Globalisation and hyperconnectivity affect organisational resilience with threats such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic or large-scale cyberattacks. To strengthen organisational resilience capabilities, a framework such as enterprise risk management (ERM) is necessary so as to enable holistic risk management. Specifically, in this paper, we analyse the role of security, which has great potential in crisis management and makes it possible to follow up businesses integrated in enterprise security risk management (ESRM). This paper examines, for the first time in the literature, the output of scientists on ESRM. After analysing 463 articles from the period between 1986 and 2019, it is concluded that Security Risk Management is a subject area on its own and is closely linked to ERM.

The sharing economy has been presented as a potential contributor to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) due to the change it brings to consumption patterns. Although this potential has been identified in different papers, there is not, as far as we know, a single article that explains in detail all the possible platforms through which the sharing economy can contribute to the achievement of the SDGs. This paper addresses this topic by reviewing the existing literature involving the sharing economy and the SDGs, and by analyzing the main characteristics attributed to this business model, and how each one of them may in theory contribute to the SDGs. Our paper advances the field by establishing hitherto undiscovered relationships between the two concepts, while laying the foundations for corroborating our theoretical findings in future analytical studies.

The sharing economy is changing the way customers perceive businesses and making traditional companies face new challenges. Many outmoded companies have decided to embrace these changes either by creating their own sharing platforms or by acquiring an already existing one. This paper is an initial attempt to shed light on the reasons behind mergers and acquisitions involving at least one sharing platform. We conduct an in-depth analysis of M&As over the period 2012–2019 with a sample of 108 operations, covering countries all around the world. Our analysis reveals how important and commonplace these operations are becoming, and how widely spread sharing platforms are. The paper also shows how traditional companies are dealing with these new competitors and how sharing companies need the specific knowledge provided by established companies with outmoded approaches.

This paper is an initial attempt to use a bibliometric approach for an exhaustive literature review of corporate diversification in order to propose a new comprehensive framework for its study. We conduct an in-depth analysis of the historical evolution of research over the period 1970–2017 in six eight-year stages, shedding light on the main issues in each stage and the links among them using a sample of 1,253 articles. Attention is also paid to the three disciplines in this research stream: Strategic Management, Economics, and Finance. Our analysis reveals how the research on corporate diversification has extended the range of topics addressed and added new theoretical approaches and methodological tools, thereby ensuring greater maturity in its development. Emergent and prevailing research streams are identified, as they are expected to play a key role in the near future. We conclude by recognizing the need for an integrated theory on corporate diversification.

This study explores both the individual impact of geographical diversification and its effect combined with product diversification on small and medium-sized enterprises’ (SMEs) performance. Unlike most prior studies, this study distinguishes between related and unrelated product diversification. The research setting is a sample of manufacturing SMEs (1994–2014). By using dynamic panel data models, the results provide statistical support for the existence of a horizontal S-shaped relationship between geographical diversification and performance. The findings also indicate that while related product diversification positively enhances the performance of those SMEs engaged in geographical diversification (albeit not indefinitely), unrelated product diversification may significantly impair it, especially for SMEs opting for low and high levels of international diversification. Our study reveals that product and international diversification strategies in the case of SMEs are complementary or substitutive strategies depending on the specific type of product diversification strategy and the level of geographical diversification adopted. This study examines the individual effects of product diversification on performance and the moderating effects of international diversification on the product diversification–performance link in the context of a boom and bust cycle. Most prior research on firm strategies largely neglect the business cycle. We use data on a large sample of Spanish manufacturing firms from 1994 to 2014. In this period, the Spanish economy experienced a boom period (1994–2008) and a bust period involving a severe economic crisis (2009–2014). Our study highlights the important role of each stage of the economic cycle. Specifically, with respect to product diversification, our findings show that in a boom, moderate diversifiers obtain better profitability levels than their highly diverse or limited diversification counterparts do. In contrast, during an economic downturn, moderate and high diversifiers can be equally effective up to some point of optimization. Our findings also reveal a negative and significant effect of internationalization on profitability, independent of the stage of the economic cycle. Product and international diversification are complementary strategies during a period of economic growth when firms opt for moderate levels of product diversification. Meanwhile, when firms choose high levels of product diversification, both types of strategies are complementary during the boom cycle, but substitutive during the bust cycle.

This study provides new insights into the link between international diversification and firm performance in a sample of large manufacturing firms and SMEs based in Spain for the 1994–2008 period. Specifically, the focus is on how the nature and shape of this relationship may vary over time with firm size. The results show the existence of a horizontal-S curve when the whole sample of firms is considered in the empirical analysis. However, major differences are found between SMEs and large firms, and even within the actual group of SMEs. Strong support is found in large firms for the existence of a horizontal-S curve. Within the group of SMEs, there are small firms with a linear and negative relationship, whereas medium-sized firms record a U-shaped form. These findings suggest that as the international diversification-performance link is size-dependent, future research should explicitly consider firm size in order to better understand the nature of this relationship.

Firms learn from their previous experience and develop capabilities by transforming routines into knowledge. This mechanism applies to the market- but also the non-market environment. Experience is therefore useful to deal with the policy risk derived from the potential discretional and opportunistic behavior of governments and authorities. However, we argue that firms can learn not only from the intensity of experience dealing with policy risk, but also from the exposure to a more diverse range of political environments. Testing a sample of 164 Spanish multinational firms, we find that the positive impact of diversity of experiences on the scope of internationalization is more important than the intensity of experience. However, we also find a moderating impact between both types of experience. Overall, our findings emphasize the multi-faceted nature of experience and the need to disentangle the impact and interrelationships of its different components.

This study sheds additional light on the product diversification‐performance relationship for firms in a country having recently attained an advanced economy status in our period of analysis. We assume there will be an inverted U‐shaped relationship and use a sample of small, medium, and large Spanish manufacturing firms between 1994 and 2008. Our findings provide solid support for this assumption, and are identical when the sample consists of small, medium, and large firms and of large firms alone. Our results also suggest that the larger the firm, the higher the optimal level of diversification. Panel data models are used to control for unobservable heterogeneity and potential endogeneity problems. Copyright © 2015 ASAC. Published by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This paper seeks to investigate the bilateral impact of two components of global diversification: political risk and product diversification relatedness. By analyzing a sample of 119 Spanish firms we find empirical evidence that having experience in risky environments is a useful resource for multinational enterprises. The results obtained show that experience managing high levels of political risk in the foreign direct investment (FDI) portfolio increases the number of countries where the firm may potentially invest. This multinational flexibility encourages a higher degree of product diversification relatedness by facilitating the achievement of economies of scope in the activities carried out in foreign markets. By contrast, the degree of relatedness in product diversification did not show any significant impact on political risk, due to the existence of instruments available to cover or minimize this risk when investing abroad.

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to gain new insight on the determinants of economic growth. More precisely, it disentangles the contribution of an increase in the stock of ideas that exceeds the rate of growth in the steady state and the growth inherent to the steady state. Design/methodology/approach – Following Romer (1990) and Jones (2000, 2002) this paper uses an aggregate production function. The paper also models the evolution of the stock of ideas following the generalisation of Jones (1995). The analysis decomposes growth utilising the estimated parameters inherent to the ideas function. Findings – This article presents a growth accounting exercise that estimates total factor productivity for three Southern European economies. Systematic comparison of the countries illustrates the importance of innovation for economic growth. This exercise shows the main growth patterns over the last 50 years, and highlights the principal determinants by specifying an ideas function. Originality/value – This study yields recent timeframe for explaining per capita income variations within economies and observed differences across economies.

European Higher Education Area is prompting a change in the teaching model towards the consideration of students as the main actors in the educational process. In this context, this work presents concept mapping as a useful teaching tool for promoting the development of generic and specific skills in students while also constituting a firm commitment to independent study. The technique is certainly very useful for understanding and framing strategies, theories and concepts and provides visualisation of typical connections between different concepts, interrelations among strategies, analysis of the consequences of business decision-making and so on among others. Concept mapping was used by 355 students on the Principles of Business Organisation course in the second year of the Industrial Technologies Engineering degree course. As a general outcome of the study, marks in the subject show considerable improvement in all the groups.

Diversification as a strategic response to global opportunities has become increasingly important for firms. Drawing on the Resource Based View of the Firm, this paper investigates these strategies by analysing a circular relationship between product and geographical diversification. The results, obtained from a sample of leading Spanish multinational firms, suggest that adaptation to a wide range of different countries hinders the necessary coordination of activities that related product diversification requires and vice-versa. In contrast, unrelated diversification strategies can provide financial synergies, experience and flexibility, which help the process of internationalisation. Simultaneously, greater geographical diversification allows each subsidiary to behave as an independent unit and to develop more efficient internal control systems and resource allocation.

Online social networks (OSNs) have gained enormous popularity in recent years. The emergence of OSNs has had a significant social impact and has profoundly changed daily life. People use the Internet as a social medium to interact with one another and expand their social circles, to share information and experiences and to organise communities and activities. Internet users are playing an increasingly important role, as they not only interact with each other, but also make their communication visible to thousands of millions of people. Currently, they have the power to influence consumption behaviour through their recommendations. Companies have realised this and begun to use OSNs to announce their products and/or services to the markets. Thus, many businesses strive to invest in OSNs to create values for themselves. This work studies the specific case of the company QDQ Media which offers its customers (SMEs) positioning in OSNs to help them grow or to soften the effects of the drop in consumption due to the current economic crisis.

Achieving a balance between the development of information and communication technologies (ICT) development and teaching competences has become essential. The rapid evolution of the Web has presented universities with the challenge of preparing today’s academic staff for the ICT of the future. The European Higher Education Area has adapted to ICT, proposing a conceptual and methodological change in teaching–learning processes in Spanish universities. In this new scenario, the education of students via the Web has become a key factor that requires higher education teachers to have new emotional competences. Although affections, feelings and emotions have been gaining relevance in society and scientific thought for more than a decade now, in the future, we will be dealing with a sensory emotive Web (Web 5.0) and, more than ever before, there will be a deep need for teachers to use and promote intra- and interpersonal emotional competences. In this respect, this paper suggests that the use of rationalistic methodology alone, in this era of sensory and emotional knowledge (present and future), is a mistake. Teaching staff need to develop emotional competences and transmit them to their students, in order to produce graduates who will be more adaptable to new socio-professional contexts.

Since its conception Open Innovation has become what can be called the reference mark for business innovation management. The aim of this chapter is threefold; first the authors explain the trends that have emerged from the use of web based open innovation by firms. Secondly, they will establish a relationship between these trends and the phases of the New Product Development (NPD) process. Thirdly, they will carry out a concrete qualitative analysis based on active intermediaries firms. The authors compare different case study of companies that offer themselves as intermediaries in the web for open innovation practices oriented to the product.
