A new mathematical model called hollow elliptical Gaussian beam (HEGB) is proposed to describe a dark-hollow laser beam with noncircular symmetry in terms of a tensor method. The HEGB can be expressed as a superposition of a series of elliptical Hermite–Gaussian modes. By using the generalized diffraction integral formulas for light passing through paraxial optical systems, analytical propagation formulas for HEGBs passing through paraxial aligned and misaligned optical systems are obtained through vector integration. As examples of applications, evolution properties of the intensity distribution of HEGBs in free-space propagation were studied. Propagation properties of HEGBs through a misaligned thin lens were also studied. The HEGB provides a convenient way to describe elliptical dark-hollow laser beams and can be used conveniently to study the motion of atoms in a dark-hollow laser beam.

An accurate description of a subcycle pulsed beam (SCPB) is presented based on the complex-source model. The fields are exact solutions of Maxwell’s equations and applicable to a focused pulsed beam with a pulse duration down to and below one cycle of the carrier wave and with arbitrary polarization state. Depending on the pulse duration, the pulse is blueshifted, and its wings are chirped. This effect, which we refer to as “self-induced blueshift” goes beyond the carrier-envelope description. The corresponding phase is a temporal analog of the Gouy phase. The energy gain of a relativistic electron swept over by an SCPB is very sensitive to the proper form chosen to describe the pulse.

Optically pumped atomic magnetometers based on spin exchange relaxation free regime have recently become a powerful tool in the field of magnetoencephalography measurements. For this application of magnetometers, simultaneous multilocation magnetic field measurements are desired. To fulfill the requirement, we develop a multi-channel sensor module based on a single large vapor cell. The probe beam passes through the vapor cell twice by reflection and then records the two-dimensional spatial magnetic field distribution with two 2 × 2 photodiode matrixes. Comparing with the previous multi-channel tangential magnetic field measuring sensors, our magnetometer is sensitive to the normal magnetic field by operating in the longitudinal parametric modulation mode. Measuring the normal component is considered more suitable for magnetoencephalography, because the normal component provides more information. The sensitivities of the channels are approximately 10 fT/Hz1/2 in the normal direction. The auditory evoked magnetic fields of the four adjacent locations perpendicular to the scalp are detected simultaneously. Our magnetometer can measure the normal and tangential magnetic fields simultaneously. The dual-axis vector measurement of magnetic field is very important for magnetoencephalography.

Dynamic precision measurement of gravity field is of great significance to the fields of geological surveying, resource exploration, and autonomous navigation now. Current dynamic gravity measurements remain relative, thereby facing the drawbacks of accuracy calibration and measurement value drift of instruments. Operation of the absolute gravimeters in dynamic measurement could solve these problems. Whereas, during the measurement of absolute gravity in a dynamic environment, the interference and coupling of the dynamic environment is an important issue to research urgently. In this paper, we report the new progress on our homemade marine survey system of absolute gravity, and the experimental improvements are introduced compared with the previous system. Furthermore, experiments of marine gravity surveys campaign are carried out in the Yellow Sea of China. The cross-over tracks and repeated survey lines are designed in order to evaluate the performance. The internal coincidence precision of our marine survey system is estimated to be 1.22 mGal and the results are also in good agreement with the reference data measured by the relative gravimeter, and an external coincidence accuracy of 1.62 mGal is obtained. Finally, methods of data processing are given in great detail and the surveyed results are compared with satellite gravity data and the data from the shipborne relative gravimeter. Our results may be helpful for the development of marine absolute gravimeters and the actual shipborne surveys of absolute gravity.

A partially coherent beam with flat-topped profile is proposed. The cross-spectral density of this beam can be expressed as a finite series of the cross-spectral density of partially coherent Gaussian-Schell-model beams with different parameters. Analytical propagation formulas for partially coherent flat-topped beams are derived through aligned and misaligned optical systems. The propagation property of partially coherent flat-topped beams in free space is illustrated numerically. The fractional Fourier transform of partially coherent flat-topped beams is also studied. Our method provides a convenient way to describe partially coherent flat-topped beams and treat their propagation and transformation.

Modulation transfer spectroscopy (MTS) is widely used in an optical laboratory for laser frequency stabilization. There have been many theoretical and experimental papers on this spectroscopic method. However, most of the works focus on the cycling transitions like the D2 line of rubidium. In this paper, the MTS for noncycling transitions is investigated. We consider the D1 line of rubidium whose modulation transfer spectrum has been determined and compared to the polarization spectrum. It is found that the slope of the modulation transfer signal is sharper than the polarization spectrum. The performance of laser frequency locking based on the MTS method is better than that of the polarization spectroscopy method. The dependence of the signal amplitude on the temperature of the vapor cell was analyzed, and the high signal-to-noise-ratio spectra are achieved for D1 open transitions. The obtained results provide an effective spectroscopic method for the robust frequency locking of a laser at a wavelength of 795 nm.
