Dr. Beatus Modest Lyimo is a One Health molecular epidemiologist and bioinformatician specializing in pathogen genomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, and infectious disease epidemiology. His research integrates human, animal, and environmental health to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR), zoonotic diseases, genomic surveillance, and climate-sensitive infectious diseases. Using next-generation sequencing (NGS), advanced bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence (AI), he develops innovative approaches to strengthen disease surveillance, outbreak preparedness, and evidence-based public health decision-making. Dr. Lyimo is a Lecturer and Researcher at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), Tanzania, where he teaches genomics and bioinformatics, supervises postgraduate students, and leads interdisciplinary One Health research. Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Bioinformatics at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), contributing to the Molecular Surveillance of Malaria in Tanzania (MSMT) project. His work applied population genomics to investigate Plasmodium falciparum genetic diversity, transmission dynamics, and antimalarial drug resistance, demonstrating the value of genomic surveillance for malaria control. His broader expertise includes microbial genomics, metagenomics, microbiome science, zoonotic pathogen surveillance, phylogenetics, and AI-enabled climate-health early warning systems.
