The density of a chicken population has a great influence on the health and growth of the chickens. For free-range chicken producers, an appropriate population density can increase their economic benefit and be utilized for estimating the economic value of the flock. However, it is very difficult to calculate the density of chickens quickly and accurately because of the complicated environmental background and the dynamic number of chickens. Therefore, we propose an automated method for quickly and accurately counting the number of chickens on a chicken farm, rather than doing so manually. The contributions of this paper are twofold: (1) we innovatively designed a full convolutional network—DenseFCN—and counted the chickens in an image using the method of point supervision, which achieved an accuracy of 93.84% and 9.27 frames per second (FPS); (2) the point supervision method was used to detect the density of chickens. Compared with the current mainstream object detection method, the higher effectiveness of this method was proven. From the performance evaluation of the algorithm, the proposed method is practical for measuring the density statistics of chickens in a farm environment and provides a new feasible tool for the density estimation of farm poultry breeding.
The gender ratio of free-range chickens is considered as a major animal welfare problem in commercial broiler farming. Free-range chicken producers need to identify chicken gender to estimate the economic value of their flock. However, it is challenging for farmers to estimate the gender ratio of chickens efficiently and accurately, since the environmental background is complicated and the chicken number is dynamic. Moreover, manual estimation is likely double counts or missed count and thus is inaccurate and time consuming. Hence, automated methods that can lead to results efficiently and accurately replace the identification abilities of a chicken gender expert, working in a farm environment, are beneficial to the industry. The contributions in this paper include: (1) Building the world’s first chicken gender classification database annotated manually, which comprises 800 chicken flock images captured on a farm and 1000 single chicken images separated from the flock images by an object detection network, labelled with gender information. (2) Training a rooster and hen classifier using a deep neural network and cross entropy in information theory to achieve an average accuracy of 96.85%. The evaluation of the algorithm performance indicates that the proposed automated method is practical for the gender classification of chickens on the farm environment and provides a feasible way of thinking for the estimation of the gender ratio.
Excellent performance has been demonstrated in implementing challenging agricultural production processes using modern information technology, especially in the use of artificial intelligence methods to improve modern production environments. However, most of the existing work uses visual methods to train models that extract image features of organisms to analyze their behavior, and it may not be truly intelligent. Because vocal animals transmit information through grunts, the information obtained directly from the grunts of pigs is more useful to understand their behavior and emotional state, which is important for monitoring and predicting the health conditions and abnormal behavior of pigs. We propose a sound classification model called TransformerCNN, which combines the advantages of CNN spatial feature representation and the Transformer sequence coding to form a powerful global feature perception and local feature extraction capability. Through detailed qualitative and quantitative evaluations and by comparing state-of-the-art traditional animal sound recognition methods with deep learning methods, we demonstrate the advantages of our approach for classifying domestic pig sounds. The scores for domestic pig sound recognition accuracy, AUC and recall were 96.05%, 98.37% and 90.52%, respectively, all higher than the comparison model. In addition, it has good robustness and generalization capability with low variation in performance for different input features.
Multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for plant protection are widely used in China’s agricultural production. However, spray droplets often drift and distribute nonuniformly, thereby harming its utilization and the environment. A variable spray system is designed, discussed, and verified to solve this problem. The distribution characteristics of droplet deposition under different spray states (flight state, environment state, nozzle state) are obtained through computational fluid dynamics simulation. In the verification experiment, the wind velocity error of most sample points is less than 1 m/s, and the deposition ratio error is less than 10%, indicating that the simulation is reliable. A simulation data set is used to train support vector regression and back propagation neural network with multiple parameters. An optimal regression model with the root mean square error of 6.5% is selected. The UAV offset and nozzle flow of the variable spray system can be obtained in accordance with the current spray state by multi-sensor fusion and the predicted deposition distribution characteristics. The farmland experiment shows that the deposition volume error between the prediction and experiment is within 30%, thereby proving the effectiveness of the system. This article provides a reference for the improvement of UAV intelligent spray system.
Phenotypic analysis has always played an important role in breeding research. At present, wheat phenotypic analysis research mostly relies on high-precision instruments, which make the cost higher. Thanks to the development of 3D reconstruction technology, the reconstructed wheat 3D model can also be used for phenotypic analysis. In this paper, a method is proposed to reconstruct wheat 3D model based on semantic information. The method can generate the corresponding 3D point cloud model of wheat according to the semantic description. First, an object detection algorithm is used to detect the characteristics of some wheat phenotypes during the growth process. Second, the growth environment information and some phenotypic features of wheat are combined into semantic information. Third, text-to-image algorithm is used to generate the 2D image of wheat. Finally, the wheat in the 2D image is transformed into an abstract 3D point cloud and obtained a higher precision point cloud model using a deep learning algorithm. Extensive experiments indicate that the method reconstructs 3D models and has a heuristic effect on phenotypic analysis and breeding research by deep learning.
Background: Pneumonia is considered one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. Bacterial and viral pneumonia share many similar clinical features, thus making diagnosis a challenging task. Traditional diagnostic method developments mainly rely on radiological imaging and require a certain degree of consulting clinical experience, which can be inefficient and inconsistent. Deep learning for the classification of pneumonia in multiple modalities, especially integrating multiple data, has not been well explored. Methods: The study introduce the PneumoFusion-Net, a deep learning-based multimodal framework that incorporates CT images, clinical text, numerical lab test results, and radiology reports for improved diagnosis. In the experiments, a dataset of 10,095 pneumonia CT images was used-including associated clinical data-most of which was used for training and validation while keeping part of it for validation on a held-out test set. Five-fold cross-validation was considered in order to evaluate this model, calculating different metrics including accuracy and F1-Score.Results: PneumoFusion-Net, which achieved 98.96% classification accuracy with a 98% F1-score on the held-out test set, is highly effective in distinguishing bacterial from viral types of pneumonia. This has been highly beneficial for diagnosis, reducing misdiagnosis and further improving homogeneity across various data sets from multiple patients. Conclusion: PneumoFusion-Net offers an effective and efficient approach to pneumonia classification by integrating diverse data sources, resulting in high diagnostic accuracy. Its potential for clinical integration could significantly reduce the burden of pneumonia diagnosis by providing radiologists and clinicians with a robust, automated diagnostic tool.
