This study aimed at establishing the optimal conditions for the classic extraction of phenolic compounds from Prunus spinosa L. fruits. The effects of different parameters, i.e., ethanol concentration in the extraction solvent (mixture of ethanol and water), operation temperature, and extraction time, on process responses were evaluated. Total phenolic content (TPC), total anthocyanin content (TAC), antioxidant capacity (AC), and contents of protocatechuic acid (PA), caffeic acid (CA), vanillic acid (VA), rutin hydrate (RH), and quercetin (Q) of fruit extracts were selected as process responses. A synergistic effect of obtaining high values of TPC, TAC, AC, PA, and VA was achieved for the extraction in 50% ethanol at 60 °C for 30 min. At a higher level of process temperature, the extraction of protocatechuic acid and vanillic acid was enhanced, but the flavonoids, i.e., rutin hydrate and quercetin, were degraded. A lower temperature should be used to obtain a higher amount of flavonoids. TPC, TAC, AC, and phenolic acid contents (PA, CA, and VA) in the extract samples obtained at an ethanol concentration of 50–100%, a temperature of 30–60 °C, and an extraction time of 30 min were strongly directly correlated.

The aim of the present study consists in the obtaining of a hybrid material film, obtained using TiO2 P25 and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The film manufacturing process involved realization of physical mixtures of TiO2 P25 and AgNPs dispersions. The size distribution of the AgNPs proved to be a key factor determining the photodegradation activity of the materials measured using methyl orange. The best result was 33% degradation of methyl orange (MO) after 150 min. The second approach was the generation of AgNPs on the surface of TiO2 P25. The obtained hybrid material presents photocatalytic activity of 45% MO degradation after 150 min. The developed materials were characterized by UV‐VIS, SEM, and DLS analyses.

This paper presents the main properties of magnesium phosphate cements (MPCs) to be used as coatings for passive fire protection of steel structures. The influence of various additions, i.e., waste glass powder, fly ash, a styrene–acrylic dispersion, and expandable graphite, on the fire behavior and the adhesion to steel substrates of magnesium phosphate coatings is presented in this paper. The setting time of studied cements is extended when magnesia, the main component of MPCs, is partially replaced with fly ash or/and waste glass powder. The mineralogical composition of these cements, before and after thermal treatment at 1050 °C, was assessed by X-ray diffraction and could explain the changes in compressive strength, volume, and mass recorded for the thermally treated specimens. The studied magnesium phosphate coatings have a good adherence to the steel substrate (assessed by a pull-off test) both before and after direct contact with a flame (fire test) and decrease the temperature of the steel substrate by 30% with respect to the one recorded for the uncoated steel plate.

Currently there is a drive towards the minimisation and reclamation of valuable materials from the waste products of the food and beverage industry. This can be achieved through the extraction of residual nutraceuticals from such materials. Tomato pomace contains carotenoids and other chemicals which can be extracted directly into edible oils to improve the health-giving properties of such oils. We report here a novel green solvent, fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE), which is significantly more effective than sunflower oil and hexane for the extraction of lycopene and beta-carotene from tomato skin waste. FAEE are a non-toxic renewable resource that is environmentally friendly and to our knowledge has never been used as a vegetal extraction fluid. The efficiency of FAEE extraction was significantly improved relative to both sunflower oil and hexane under ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) conditions. In addition, FAEE have the additional and significant advantage that once enriched with the extracted nutraceuticals can be used directly as a food additive.

Phycocyanin was extracted from Spirulina platensis using conventional extraction (CE), direct ultrasonic-assisted extraction (direct UAE), indirect ultrasonic-assisted extraction (indirect UAE), and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) methods at different temperatures, extraction intervals, stirring rate, and power intensities while maintaining the same algae to solvent ratio (1:15 w/v). The optimization of the extraction parameters indicated that the direct UAE yielded the highest phycocyanin concentration (29.31 ± 0.33 mg/mL) and antioxidant activity (23.6 ± 0.56 mg TE/g algae), while MAE achieved the highest purity (Rp = 0.5 ± 0.002). Based on the RP value, phycocyanin extract obtained by MAE (1:15 w/v algae to solvent ratio, 40 min, 40 °C, and 900 rpm) was selected as active compound in an alginate-based hydrogel formulation designed as potential wound dressings. Phycocyanin extracts and loaded hydrogels were characterized by FT-IR analysis. SEM analysis confirmed a porous structure for both blank and phycocyanin loaded hydrogels, while the mechanical properties remained approximately unchanged in the presence of phycocyanin. Phycocyanin release kinetics was investigated at two pH values using Zero-order, First-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetics models. The Higuchi model best fitted the experimental results. The R2 value at higher pH was nearly 1, indicating a superior fit compared with lower pH values.
