Students who leave school early is an issue of global concern, and various measures have been taken to help early leavers return to school, including second chance education programmes. This qualitative case study explores their reasons for continuing education in a second chance education programme in a successful educational centre located in Ceuta, a unique Spanish city. Our findings indicate that there is a complex interplay of educational, family and economical aspects pushing and pulling the participants to resume education, but that their beliefs on these factors and their agency are key in this process. These findings can contribute to prevent disengagement and leaving from education and training in the future by informing the measures for educational reintegration.

The study explores the motives that, according to the students themselves, have led them in the past to a trajectory that culminated in early school leaving. Based on this general objective, the study carried out has an exploratory and heuristic nature and adopted a qualitative methodology in order to obtain knowledge linked to the experience, meaning and context of the protagonist subjects. To do this, and within the framework of a single case study, we have used semi-structured interviews in depth with the young students belonging to the Escuela de la Construccion in Ceuta, which offers training itineraries for the socio-labor insertion of people in situation or risk of social exclusion. This procedure has allowed us to collect information about the trajectory of the students until they were admitted to the center. The stories were subjected to narrative analysis and the results adopted the biogram format, using categories referring to vital stages and scope that allow for the accommodation of the singularities associated with each personal situation. The findings suggest that the resumption of the formative trajectory depends not only on training itself but also on the previous trajectory of the subjects. Reasons pushing students to abandon their education come both from the education centers and from outside them and that both types of reasons will also have an impact on the subsequent decision to resume their training.

The integration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in educational centers has become an imperative need to prepare new generations with the necessary competencies to respond to new global challenges. Schools, as educators, have a responsibility to foster education that promotes sustainable development, ensuring that new generations adopt practices and values that contribute to building a more equitable and sustainable future. The goal of this article is to provide an overview of the actions and experiences related to the SDGs that are being carried out at schools in the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia (Spain). A purposive sampling was carried out, and the sample consisted of 40 educational centers. The centers were selected based, firstly, on their consideration as key agents in the development of the SDGs and, secondly, on their territorial representativeness. A descriptive qualitative research approach was adopted, using a semi-structured in-depth interview, with teachers and members of the management teams, as an instrument to collect 163 information. A content analysis based on grounded theory was conducted, which made it possible to identify the agents promoting actions and programs linked to the SDGs, as well as to categorize by theme the different actions being developed by the centers to contribute to the development of the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda.
