by the intricate and dynamic flow patterns resulting from the complex fracture geometry and mutual interference between the two-phase fluids. The present study involves the construction of a three-dimensional rough fracture fine model using the fast Fourier transform and Gaussian distribution method. The phase field-finite element method is employed to simulate the dynamic displacement of water-oil flow and the evolution of the water-oil interface, aiming to investigate the impact of roughness, aperture, and wettability on the viscous fingering pattern observed in rough fractures. The numerical results indicate that the immiscible two-phase displacement presents a viscous fingering pattern at a high flow rate. Moreover, the greater the roughness is, the higher the number of fingering is, and the more volatile the change in displacement velocity is. The width of the wet-phase flow channel increases proportionally with the fracture aperture increasing. Furthermore, the morphology of immiscible two-phase interface within fractures is also influenced by the wetting angle, and the fingering, bifurcation, and crushing phenomena appear in the oil-wet state with the strong displacement interface instability. Finally, a fractal model of relative permeability for waterflooding in rough fractures is proposed based on the cubic law of flow and fractal dimension of aperture distribution, which has been validated through comparison with numerical results.
