Current research shows that SMEs’ social and environmental actions are fragmented and informal, and few have formal policies and intentions. At the same time, many SMEs are engaged with environmental policies, often not knowing it. Concurrently, there is a gap between the pro-environmental attitudes of the SMEs managers, who are often seen as the main drivers for the firm’s behavior, and the policies implemented in reality in their firms. To this end, our research’s objective is to explore pro-environmental behavior, both at the individual and firm level, to identify connections between these levels and measures but also with firm’s and managers’ demographics, based on a study of Romanian SMEs. The descriptive analysis and factor analysis including tetrachoric correlation methods were used to explore these behaviors and the associations between them. The results confirm the research’s hypothesis and show that there are positive connections between the “green” behaviors at the individual level and in the SME context. Moreover, comparative analysis provided evidence of differences in the adoption of environmental practices, which were based on the firm’s demographics and manager’s characteristics. Simultaneously, five typologies of pro-environmental behavior in SMEs were identified and described, depending on the additional investment necessary and allocated resources, on the changes in organizational structure, and on the manager’s personal involvement. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the environmental improvement policies in SMEs and may help policy-makers tailor interventions and SMEs managers learn from good practices of their peers.

Considering that international projects with teams in the virtual environment (IPTVEs) contribute to the reduction in the carbon footprint and, at the same time, become life-saving solutions in extreme global situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, organizations familiar with this type of project will have a substantial advantage in their ability to operate efficiently and to achieve their sustainable goals. An important aspect of project management is to identify the factors that influence the success of an international project, increasing its performance. Our first research hypothesis was that the decision to create a project team in the virtual environment is a factor with a major influence on international project success. Data collection was performed through an online survey conducted within international project team members and managers. The success factors were explained through factorial analysis which revealed two main factors and the neural network algorithm on a dataset through IBM SPSS Modeler software. The predictive model revealed that the most important field is setting up a virtual team, followed by organizational culture. These results support our hypothesis.

In the context of growing concerns regarding the deterioration of the environment and the increase in social inequalities, the concept of sustainability emerged as a response of companies, in order to contribute to community goodwill. The drivers and obstacles for the businesses engaging in sustainable policies have been explored at large by scientific literature. However, research gaps were observed, namely regarding SMEs, that tend to have a less formal and more fragmented approach to sustainability. The goal of our study is to determine the main barriers and facilitators for sustainability that Romanian SMEs face, and the connections between them and with the firms’ characteristics. Our study identifies the main barriers and facilitators for adopting sustainable practices in SMEs located in Romania, based on a study on a panel of 71 firms. The association rule method of data mining and quantitative statistic methods were used to explore barrier–facilitator relationships and how they vary depending on the firms’ or managers’ characteristics. The results show a wide range of drivers and obstacles for implementing sustainability in SMEs, while identifying connections between different barriers and facilitators and correlations with the firms’ characteristics. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of factors that impact sustainable behavior in SMEs and identify further aspects to be explored.

Crises are influencing the corporate sustainability. Long-term stakeholder value built in decades can be ruined by a middle scale crisis. In the new world of cyber-physical systems, scholars emphasize the decentralized, human–machine cooperation based disturbance handling. From information technology and communication (ICT) point of view the cyber-physical systems are ready for a sustainable, decentralized crisis management. The aim of the article is to present results of a research that has as objective to study the readiness of the human component of cyber-physical systems for a decentralized crisis management approach in industrial organizations. Two highly regulated industries—automotive and pharmaceutical industry- was selected; in all the studied organizations the continuous human-machine cooperation is a reality. The sample consisted of 151 respondents and a questionnaire-based survey was used. The study revealed the need for guidance and education for the personnel regarding the roles and competences of the different departments regarding the relationship with certain stakeholders. The study also reveals that apart from some explicitly regulated by law areas—fire safety, occupational health and safety, and some issues related to technological failures—the studied organizations are not prepared for unexpected situations. Also, our survey revealed that the members of the organization, others than top managers, are not prepared to handle ‘off the job-description’ situations.

Numerous studies have pointed out direct positive impacts of Information Communication Technology (ICT) on education quality. From just tool, ICT is being viewed in itself as quality or as catalyst for quality improvement. These findings have led universities worldwide to adopt ICT regardless of uncertainties. Consequently, not all of them succeeded. Proofs from cases around the world show that ICT produces positive impact only in the environment that fits. Such environment is fostered by an effective change management approach. The main aim of this paper is therefore to present the symbiotic relationship between ICT and change management, zeroing on how changes are managed to attain a proper ICT ecosystem for education quality improvement. It also aims to understand, through the conducts of extensive bibliographical research, along with critical content analyses, the roles of ICT in education, its design and impacts, and what constitutes effective change management approach for ICT inclusion. Key findings include: that the integration of ICT alone does not necessarily produce direct positive impact on teaching and learning, but its design; that a good design requires a proper change management process, driven by ICT, and that the involvement of all stakeholders, particularly functional managers, is critical to attain better performances.

Surfaces of bamboo derived cellulosic fibrous systems have been modified by air-plasma treatment. Their deformational response was studied to establish the relationship between their three-dimensional profile and permanent deformation as a measure of their comfort properties since the fibrous system made of natural polymer comes into contact with the skin. The composite should have a permanent deformation close to zero, in order to be, in terms of dimensions, as stable as possible. By analyzing the area of 1 cm2 using a Universal Surface Tester (UST), different 3D surface diagrams and surface roughness values were obtained. This type of surface investigation provides relevant information about the permanent deformation response of the studied surface, for comfort purposes. The deformation responses and roughness levels were studied (the roughness being the parameter quantifying the 3D geometry of the systems surface). The effect of air-plasma surface modification on the deformation response of bamboo derived cellulosic fibrous systems and optimization of their 3D surface structure to enhance comfort-related properties proved to be substantial. The surface modifications induced by air-plasma treatment are in a good correlation with the mechanical behavior. As expected, the roughness levels of samples studied using ball sensors are higher than those of specimens scanned using a papillary sensor. Knitted polymer fibrous matrix T1 shows a roughness level of 773 μm resulting from analyses using the ball sensor, while using the papillary sensor it was 102 μm, 86.8% less than before. The analysis of the dimensional stability of knitted polymer fibrous systems was performed by scanning with the papillary sensor, since it provides information comparable with human perception concerning the architecture of the sample surfaces.

The division of labor and the growing number of businesses have led to the situation where the superior is no longer able to make all decisions alone and therefore is required to delegate. Delegation has been around for a long time and has become critical to modern businesses. We must differentiate between delegating an assignment, in the sense of delegation work and delegating the responsibility. These aspects are often misunderstood or not differentiated at all. Employees should not only be delegated with the execution of tasks but also with the related power to act and decide. Managing through conventional authoritarian principles is no longer sustainable within the current economic trend. This paper aims to present the behavioral pattern of the wrongly-understood delegation of responsibility, instruments and fear of delegation and how this type of approach, which is currently implemented in so many organizations, is actually a misconceived delegation of responsibility.

Risk assessment is one the key activities of any project. The unexpected situations can have catastrophic consequences. Risk assessment tries to estimate to potential known unknowns, but there is no guarantee to foresee all circumstances around a project. In this situation the project team must be adaptive and find solutions by cooperation, creativity and abductive reasoning. In the paper we tried to analyse on what extent a project and a project team can be handled as a complex adaptive system. More precisely, how the scientific and practical achievements of the theory of complex adaptive systems (CAS) can be used in project management. More exactly, we analyse the applicability of the Holonic Multi-Agent Systems in risk management of the projects. We consider the way in which holons handle the unexpected situations can be a model in project management.

The new approaches of risk and crisis management of organizations point to corporate responsibility and corporate sustainability. In the ‘Internet of Everything’ era, when the new media and social networks create the possibility to ruin in a few seconds the reputation of a company built in decades, it is important to afford the maximum attention to risk management and crisis communication. Long-term sustainability requires a transparent, trustful communication in due time. In our study, we propose a crisis management model that leads to sustainable corporate behaviour. We consider organizations as complex systems, and we use the holonic multiagent modelling concept to depict the emergent behaviour of these systems. This theoretical paper has as its main result a crisis communication model, based on the adaptability feature of holons. In our non-linear approach for unpredictable situations we merged some findings of sustainability theory, corporate social responsibility (CSR) management, crisis communication, the holonic manufacturing concept and the latest security standards in computer communication.

The leadership style and the thereof oriented behavior pattern represents the basic attitude in which a person exercises its leadership tasks. There are a series of different leadership styles with numerous explanation attempts aiming to present a model for a successful leadership behavior. The worldwide trend leads in the direction of Management by Delegation with clear operating principles which is nowadays the central point of all general interests concerning this topic but a thorough documentation regarding the different leadership styles is the starting point for each manager when trying to build a good relation with the employees. A well-defined and applied leadership style will influence the working behavior of the employees and in turns lead to a better functioning of the whole organization. The knowledge-based organization needs to be up to date with both the oldest and the newest theories concerning leadership so it can create a working relationship with its employees. The present paper aims to present the main aspects concerning leadership, leadership styles and concepts in order to find the best way of creating a successful relationship between leadership and employees by strengthening the individual responsibility of each employee and hence improving the functioning of an organization.

Since the bamboo derived nanocellulosic fibrous systems (used as covers for mattresses), come in contact with skin, the study is aiming to establish the relationship between their three D-dimensional architecture and permanent deformation. The composite should have a permanent deformation near to zero, in order to be as stable as possible, in terms of dimensional. Different types of bamboo derived nanocellulosic fibrous systems, whose surfaces have been modified/engineered under several irradiation conditions, were used. By analyzing the area of 1 cm2 with UST (Universal Surface Tester), different 3D diagrams were achieved. This type of surface investigation provides relevant information about permanent deformation response of the studied surface, for comfort purposes. In other terms, the roughness which is the parameter quantifying the 3D geometry of the systems surface, a correlation between deformation response and the roughness level could be established. Moreover, since there is a direct contact of this polymeric supports with skin, the outcomes of this research can be regarded as a perspective/starting point for a novel study. The level of roughness can be monitored, in order to obtain matrices with different hydrophobicity, consequently with potential antimicrobial performance. The more hydrophilic the polymeric matrix will be, the more the antimicrobial response/behaviour can be achieved. Some implications in medicine are also considered, because one of the most applied methods to fight infection would be to apply loading onto bamboo derived cellulosic supports that has the capability to release antimicrobial substances.

Most current work activities in R&D centres are innovative and dynamic, with project management acting as the discipline that governs them. The improvement of PM methods has become a necessity due to the following main factors: classical methodologies are increasingly difficult to apply, cutbacks in project duration are requested by organisations and customers, demands for product quality are continuously expanding. The paper examines how PM concepts are used in developed R&D projects, based on the V-model approach. It also introduces an enhanced new approach called

Our study aims to provide a global picture of good sustainable practices and initiatives in the field of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). In order to outline the major positive practices worldwide, a document analysis was performed on international relevant documents (reports, academic studies, guides, rules and regulations, work papers). This method was complemented by discussions with local representatives of school administration, who provided specific evidence on curricular and extracurricular activities conducted locally. Our findings confirm that various sustainable initiatives in TVET took place at an international level, mostly involving multiple stakeholders in the public sector, private sector and civil society. However, it is difficult to assess the effectiveness of these initiatives due to the unequal cooperation of several countries in responding to the UNESCO questionnaires, and to the targets they address. Many of the initiatives outlined in our study appear to have a strong cultural and ethnical dimension. The organization of such examples of good practices according to the different types of learning systems (formal, non-formal and informal education) provides a large framework for different Education actors at international, national and local level, allowing them to inspire when making policies decisions to integrate Sustainable Development in Technical educational courses.

Coupled ZnO/SnO 2 nanocomposites were successfully prepared with different molar ratios (1/1-1/10) using a homogeneous co-precipitation method. The structural properties of the obtained oxides were evaluated using different techniques: N 2 sorption, Infrared spectroscopy, UVDR spectroscopy for solid compounds and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The photocatalytic activity of the samples was tested for the bleaching of eosin Y. The photocatalytic process occurs under the illumination of an UV lamp, emitting light at 254 nm. The influence of the wavelength and the ZnO:SnO 2 molar ratio over the photocatalytic efficiency was studied.

Silica nanoparticles repeatedly inhaled lead to acute and chronic lung inflammation and finally to pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer, people with chronic respiratory diseases like asthma or allergic rhinitis being even more susceptible to their toxic effects. In order to reduce these above-mentioned toxic effects, the aim of this study was to engineer the environmental silica nanoparticles with silver and subsequent thermal treatment. Nanometer-sized and spherical silica particles were synthesized in a homogeneous state, using a simple one-pot chemical method. An applicable approach resulted in silver particles forming over the surface of the silica. The outcome was materialized in extremely small silver particles attached to silica core particles. Playing their well-known decisive role, precursors and catalysts effectively controlled the size of silver and silica particles. The synchronized structure of the synthesized particles was revealed by the electrostatic repulsion among the silica spheres and the electrostatic attraction between silica spheres and silver particles. The morphological images are revealed by means of a scanning electron microscope. The formation of silver–silica composite particles was confirmed by using infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Following thermal analysis, the results concerning the thermal stability of the prepared particles provided higher temperature applications.
