The interest for novel chalcone-based materials in nonlinear optics is dependent on strong second harmonic generation in organic systems. Chalcones are α,β-unsaturated ketones that can be easily obtained by Claisen–Schmidt condensation between ketones and aromatic aldehydes. A new 2-amino-chalcone was synthesized and its crystal molecular structure was elucidated using the single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. This compound, C15H12BrNO2, crystallizes in monoclinic centrosymmetric space group C2/c with cell parameters a = 29.47(7) Å; b = 6.97(5) Å, c = 13.59(1) Å, β = 112.52(6)° and V = 2581.2(2) Å3. In addition to the crystal structure, the analysis of Hirshfeld surfaces indicates the presence of hydrogen bonds of types N–H⋯O and O–H⋯O that stabilize two independent centrosymmetric dimers, and also indicates the presence of π–π stacking interactions that stabilize a supramolecular trimeric system. Being a push–pull chromophore we investigated the NLO properties of the 2-amino-chalcone asymmetric unit using the supermolecule approach in combination with an iterative electrostatic polarization scheme. The calculations were performed using the CAM-B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level of theory for both dynamic and static situations. In the presence of the embedding charges, the γ value is increased by 20% for the dynamic calculation but only 8% for the static limit. In contrast to the crystal form, when in solution the 2-amino-chalcone lacks an inversion center so that second order NLO properties do not vanish. Following this idea we computed the NLO properties using the implicit solvation approach IEF-PCM. The solvent effect on the NLO properties was to augment its values as the solvent polarity increases. We obtained for the in-crystal and in DMSO 2-amino-chalcone, γ(−2ω;ω,ω,0) = 144.12 × 10−36 esu and 260.163 × 10−36 esu, respectively, and therefore interesting materials for third order NLO applications.

In this study, a combined experimental and theoretical study of the nonlinear optical properties (NLO) of two chalcone derivatives, (E)-3-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1-(2-(phenylsulfonylamine)phenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (MPSP) and (E)-3-(3-nitrophenyl)-1-(2-(phenylsulfonylamine)phenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (NPSP), in DMSO is reported. The single crystal structures of the compounds, which differ only by the type and position of one substituent, were grown using the slow evaporation technique, and the main structural differences are discussed. The two-photon absorption and first-order hyperpolarizability measurements were performed via the Z-scan technique and hyper-Rayleigh scattering experiment in DMSO. The theoretical calculations were performed using the Density Functional Theory (DFT) at the CAM-B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level, and the sum-over-states (SOS) approach in both static and dynamic cases. Besides the electron conjugation achieved by the aromatic rings, olefins, and carbonyl groups, both compounds have a nearly flat chalcone backbone, which is believed to contribute to the nonlinear optical properties. MPSP and NPSP have different positions, even though they have roughly the same conformation and form C–H⋯O interactions. For several studied frequencies, the HRS first hyperpolarizability values for MPSP are greater than those for NPSP, indicating that in most cases the NLO properties of MPSP are better. The comparison among the theoretical and experimental HRS first hyperpolarizability results showed a good agreement. In addition, the two-dimensional second order nonlinear optical spectra obtained from the sum-over-states model indicate good second-order NLO responses of the two chalcone derivatives under external fields. Our findings are important not only to show the potential nonlinear optical application of the two new compounds but also to gain an insight into how different chemical compositions might affect the crystal structures and physico-chemical properties.
The genus Justicia has more than 600 species distributed in both hemispheres, in the tropics and temperate regions, and it is used in the treatment of numerous pathologies. This study presents a review of the biological activities of plant extracts and isolated chemical constituents of Justicia (ACANTHACEAE), identified in the period from May 2011 to August 2022. We analyzed over 176 articles with various biological activities and chemical compound descriptions present in the 29 species of Justicia. These have a variety of applications, such as antioxidant and antimicrobial, with alkaloids and flavonoids (e.g., naringenin) the most frequently identified secondary metabolites. The most observed species were Justicia gendarussa Burm., Justicia procumbens L., Justicia adhatoda L., Justicia spicigera Schltdl, and Justicia pectoralis Jacq. The frontier molecular orbitals carried out using density functional theory (M062X and basis set 6-311++G(d,p) indicate reactive sites for naringenin compound and a chemical reaction on phytomedicine activity. The energy gap (206.99 kcal/mol) and dimer solid state packing point to chemical stability. Due to the wide variety of pharmacological uses of these species, this review points toward the development of new phytomedicines.
