The paradox of User-Centered Design “creation vs. destruction” leaves us a question: the intention of design activities is to promote human well-being, but why do we sometimes bring negative effects on ourselves? This paper discusses the reasons for destruction. The design knowledge mainly introduces the care-relationship on “designer-things”, “things-client”, and “things-environment” entitled “partial care”, but ignores other care-relationships on “designer-people” and “people-environment”. This problem is identified as a lack of full knowledge of care in the existing design field. Therefore, in this paper, the concept of “complete care” and a theoretical framework are proposed to solve the paradox of design, indicating that designers must understand the full meaning of care. “Complete care” can help designers overcome the destruction to achieve an ideal sustainable future.

This paper addresses sustainability and gaming from an interior design education perspective, emphasizing the importance of understanding the meaning of ‘complete care’ and raising the awareness of care among design students. The four-step inquiry was adopted as a methodological framework. The theoretical model of ‘complete care’ was proposed and the interactive game ‘Ideal Home’ was developed to raise the awareness of care in design. The game imitated a conversation activity between the interior designer and the client at the early stage of the design process and assisted ‘designers’ to ask meaningful questions from ‘clients’ so as to develop a better understanding of their care needs. Six postgraduate students with interior design backgrounds played the game, and they were observed and interviewed. The results suggested that the participants’ understanding of care improved after they played the game and they were able to identify more issues and detailed needs through the conversations. The significance of the research is that it proposes a theoretical framework to explain the meaning of ‘complete care’ in the design process, and also develops a practical tool (i.e., the game) to educate designers about care.

When older people move into care homes from their own homes, they usually face a confusing situation: they live in a care home, but they do not have a homey feeling. In order to help older residents integrate into the institutional environment, this paper proposes the idea of ‘home as experience’. The study inquiries how design can play a role in transforming a care home into a home, thus influencing residents to regain their sense of belonging. Firstly, the complex meaning of home is discussed through interdisciplinary literature review, and is used to develop the conceptual framework with four dimensions (cultural, physical, social and spiritual). Secondly, critical issues in care homes are revealed. We visited five care homes in the Putuo District of Shanghai, and identified four problematic aspects based on the conceptual framework. Thirdly, according to Dewey’s experience theory, the method of transforming a care home into a home is put forward, including: to identify cultural symbols; to use physical spaces; to build social relations; to discover value believes. Their composition and cooperation construct a process of experiencing being-at-home. This study does not only identify the challenge of care home design by understanding the concept of home, but also provides design opportunities through applying the experience theory.

This paper explores the relationship between designers and users from the perspective of care. Methods included a critical investigation of literature about the ideal care relationship, interviews with Hong Kong residential designers about their opinion on “designers as care professions” and analyses of these designers’ strategies for interacting with users. The research reveals that designers tend to view themselves as collaborative partners in satisfying users’ needs from the user-centered design perspective. This design approach leads designers to focus on each individual’s desire. But largely ignored their role as active influencers in changing user’s behavior and improving people’s relationships. This study suggests that designers consider residential design from a care-orientated perspective to build a more harmonious relationship with users.

Communicating with older people is more challenging because of age-related cognitive and sensory impairments. How to develop an approach to enable inexperienced and young designers to effectively communicate with older people? A new and pragmatic framework is developed which aims to identify key factors of communication techniques that designers need to learn. This framework can help designers to decide which techniques are most relevant for specific conversation situations. It can also be used to systematically collect communication knowledge and skills as a designer’s personal communication guidance.
