Dynamically developing urbanization causes a number of environmental effects, including those related to the chemical transformation of soils. Relatively less information about the urban areas of the Arctic and Subarctic zones, constructed mostly on permafrost and intensively populated areas can be found. By the example of the analysis of basic soil properties and concentrations of trace metals in the soils of the cities of Salekhard, Urengoy, Nadym, Novy Urengoy and Gaz Sale (the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District), as well as various functional zones within the cities, the relationship between the age of the cities, the level of anthropogenic pressure and the type of parent materials and the character of accumulation of metals in the soil profile of urban soils have been described. The direct correlation was found between the content of Pb, Cr, Ni, As and soil sorption characteristics. In young cities built on sandy sediments, there is less accumulation of heavy metals in the topsoil horizons. Relatively higher concentrations of Cu and Cd were noted in soils of industrialized cities, regardless of functional zones. The higher content of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As and Pb has been registered in older zones also frequently used for residential purposes. The calculated values of the PI index for some functional zones of young cities show the medium and high content of heavy metals. The analysis of Igeo and PLI indices shows a large diversity both in relation to individual cities and their functional zones. Soil quality, in spite of the high level of anthropogenic load, was assessed as mostly satisfactory.

The progressing urbanization leads to the growth of buildings within the cities and taking up new areas for investments. Uncontrolled urban sprawl entails a number of consequences resulting in the soil sealing of the areas which has been permeable so far. Cutting off deeper soil layers from gas exchange and access to water causes a reduction in biological activity and biodiversity. That is why EU considers soil sealing as one of the main problems of the 21st century. The paper attempts to analyze the progressing urbanization on the one of the Zielona Góra housing estates - Jędrzychów Residential Area.

Many regions in Europe have unique and characteristic landscapes, partly resulting from historical and/or current economic activities that have become a contemporary land mark. At present, there is a trend to show these unique features by emphasizing local traditions or recreating historical ones that were often forgotten a long time ago. Viticulture is one of these activities that becomes an important element of the culture and landscape development. This is also a determinant of the agri- and gastronomic tourism. Historically, Central and Eastern Europe had smaller vineyard areas than Western and particularly Southern European regions, mainly because of the climate conditions. However, viticulture traditions were developed in some western parts of Poland, especially in Lower Silesia. Our analysis of historical documents indicated that in the past cities such as Zielona Góra, Gubin, Krosno, Sulechów and Świebodzin were well-known European viticulture centres. Nowadays, as a result of the stronger position of regions in Europe, their wine-making history is being recognized, new production vineyards are being created, and campaigns are being launched to encourage vineyards and visits for tasting local wines. Our study of regional economic trends has revealed that oenological tourism has perceived as an important element of the economic development of historical wine-making regions and former vineyards. Museums, thematic parks, tourist routes and even wine spa are being established. These activities perfectly fit in with agricultural tourism, creating an important group of the wine tourism and support interesting, individual forms and characteristics of regional culture. Based on the experiences of the Lubusz Province (Poland) a conceptual framework for the development of oenological tourism has been proposed for other Central and Eastern European, but also worldwide regions with a history of viticultural land use.

Using the alkaline fly ash after combustion of lignite as the acid soils neutralizer is a technique known for decades. Due to many disadvantages of the direct fly ash application it is sought to modify this material prior to its use. The process of fly ash modification in the magnetic activator involved breaking up fly ash to small grain sizes in order to obtain a material with a very large specific surface and modified properties. The purpose of the research was to compare the properties of unmodified fly ash with those of ash modified in the magnetic activator in terms of its usefulness in the neutralization of acidic soils. Unmodified fly ash was classified as a medium-grained calciferous material. The basic components of ash were silicates (33.28% of SiO2) and calcium compounds (31.26% of CaO). It has a low heavy metal content falling within a range characteristic of coal ash and meeting soil quality standard requirements. As a result of activation, the following changes were obtained in the properties of modified ash compared with unmodified ash: sand fraction content – reduced to 0.40, silt fraction content – increased by 1.40, silt fraction content – increased by 1.68, content of the sum of the dust and silt fractions – increased by 1.49, specific surface – increased by 1.65, fineness – reduced by 0.48. Modification of fly ash in the magnetic activator was found to have improved the physical properties of ash as acidic soil neutralizer, and its chemical properties make such an application possible.

Due to a significant increase in mining activity and subsequent ecosystem disturbances, it is becoming increasingly important to understand how degraded, unproductive quarries can be converted into new, self-sustaining communities that develop into natural environments. Former limestone quarry was investigated with aim to determine the best reclamation practice for surfaces of former lime rock quarries. Effects of spontaneous succession and forestry reclamation restoration approaches on vegetation and soil features were studied. The study was conducted in one of the largest limestone quarries of the Leningrad region, south taiga region. Species composition and vegetation cover were estimated for different plant communities within each ecotype of the quarry. Also soil characteristics were evaluated at each plot. We found that the main differences between plots were due to their position in the landscape; the most similar communities colonize similar ecotypes. On flat landforms, biodiversity is reduced under biological reclamation. At the sites under spontaneous succession, the level of biodiversity increases. In terms of biodiversity conservation and economic benefit, spontaneous succession is preferable to forestry reclamation for the restoration of carbonate substrates. After examining CO2 emissions from the quarry as a result of weathering of carbonates and soil respiration, as well as the level of CO2 sequestration from the atmosphere, we show that the establishment of certain landscape forms within former quarries can help to reduce atmospheric CO2.

The ongoing management of river valleys has had a negative impact on the effectiveness of flood protection of former floodplains. The risk of flooding and flood damage is constantly increasing. As a result of disorganized industrialization, we are dealing with the accumulation of precipitation which flows much faster from the catchment area to the main river. In turn, due to erosion and the sedimentation processes, the capacity of the main river bed and its tributaries is limited. The solution to the problem may be multidirectional flood control measures, which were designed for the Lubuskie part of the Oder River, from Nowa Sól to Milsko. They concern: the construction of a flood wall in Nowa Sól, the modernization of the flood embankments in the Nowa Sol area and reconstruction of the former floodplain in Milsko. The paper presents the geoengineering conditions of these projects.

The process of the construction of engineering structures situated within glacitectonically disturbed areas cause the necessity to link engineering operation with knowledge of geological processes. One of the examples of such a structure was the construction of the west bypass of Zielona Góra. The roadworks were connected with the necessity of deep excavations into glacitectonically disturbed soil structures. This caused intense changes in the soil mass and - as a consequence - loss of slope stability and the construction of landslides. At the construction stage numerous landslides were already active, which additionally increased during intensive road use. In spite of technical stabilization, there was a risk of loss of slope stability, which is a consequence of stresses in soil mass and engineering activity. This article presents the results of the monitoring of the slope stability during intensive road exploitation.

This paper presents the impact of rainfall on the degree of flood risk in the basin of the middle Bobr River in western Poland. When the average rainfall level reaches 15 to 20 mm, this apparently calm river may dramatically change its character within just one week. The most important flood risks are flood waves in the headwaters. Because of the mountain character of the river basin, during intensive rainfall there is a huge surface runoff and the water level rises rapidly in the river. This phenomenon was observed in June 2017 in the town of Zagan (Lubuskie Voivodeship). It has been shown that the course and dynamics of hydrological processes occurring in the Bobr River basin depend on its physical and geographical characteristics and the influence of anthropogenic factors. The location is one of the main cause of numerous floods for Zagan, on the other hand changes in land development plays significant meaning in flood hazards. Continuous monitoring of the river is the basis for a comprehensive forecast of flood risks.

Soil sealing is the most common type of soil degradation in the urban areas. Soil under the different pavement and road covers shows many important disturbances in the exchange of matter and energy between the biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere, what is leading to further disorders. Many important differences between the Ekranic Technosols behaviour are connected with the tightness of technic surface. As usual a diversification between soil properties under the complete (e.g. asphalt roads) and non-complete sealing (pavement bricks) is observed. The paper presents the physico-chemical properties of Ekranic Technosols overhung under bitumen surface, concrete slabs and concrete paving stones. The effect of top layers compaction is visible in all cases, especially in the bulk density, total porosity and capillary water capacity. The pH of the soils was different belonging on soil material and land preparation technique. The top layers of the tested soils can be characterized by the low content of organic carbon. The technogenic layers located directly under the sealed surface showed a lower content of some heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) than the layers below. However, in some cases the opposite situation can be seen. There were no significant differences in the content of trace elements under different technic surfaces.

Technogenic materials are common in SUITMA’s and may cause significant changes in the properties of soils covering urban areas. Investigations showing the diversification of properties of these materials to consider their role as a bedrock of Technosols are of interest of soil scientists and urban planners. The research was carried out in Zielona Gora urban area (western Poland). The technogenic materials were collected from anthropogenic deposits building layers 0–20(40) cm of the urban Technosols. A high content of technogenic materials deposited in urban Technosols is frequently occurred and expected situation. Many of the analysed materials have a high chemical reactivity, which can induce significant changes in the properties of urban soils, mainly in terms of pH, the content of CaCO3, carbon and EC. Some materials like slags, ashes and sewage sludges contain significant quantities of Cd, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn. The diversification of artefacts should be reflected in the soil classification system, especially when boundary conditions are specified for inclusion of soils into the Technosol group.

Existing river valley development methods which have been used for a significant period of time, as well as the use of land for construction of residential developments, have led to negative consequences for the environment. The agricultural use of land and its protection with hydraulic structures has restricted the natural flood area of the river. According to EU law, the risk of catastrophic flooding should be reduced, and its effects minimized. Sustainable water management determines the effectiveness of flood protection in the whole river basin. The paper presents the flood protection on the Odra River in the segment between Nowa Sól and Cigacice, with special emphasis on the possibility of reconstructing the former flood polders in the Middle Odra Region that existed before the year 1945, including the polder in Milsko.

The aim of the study was to determine electrical resistivity peculiarities of tundra and forest tundra soils and soil-permafrost layers of the Yamal region. Measurements of electrical resistivity of soil and permafrost strata were performed with a portable device LandMapper (to a depth of 300-500 cm). These measurements allow determination of the values of apparent electrical resistivity of soils and permafrost at different depths and determination of the depths of the permafrost table on each key plot. It was found that there are several trends in vertical distribution of apparent electrical resistivity values. The first trend is a monotonous increase in electrical resistivity values to the depth. It may be explained by the increasing electrical resistivity within the soil depth in relation to the increase in permafrost density. The second trend is a sharp decrease replaced by a gradual increase in electrical resistivity values caused by changing of non-frozen friable debris to frozen massive crystalline rock. These differences were related to the type of landscape: flat lowlands composed of friable grounds underlain by permafrost or friable grounds with permafrost underlain by a rock crystalline layer.

The article presents the analysis of roundabouts design aspects including the location of underground and overground infrastructure. Authors also undertake an attempt to assess the existing situation with planning conditions. Many differences depended on the roundabout size, location, surroundings, natural conditions, landform technology used were noted. Roundabouts design should include both the natural arrangements and art installations, increasing the area of urban green areas in parallel using the area as a place for works of art exposure. For Zielona Góra urban area this is of particular importance because of the multitude of roundabouts and their good position in the city structure.

Lead, as a heavy metal, is harmful to living organisms (both plants and animals) and it is relatively mobile in the environment. In this article we present the results of the monitoring of the lead content in local allotment gardens (Zielona Góra, Poland). We examined both the total and the phytoavailable form. Soil samples were collected in eight places in the allotment gardens, and two places in the neighbourhood of the allotment gardens. The lead content in the soil met the Polish soil ground standards (Regulation by the Minister of the Environment of 9.09.2002). The total content of lead varied from 21 to 39 mg kg-1, (12–14 mg kg-1 at reference point) and the form potentially available for plants from 10 to 19 mg kg-1 (6–7 mg kg-1 at reference point). The content of lead does not exceed the threshold values according to Polish law.

Substances present in soils are of natural or anthropogenic origin. As a result of industrial activity, large quantities of potentially hazardous elements such as heavy metals are deposited in the environment. They may occur as unavailable (similar to the total form), or available for plants. The content of nickel in the soil from the former sanitary zone of the Głogów Copper Smelter does not exceed the Polish threshold values for industrial areas; however, its content may be influenced by other factors such as content of organic matter and soil reaction. In this article we present the results of the nickel pollution in the former sanitary zone of the Głogów Copper Smelter.
