Moisture content is extremely imoprtant to the processes of storage, packaging, and transportation of grains. In this study, a portable moisture measuring device was developed based on microwave microstrip sensors. The device is composed of three parts: a microwave circuit module, a real-time measurement module, and software to display the results. This work proposes an improvement measure by optimizing the thickness of paddy rice samples (8–13 cm) and adding the ambient temperatures and the moisture contents (13.66–27.02% w.b.) at a 3.00 GHz frequency. A random forest, decision tree, k-nearest neighbor, and support vector machine were applied to predict the moisture content in the paddy rice. Microwave characteristics, phase shift, and temperature compensation were selected as the input variables to the prediction models, which have achieved high accuracy. Among those prediction models, the random forest model yielded the best performance with highest accuracy and stability (R2 = 0.99, RMSE = 0.28, MAE = 0.26). The device showed a relatively stable performance (the maximum average absolute error was 0.55%, the minimum absolute error was 0.17%, the mean standard deviation was 0.18%, the maximum standard deviation was 0.41%, and the minimum standard deviation was 0.08%) within the moisture content range of 13–30%. The instrument has the advantages of real-time, simple structure, convenient operation, low cost, and portability. This work is expected to provide an important reference for the real-time in situ measurement of agricultural products, and to be of great significance for the development of intelligent agricultural equipment.

Aroma and taste are the most important attributes of alcoholic beverages. In the study, the self-developed electronic tongue (e-tongue) and electronic nose (e-nose) were used for evaluating the marked ages of rice wines. Six types of feature data sets (e-tongue data set, e-nose data set, direct-fusion data set, weighted-fusion data set, optimized direct-fusion data set, and optimized weighted-fusion data set) were used for identifying rice wines with different wine ages. Pearson coefficient analysis and variance inflation factor (VIF) analysis were used to optimize the fusion matrixes by removing the multicollinear information. Two types of discrimination methods (principal component analysis (PCA) and locality preserving projections (LPP)) were used for classifying rice wines, and LPP performed better than PCA in the discrimination work. The best result was obtained by LPP based on the weighted-fusion data set, and all the samples could be classified clearly in the LPP plot. Therefore, the weighted-fusion data were used as independent variables of partial least squares regression, extreme learning machine, and support vector machines (LIBSVM) for evaluating wine ages, respectively. All the methods performed well with good prediction results, and LIBSVM presented the best correlation coefficient (R2 ≥ 0.9998).

A novel voltammetric electronic tongue (VE-tongue) system based on three nanocomposites modified working electrodes was used for the discrimination of red wine from different geographical origins. The three types of modified working electrodes were fabricated to detect glucose (Glu), tartaric acid (TA), and non-specific flavor information in a red wine sample, respectively. The electrochemical properties of three electrodes were tested by cyclic voltammetric method, and pH, accumulation time, and scan rates were optimized for Glu and TA sensors. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray proton spectrum (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used for the characterization of modified materials. This sensor array was then applied to identify four kinds of red wines from different geographical origins, and the multi-frequency and potential steps (STEP) method was used to obtain flavor information regarding rice wines. The classification ability of this VE-tongue system was evaluated by using partial least squares (PLS) regression and principal component analysis (PCA), while back propagation neural network (BPNN), random forest (RF), support vector machines (SVM), deep neural network (DNN), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) were used for the prediction. The results showed that PCA could explain about the 95.7% of the total variance, and BPNN performed best in the prediction work (the prediction accuracy was 95.8%). Therefore, the VE-tongue system with BPNN was chosen to effectively discriminate red wines from different geographical origins, and the novel VE-tongue aiming at red wine discrimination with high accuracy and lower cost was established.

Black-odor rivers are polluted urban rivers that often are black in color and emit a foul odor. They are a severe problem in aquatic systems because they can negatively impact the living conditions of residents and the functioning of ecosystems and local economies. Therefore, it is crucial to identify ways to mitigate the water quality parameters that characterize black-odor rivers. In this study, we tested the efficacy of an electronic nose (E-nose), which was inexpensive, fast, and easy to operate, for qualitative recognition analysis and quantitative parameter prediction of samples collected from the Yueliang River in Huzhou City. The E-nose sensors were cross-sensitive to the volatile compounds in black-odor water. The device recognized the samples from different river sites with 100% accuracy based on linear discriminant analysis. For water quality parameter predictions, partial least squares regression models based on E-nose signals were established, and the coefficients between the actual water quality parameters (pH, chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen content, and total phosphorous content) and the predicted values were very high (R2 > 0.90) both in the training and testing sets. These results indicate that E-nose technology can be a fast, easy-to-build, and cost-effective detection system for black-odor river monitoring.

Incineration leachate is a hazardous liquid waste that requires careful management due to its high levels of organic and inorganic pollutants, and it can have serious environmental and health implications if not properly treated and monitored. This study applied a novel electronic nose to monitor the microbial communities and chemical characteristics of incineration leachate. The e-nose data were aggregated using principal component analysis (PCA) and T-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (TSNE). Random forest (RF) and gradient-boosted decision tree (GBDT) algorithms were employed to establish relationships between the e-nose signals and the chemical characteristics (such as pH, chemical oxygen demand, and ammonia nitrogen) and microbial communities (including Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes) of the incineration leachate. The PCA-GBDT models performed well in recognizing leachate samples, achieving 100% accuracy for the training set and 98.92% accuracy for the testing data without overfitting. The GBDT models based on the original data performed exceptionally well in predicting changes in chemical parameters, with R2 values exceeding 0.99 for the training set and 0.86 for the testing set. The PCA-GBDT models also demonstrated superior performance in predicting microbial community composition, achieving R2 values above 0.99 and MSE values below 0.0003 for the training set and R2 values exceeding 0.86 and MSE values below 0.015 for the testing set. This research provides an efficient monitoring method for the effective enforcement and implementation of monitoring programs by utilizing e-noses combined with data mining to provide more valuable insights compared with traditional instrumental measurements.

Waste incineration is regarded as an ideal method for municipal solid waste disposal (MSW), with the advantages of waste-to-energy, lower secondary pollution, and greenhouse gas emission mitigation. For incineration leachate, the information from the headspace gas that varies at different processing processes and might be useful for chemical analysis, is ignored. The study applied a novel electronic nose (EN) to mine the information from leachate headspace gas. By combining manifold learnings (principal component analysis (PCA) and isometric feature mapping (ISOMAP), and uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP) and ensemble techniques (light gradient boosting machine (lightGBM) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBT)), EN based on the UMAP-XGBT model had the best classification performance with a 99.95% accuracy rate in the training set and a 95.83% accuracy rate in the testing set. The UMAP-XGBT model showed the best prediction ability for leachate chemical parameters (pH, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, ammonia, and total phosphorus), with R2 higher than 0.99 both in the training and testing sets. This is the first study of the EN application for leachate monitoring, offering an easier and quicker detection method than traditional instrumental measurements for the enforcement and implementation of effective monitoring programs.
