Biography

Prof. (Dr.) Daniela De Biase is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at the Sapienza University of Rome and has received the habilitation to full professorship. She graduated (summa cum laude) in Biological Sciences at the Sapienza University of Rome. She then moved to the University of Wales, College of Cardiff, Wales (UK) to carry out research for her PhD in Biochemistry. She took up a research and teaching position (Researcher/Assistant Professor) at the University of Rome La Sapienza, where she is still continuing her scientific career. She spent short research periods in the UK, Switzerland, Germany, and France. She is an expert on PLP-dependent enzymes, in particular bacterial glutamate decarboxylase (GAD), and its biotechnological applications, and GABA-transaminase (GABA-T). She is a leading expert in the field of bacterial responses to acid stress. She has led the COST Action CA18113 “EuroMicropH” (2019–2023), initially as Vice-Chair and then as Chair. In the last decade, she has expanded her scientific interests to novel antimicrobials incorporating phoshorous/sulfur-containing analogues of glutamate, and to the phenomenon of bacterial persistence. In more recent years, she is expanding her interest to the skin and bladder human microbiota in health and disease.
