This work aims to establish a relationship between volume and biomass with interferometric and radiometric SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) response from planted Eucalyptus saligna forest stands, using multi-variable regression techniques. X and P band SAR images from the airborne OrbiSAR-1 sensor, were acquired at the study area in the southeast region of Brazil. The interferometric height (Hint = difference between interferometric digital elevation model in X and P bands), contributed to the models developed due to fact that Eucalyptus forest is composed of individuals whose structure is predominantly cylindrical and vertically oriented, and whose tree heights have great correlation with volume and biomass. The volume model showed that the stand volume was highly correlated with the interferometric height logarithm (Log10Hint), since Eucalyptus tree volume has a linear relationship with the vegetation height. The biomass model showed that the combination of both Hint2 and Canopy Scattering Index—CSI (relation of s°VV by the sum of s°VV and s°HH, which represents to the canopy interaction) were used in this model, due to the fact that the Eucalyptus biomass and the trees height relationship is not linear. Both models showed a prediction error of around 10% to estimate the Eucalyptus biomass and volume, which represents a great potential to use this kind of technology to help establish Eucalyptus forest inventory for large areas.

The aim of this study is to understand the relationship between radar backscattering (σ°, β° and γ) of a multi-polarized Radarsat-2 C-band image with the structural attributes of regenerating mangrove vegetation located at the mouth of the Amazon River. CBH (circumference at breast height), height and species data were collected to characterize vegetation structure and above-ground biomass (AGB) at 17 plots with a total of 3090 measured individuals. Significant relationships between the linear σ° in VH (vertical transmit, horizontal receive) cross-polarization produced r2 values of 0.63 for the average height, 0.53 for the DBH, 0.46 for the basal area (BA) and 0.52 for the AGB. Using co-polarized HH (horizontal transmit, horizontal receive) and VV (vertical transmit, vertical receive), r2 values increased to 0.81, 0.79, 0.67 and 0.79, respectively. Vegetation attribute maps of average canopy height, DBH and AGB were generated for the study area. We conclude that multi-polarized Radarsat-2 images were adequate for characterization of vegetation attributes in areas of mangrove regeneration.

Brazilian Amazon Forest biomes are presently under intensive land cover conversion from natural vegetation to agriculture. Timely detection of recent deforestation through orbital remote sensing is a critical requirement for an operational land cover monitoring system in order to provide information to the regulatory systems and decision makers. Optical images present drawbacks for operation in the moist tropics and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are a real alternative. The feasibility of using multipolarized L‐band images simulating the Multi‐Application Purpose SAR (MAPSAR) satellite was examined for the detection of recent deforestation in the Tapajós region. The discrimination of recent deforestation from other land cover classes was evaluated through a quantitative analysis based on Jeffreys–Matusitas (JM) distances derived from training samples using amplitude values and supported by field survey. The investigation confirmed the possibility of the discrimination of recently deforested classes from other classes based on the L‐band images as proposed in the MAPSAR.

We demonstrate a new digital technique for change detection that integrates field survey data in a methodology. The field survey was specifically designed to control the operation of this new technique for change detection. The Radiometric Rotation Controlled by No‐change Axis (RCNA) technique was applied with spectral bands in the visible spectral range without atmospheric correction. The 190.37 km2 study area is located in the centre of the semi‐arid region of northeast Brazil. This region is occupied by a natural shrub vegetation and low arboreal type steppe. This is known locally as ‘caatinga’, and in this area the predominant use is grazing by cattle and goat. Two TM/Landsat images in digital format of the dry seasons of 1984 and 1996 were used together with two ETM+ /Landsat images for the dry seasons of 1999 and 2001. Three change maps were generated, all with accuracy index values of around 0.70, which is acceptable for areas with complex patterns like semi‐arid lands. In conclusion, there is no need to apply atmospheric correction methods to a pair of multi‐temporal images to obtain an acceptable accuracy of change detection in semi‐arid regions. Although this technique can combine images from different sensors, this requires that both have similar spectral ranges.
