The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the world in different ways. Not only are people’s lives and livelihoods affected, but the virus has also affected people’s lifestyles. In the research sector, there have been significant changes, and new research is coming very strongly in the related fields of virology and epidemiology. Similar trends were observed after the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) episodes of 2003 and 2012, respectively. Analyzing 20 years of published scientific papers, this article points out the highlights of coronavirus-related research. Significant progress is observed in the past research related to virology, epidemiology, infectious diseases among others. However, in research linked to public health, its governance, technology, and risk communication there seem to be gap areas. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) global research road map has identified social science-related research as a priority area, more focus needs to be given in the upcoming days for multi, cross and trans-disciplinary research related to public health and disaster risk reduction.

Bibliometric analysis based on the Science Citation Index Expanded published by Thomson Scientific was carried out to identify the research status and future trends of remote sensing (RS) during 2010–2015. The analysis revealed the institutional, national, spatio-temporal, and categorical patterns in remote sensing research both from the WP (whole publications) viewpoint and the HCP (highly-cited publications) viewpoint. Statistical analysis results showed that remote sensing research almost doubled during 2010–2015. Environmental sciences comprised the most attractive subject category among remote sensing research. The International Journal of Remote Sensing was the most productive journal, and Remote Sensing of Environment published the most HCP among the 31 distributed journals. The productive ranking of countries was led by the U.S. both from the WP viewpoint and the HCP viewpoint, and CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) was the most productive institute both from the WP viewpoint and the HCP viewpoint with lower CPP (average number of citations per paper). Keyword analysis illustrated that model and algorithm research were the key points in RS during 2010–2015. RS data including Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Landsat, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and LiDAR (light detection and ranging) were the most frequently adopted, but the data usage of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) and small satellites will be promoted in the future. With the development of data acquisition abilities, big data issues will become the challenges and hotspots of RS research, and new algorithms will continue to emerge.

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is an international non-profit standards organization. Established in 1994, OGC aims to make geospatial information and services FAIR-Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. OGC specifications have greatly facilitated interoperability among software, hardware, data, and users in the GIS field. This study collected publications related to OGC specifications from the Web of Science (WoS database) between 1994 to 2020 and conducted a literature analysis using Derwent Data Analyzer and VosViewer, finding that OGC specifications have been widely applied in academic fields. The most productive organizations were Wuhan University and George Mason University; the most common keywords were interoperability, data, and web service. Since 2018, the emerging keywords that have attracted much attention from researchers were 3D city models, 3D modeling, and smart cities. To make geospatial data FAIR, the OGC specifications SWE and WMS served more for “Findable”, SWE contributed more to “Accessible”, WPS and WCS served more for “Interoperable”, and WPS, XML schemas, WFS, and WMS served more for “Reusable”. The OGC specification also serves data and web services for large-scale infrastructure such as the Digital Earth Platform of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) satellite, operational from its launch in 2002 until October 2017, documented critical changes in global terrestrial water storage, significantly advancing the fields of gravity field analysis, hydrological variations, and environmental monitoring. This study investigates the thematic evolution of 2,966 SCIE-indexed publications on GRACE satellite applications from 2002 to 2022, utilizing co-occurrence network mapping and complex network analysis. Our results indicate a steady growth in GRACE satellite application research, with early publications (2002–2004) achieving an average citation rate exceeding 100, underscoring their substantial impact. Keyword clustering identified four primary research themes: Hydrology and Water Resources, Atmospheric and Environmental Science, Geophysical and Temporal Analysis, and Polar and Glaciological Studies. Over time, these themes have expanded and deepened, transitioning from initial focuses on gravity field computations to hydrological applications, sea level studies, and more specific investigations into water resources, climate change, and advancements in satellite geodesy. Recent research has particularly concentrated on groundwater and water storage issues. Geographically, the United States leads in publication output, impact, and international collaborations, with China following in publication count and network centrality, albeit with potential for improved impact. European countries demonstrate significant influence and centrality within the cooperation network. The evolution index of the international cooperation network shows a significant increase in connectivity from 2002 to 2022, with closer cooperation between countries. There is notable growth in both the number and intensity of collaborations, as evidenced by the rising average degree and average weighted degree. Overall, these indices underscore the evolution towards a more connected and globally integrated research network in GRACE satellite research. Looking forward, technological advancements, enhanced international collaboration, and integration with other data sources will drive future research in GRACE satellite application research, with important implications for addressing global environmental and climate challenges.

Carbon emission is the main cause of climate change, and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), is one of the main region of carbon emission in China. In order to study the carbon emission characteristics in the BTH region, this paper uses the Geostatistical method to analyze the dynamic evolution of the spatial variations of carbon emissions from 1997 to 2017. (1) The global Moran’s I analysis indicates that carbon emissions take on a spatial agglomeration effect in BTH region. The global Moran’s I show a decreasing trend from 1997 to 2012, indicating that there is gradually weakening pressure between cities. However, from 2012 to 2017, the global Moran’s I show an increasing trend, indicating that there is gradually strengthening pressure between cities. (2) The hotspot areas have remained largely unchanged except Beijing. Beijing has transitioned from a hotspot area to a non-hotspot area. (3) Standard deviational ellipse analysis showed that that the carbon emission distribution in the BTH region basically exhibits a northeastsouthwest distribution pattern and has a very small variation.
