METIS is the EU flagship 5G project with the objective of laying the foundation for 5G systems and building consensus prior to standardization. The METIS overall approach toward 5G builds on the evolution of existing technologies complemented by new radio concepts that are designed to meet the new and challenging requirements of use cases today's radio access networks cannot support. The integration of these new radio concepts, such as massive MIMO, ultra dense networks, moving networks, and device-to-device, ultra reliable, and massive machine communications, will allow 5G to support the expected increase in mobile data volume while broadening the range of application domains that mobile communications can support beyond 2020. In this article, we describe the scenarios identified for the purpose of driving the 5G research direction. Furthermore, we give initial directions for the technology components (e.g., link level components, multinode/multiantenna, multi-RAT, and multi-layer networks and spectrum handling) that will allow the fulfillment of the requirements of the identified 5G scenarios.

Next-generation cellular technologies, commonly referred to as the sixth generation (6G), are envisioned to support a higher system capacity, better performance, and network sensing capabilities. The terahertz (THz) band is one potential enabler to this end due to the large unused frequency bands and the high spatial resolution enabled by the short signal wavelength and large bandwidth. Different from earlier surveys, this paper presents a comprehensive treatment and technology survey on THz communications and sensing in terms of advantages, applications, propagation characterization, channel modeling, measurement campaigns, antennas, transceiver devices, beamforming, networking, the integration of communications and sensing, and experimental testbeds. Starting from the motivation and use cases, we survey the development and historical perspective of THz communications and sensing with the anticipated 6G requirements. We explore the radio propagation, channel modeling, and measurement for the THz band. The transceiver requirements, architectures, technological challenges, and state-of-the-art approaches to compensate for the high propagation losses, including appropriate antenna design and beamforming solutions. We overview several related technologies that either are required by or are beneficial for THz systems and networks. The synergistic design of sensing and communications is explored in depth. Practical trials, demonstrations, and experiments are also summarized. The paper gives a holistic view of the current state of the art and highlights the open research challenges towards 6G and beyond.

While 5G is being deployed and the economy and society begin to reap the associated benefits, the research and development community starts to focus on the next, 6 th Generation (6G) of wireless communications. Although there are papers available in the literature on visions, requirements and technical enablers for 6G from various academic perspectives, there is a lack of joint industry and academic work towards 6G. In this paper a consolidated view on vision, values, use cases and key enabling technologies from leading industry stakeholders and academia is presented. The authors represent the mobile communications ecosystem with competences spanning hardware, link layer and networking aspects, as well as standardization and regulation. The second contribution of the paper is revisiting and analyzing the key concurrent initiatives on 6G. A third contribution of the paper is the identification and justification of six key 6G research challenges: (i) “connecting”, in the sense of empowering, exploiting and governing, intelligence; (ii) realizing a network of networks, i.e., leveraging on existing networks and investments, while reinventing roles and protocols where needed; (iii) delivering extreme experiences, when/where needed; (iv) (environmental, economic, social) sustainability to address the major challenges of current societies; (v) trustworthiness as an ingrained fundamental design principle; (vi) supporting cost-effective global service coverage. A fourth contribution is a comprehensive specification of a concrete first-set of industry and academia jointly defined use cases for 6G, e.g., massive twinning, cooperative robots, immersive telepresence, and others. Finally, the anticipated evolutions in the radio, network and management/orchestration domains are discussed.

The global roll-out phase of the fifth-generation of mobile communication systems is currently underway. The industry and academia have already begun research on potential sixth-generation (6G) communication systems. The 6G communication system is anticipated to provide network connectivity for an extensive range of use cases in a variety of emerging vertical industries. Consequently, a new set of challenging requirements and more stringent key performance indicators have to be considered, a novel architecture has to be designed, and unique enabling technologies shall be developed in order to fulfill the technical, regulatory, and business demands of the communication service customers. These requirements place enormous pressure on the players in the telecommunications industry, including network operators, service providers, hardware suppliers, standards development organizations (SDOs), and regulatory authorities aimed at developing, standardizing, and regulating an energy-efficient, cost-effective, performing, and sustainable 6G communication ecosystem. One area of focus for 6G communication systems is the digital twin (DT) technology, which is a well-defined set of tools designed to create virtual representations of physical objects that serve as their digital counterparts. This article explores the applicability of the DT technology in the context of 6G communication systems by viewing it as a promising tool to make research, development, operation, and optimization of the next-generation communication systems highly efficient. The major contribution of this article is fivefold. Firstly, we provide critical analysis of the state-of-the-art literature in the field of DT technology in order to capture its essence in several application areas since its inception. Secondly, we conduct a comprehensive survey of the research concerning the deployment of DT technology in 6G communication systems. Thirdly, we discuss potential use cases and key areas of applications (along with detailed examples) of 6G communication systems that can benefit from DT technology. Fourthly, we present an overview of the activities of several SDOs that are active in the field of DT technology. Finally, we identify several open research challenges and future directions that need to be addressed before the end-to-end deployment of DT technology in 6G communication systems.

In 2020, mobile and wireless traffic volume is expected to increase thousand-fold over 2010 figures. Moreover, an increase in the number of wirelessly-connected devices to counts in the tens of billions will have a profound impact on society. Massive machine communication, forming the basis for the Internet of Things, will make our everyday life more efficient, comfortable and safer, through a wide range of applications including traffic safety and medical services. The variety of applications and data traffic types will be significantly larger than today, and will result in more diverse requirements on services, devices and networks. METIS is set up by leading global players to prepare the migration towards tomorrow's multi-purpose global communication infrastructure, serving humans and things. The main objective of METIS is to lay the foundation for this future global mobile and wireless communications system, and to generate a global consensus here. In particular, METIS will provide new solutions which fit the needs beyond 2020.

The definition of the fundamental concepts and the design of the architectural framework for network slicing in fifth-generation communication systems have been successfully concluded; the standardization activities are almost over; and the commercial deployment has already commenced worldwide. To compete for digital supremacy and to be seen as front-runners in the international technological race, researchers from various regions and countries have begun exploring the technical requirements, envisioning potential applications, identifying innovative enablers, developing testbeds for the preliminary validation of several terrestrial and non-terrestrial technologies, and conceptualizing the architectural design for the next generation of mobile communication systems -the sixth-generation (6G) -aiming to connect the human, physical, and digital worlds with a high level of intelligence and openness for the 2030s. In support of such an ambitious vision, this article extends the end-to-end network slicing concepts, methods, solutions, and functioning architectures towards 6G. To this intent, the study first presents several decisive motivating trends behind such an extension of network slicing in order to make forthcoming mobile networks fully slicing-aware. Following that, the paper attempts to highlight the intelligentization of a number of key enabling technologies that will bring a renaissance to network slicing in the next decade. It then proposes a unified architectural framework and its principal building blocks in several layers, paving the way for the implementation of an open and intelligent network and network slicing in 6G. The proposed architectural solution harmonizes the most recent specifications of the relevant de jure and de facto standards development organizations in their applicable layers with the aim of architecting a pre-standard-compliant and preliminary framework for slicing the 6G network. Finally, the article is intended to spur interest and lay the groundwork for further investigations and subsequent research and development by highlighting a number of open research challenges and directions in this flourishing field.
