Hydro-wind system output fluctuations are the primary factors used to assess the effects of hydropower on power companies compensating for wind power intermittency. Considering that most fluctuation indices can only characterize one aspect of fluctuations, namely, the quantitative or contour variations, we present a new index that uses the standard deviation (SD) and rotation angle to detect the quantitative variations and contour changes, respectively. Herein, the new index is compared with commonly used indices, specifically, the first-order difference, SD, and Richards-Baker flashiness indices. The results of tests performed using various processes and disposals show that: (1) when dealing with the process by moving average, repeating or overlay disposal, the new index performs comparably to the other indices, while when dealing with the process by zooming disposal, it more fully describes the fluctuation characteristics by taking both quantitative and contour variations into consideration; (2) when the new index is used to characterize the hydro-wind output fluctuations with different resources and capacities, the outcomes coincide with the mechanisms of hydro-wind systems. This study presents a new way to characterize the fluctuation of hydro-wind output.

Small hydropower (SHP) and pumped hydropower storage (PHS) are ideal members of power systems with regard to integrating intermittent power production from wind and PV facilities in modern power systems using the high penetration of renewable energy. Due to the limited capacity of SHP and the geographic restrictions of PHS, these power sources have not been adequately utilized in multi-energy integration. On the one hand, rapidly increasing wind/PV power is mostly situated in remote areas (i.e., mountain and rural areas) and is delivered to core areas (i.e., manufacturing bases and cities) for environmental protection and economic profit. On the other hand, SHP is commonly dispersed in remote areas and PHS is usually located in core areas. This paper proposes a strategy to take advantage of the distribution and regulation features of these renewable energy sources by presenting two models, which includes a remote power system model to explore the potential of SHP to smooth the short-term fluctuations in wind and PV power by minimizing output fluctuations as well as a core power system model to employ PHS to shift the surplus power to the peak period by maximizing the income from selling regenerated power and minimizing output fluctuations. In the proposed first model, the cooperative regulation not only dispatches SHP with a reciprocal output shape to the wind/PV output to smooth the fluctuations but also operates the reservoir with the scheduled total power production by adjusting its output in parallel. The results of a case study based on a municipal power system in Southwestern China show that, with the proposed method, SHP can successfully smooth the short-term fluctuations in wind and PV power without influencing the daily total power production. Additionally, SHP can replace the thermal power production with renewable power production, smooth the thermal output, and further reduce the operation costs of thermal power. By storing the surplus power in the upper reservoir and regenerating the power during the peak period, PHS can obtain not only the economic benefit of selling the power at high prices but also the environmental benefit of replacing non-renewable power with renewable power. This study provides a feasible approach to explore the potential of SHP and PHS in multi-energy integration applications.

To improve the accuracy of short-term wind speed forecasting, we proposed a Gated Recurrent Unit network forecasting method, based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition and a Grid Search Cross Validation parameter optimization algorithm. In this study, first, in the process of decomposing, the set empirical mode of decomposition was introduced to divide the wind time series into high-frequency modal, low-frequency modal, and trend modal, using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Second, during parameter optimization, the grid parameter optimization algorithm was employed in the GRU model to search for the combination of optimal parameters. Third, the improved GRU model was driven with the decomposed components to predict the new components, which were used to obtain the predicted wind speed by modal reorganization. Compared with other models (i.e., the LSTM, GS-LSTM, EEMD-LSTM, and the EEMD-GS-LSTM), the proposed model was applied to the case study on wind speed of a wind farm, located in northwest China. The results showed that the presented forecasting model could reduce the forecasting error (RMSE) from 1.411 m/s to 0.685 m/s and can improve the accuracy of forecasts. This model provides a new approach for short-term wind speed forecasting.

Multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) are widely used to optimize multi-purpose reservoir operations. Considering that most outcomes of MOEAs are Pareto optimal sets with a large number of incomparable solutions, it is not a trivial task for decision-makers (DMs) to select a compromise solution for application purposes. Due to the increasing popularity of data-driven decision-making, we introduce a clustering-based decision-making method into the multi-objective reservoir operation optimization problem. Traditionally, solution selection has been conducted based on trade-off ranking in objective space, and solution characteristics in decision space have been ignored. In our work, reservoir operation processes were innovatively clustered into groups with unique properties in decision space, and the trade-off surfaces were analyzed via clustering in objective space. To attain a suitable performance, a new similarity measure, referred to as the Mei–Wang fluctuation similarity measure (MWFSM), was tailored to reservoir operation processes. This method describes time series in terms of both their shape and quantitative variation. Then, a compromise solution was selected via the joint use of two clustering results. A case study of the Three Gorges cascade reservoirs system under small and medium floods was investigated to verify the applicability of the proposed method. The results revealed that the MWFSM effectively distinguishes reservoir operation processes. Two more operation patterns with similar positions but different shapes were identified via MWFSM when compared with Euclidean distance and the dynamic time warping method. Furthermore, the proposed method decreased the selection range from the whole Pareto optimal set to a set containing relatively few solutions. Finally, a compromise solution was selected.
