Obesity is a common nutrition-related disorder leading to reduced life expectancy in both humans and dogs. With the aim of identifying new prevention and control options, the study objectives were (1) to investigate dog-owner perceptions about obesity in terms of themselves and their dogs, and (2) to identify factors associated with obesity and possible social, environmental and economic drivers for its development in dog owners and their pets. A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was performed across multiple countries. The questionnaire focused on human and canine obesity, associated factors and potential drivers, and was distributed online and in the form of hard copies among dog owners in 11 European countries. In total, 3,185 responses from ten countries were included in multivariable analyses. Between 19.1% and 48.8% of the dog owners reported to be overweight/obese. Owner-reported overweight/obesity in dogs ranged from 6.0% to 31.3% based on body condition score charts, and 31.8% to 69.4% based on body fat index charts. Common factors associated with obesity in owners and their dogs were age, gender and owners’ attitudes to diet and physical activity. Dog owners who did not consider obesity to be a disease were more likely to have obese dogs.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the concentrations of cytokines IL-4, IL-6, and IL-10 and acute phase protein amyloid A in milk and in serum from cows with subclinical mastitis caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci and from healthy cows. The blood and milk samples were obtained from 35 midlactation, multiparous (between parities 2 and 4) Holstein-Friesian cows. In the milk samples from 20 cows with subclinical mastitis, the following species of Staphylococcus were detected: Staphylococcus xylosus (8 samples), Staphylococcus chromogenes (6 samples), Staphylococcus haemolyticus (2 samples), Staphylococcus simulans (2 samples), and Staphylococcus sciuri (2 samples). The results of the present study indicate that the level of IL-6 in cows suffering from subclinical mastitis tended to be high in both serum and milk (432.09 and 254.32 pg/mL) compared with the level in healthy cows (164.47 and 13.02 pg/mL, respectively). Amyloid A value also was significantly higher in milk of unhealthy cows compared with cows without subclinical mastitis (790.2 and 360.5 ng/mL). No significant differences were found in levels of amyloid A in serum of both tested groups of cows (2,680.0 and 2,720.0 ng/mL). In contrast, concentration of IL-4 was significantly lower both in serum and in milk of cows with staphylococcal mastitis (86.1 and 123.17 pg/mL) compared with control animals (413.5 and 670.2 pg/mL). The level of IL-10 also was significantly higher in milk of healthy cows than in infected cows (39.78 and 22.5 pg/mL); however, differences in serum levels of this cytokine between tested groups were significantly less important (220.6 and 175.1 pg/mL).

The degree of differentiation of mast cell tumours (MCTs) is the most important feature and reflects the morphological characteristics and metastatic potential of the tumour and its likely response to treatment and the prognosis. The aim of this study was to epidemiologically analyse the risk of MCT development in dogs according to breed, age, sex, size and anatomical location of the tumour using the Kiupel grading system. The analysis involved 492 dogs selected based on a histopathological assessment of 2763 canine skin tumours. A logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals. Mast cell tumours accounted for 17.8% of all diagnosed canine skin tumours. The highest risk of high-grade MCTs was noted in the Shar-Pei (OR 28.18, P < 0.001) and Weimaraner (OR 6.45, P = 0.023). The highest risk of low-grade MCTs was determined in the Boxer (OR 6.72, P < 0.001), and Pug (OR 6.13, P = 0.027). The scrotum (OR 31.72, P < 0.001), inguinal area (OR 17.69, P < 0.001) and axilla (OR 6.30, P < 0.001) had the highest risk of high-grade MCTs. The risk of high-grade MCTs increased with age and peaked in the oldest dogs, aged 11–16 years (OR 9.55, P < 0.001). A higher risk of low-grade tumours was noted in younger dogs (aged 4–6 years) (OR 8.54, P < 0.001) and females (OR 1.43, P = 0.001). Statistical analysis further revealed a higher risk of both low (OR 3.47, P < 0.001) and high-grade MCTs (OR 1.71, P = 0.006) in medium-sized dogs. This study demonstrated relationships between Kiupel grading system and phenotypic traits, age and location of canine MCTs confirming the complex biological nature of this tumour.
