A borehole heat exchanger (BHE) presents the most reliable source of geothermal energy for any object where the heat pump system is to be installed. The main objective of BHE optimization in a specific rock massive and for calculated heat consumption is to design a BHE with proper capacity and sustainable performance. One of the most important inputs for the preparation of such a model is the average outer air temperature on the site during the year. While the properties of the local rock massive are from the heat project lifetime view (tens of years) stable, the local average outer temperature fluctuates according to global climate changes. This article presents a study of the impact of climate changes on the dimensioning process of a BHE and consequently on its performance using data from a real installation at a highly climate-exposed site in the Czech Republic. During the dimensioning of a BHE, this study could help to better quantify the objective risks that result from climate changes. However, the results of this study show that the currently calculated impact of an increase in outer temperature is not crucial, but it is advisable to take this new fact into account during the design and dimensioning process, especially for large installations. To study the ground in terms of usable energy potential at climate-exposed locations properly, the available data were critically analyzed and the results were then synthesized in an appropriate way for the needs of the data simulations.

Thermal methods (simultaneous thermal analysis coupled with quadrupole mass spectrometry STA- QMS and retort) were applied to characterization of microporous rocks of different clay content. Two series of samples were investigated: highly diagenetic lower Paleozoic mudstones from Polish Lowlands and less altered Miocene and Paleocene rocks from the Carpathian Foredeep. The aim of the presented work was to differentiate between “free” and “bound” water in the pore space, to estimate the amount of fluids obtained by using retort method in regard to the distinction between free water, capillary water, clay bound water and organic matter fluids. In order to evaluate the retort results it was necessary to determine the temperatures at which a particular kind of water is released. The interpretation was based on the results of STA – QMS investigations together with XRD analysis of the mineral content, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and organic carbon content (TOC) measurements. In STA investigations the loss of mass connected with water release from clay minerals was observed in two temperature ranges: from 40 °C to 150 °C (adsorbed water) and from 440 °C to 620 °C (structural water). When analysing retort measurements, a considerable upward shift of adsorbed water release temperature can be observed. In case of Miocene and Paleocene rocks interpretation results of adsorbed water content indicate the temperature range from 150 to 450 °C, and in case of Lower Paleozoic rocks from 150 °C to 350 °C. Structural water is released at temperatures 500 °C −650 °C. A condensate connected with organic matter was observed within the temperature range 350–500 °C for Lower Paleozoic rock samples of high organic matter content (TOC>2). Taking into account the methodical discrepancies, a satisfactory compliance of results obtained by both methods in regard to the volume of clay bound water and condensate connected with organic matter was found. The results show that thermal methods can be successfully used for evaluation of saturations necessary for proper estimation of reservoir properties.

VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava (VŠB-TU Ostrava) has unique conditions for analysing temperature changes in the rock mass while borehole heat exchangers have been operational for a long time. The Auditory building is heated with a system of heat pumps (borehole heat exchangers). It is one of the largest such objects in the Czech Republic. The heat of the rock mass is provided by a system of technological boreholes. The research boreholes are used for monitoring temperature changes in the rock mass while using the Auditory’s heating system. The system for monitoring boreholes within the area of technological borehole activity is called Large Research Polygon (LRP). Apart from LRP, the university also possesses another research polygon – Small Research Polygon (SRP) located at a distance from the LRP near the Energy Research Centre (ERC). All boreholes performed within both research fields are equipped with sensors monitoring the temperature changes while the Auditory building is being heated (thermal energy is recovered from the rock mass in winter) or cooled (thermal energy is transmitted to the rock mass in summer). The main objective of the research carried out in both research fields is checking the functionality and efficiency of the entire system. Certain aspects of thermal energy recuperation from the rock mass are described. The paper is closed with the results of monitoring and calculation of temperature in the surface layers to about 20 m of depth.

Prediction of hydrogeochemical effects of geological CO2 sequestration is crucial for planning an industrial or even experimental scale injection of carbon dioxide gas into geological formations. This paper presents a preliminary study of the suitability of saline aquifer associated with a depleted oil field in Czech Part of Vienna Basin, as potential greenhouse gas repository. Two steps of modeling enabled prediction of immediate changes in the aquifer and caprocks impacted by the first stage of CO2 injection and the assessment of long-term effects of sequestration. Hydrochemical modeling and experimental tests of rock–water–gas interactions allowed for evaluation of trapping mechanisms and assessment of CO2 storage capacity of the formations. In the analyzed aquifer, CO2 gas may be locked in mineral form in dolomite and dawsonite, and the calculated trapping capacity reaches 13.22 kgCO2/m3. For the caprock, the only mineral able to trap CO2 is dolomite, and trapping capacity equals to 5.07 kgCO2/m3.

Sustainable tourism development meets the needs of present tourists and host regions while protecting and increasing its possibilities for the future. It should lead to management of all resources, so as to meet economic, social and aesthetic needs while maintaining cultural integrity, the most important ecological processes, biological diversity and the processes that make life possible. Sustainable tourism products are products that work in accordance with the local environment, society and culture so that the environment, society and culture can benefit and not to become the victims of tourism development. At present, luckily, it is possible to observe, in a wide range of tourist activities and especially in industrialized countries, also increasing interest in so-called industrial tourism aimed at exploring technical monuments. This form of tourism was initially the domain of narrow range of technically-based supporters, but gradually becomes more attractive to the broader public. This article deals with the development and transformation of tourism in the Czech Republic on an example of the Podluzi region and one of its centres - the town of Hodonin. From the tourist activities in the region those specifically attractive ones should be mentioned, which are wine and folklore tourism in close connection with gastronomical tourism and then increasingly popular cycling and water tourism. As for the cycling tourism, there are routes (related to the Greenways programme) leading so that they connect all the major winegrowing sites of the region and also the basic backbone network of cycling routes passing through the territory of the Czech Republic. The development of water tourism is closely linked to industrial tourism, where the important technical monument - the Bata’s channel is used as a waterway. The history of the town of Hodonin is briefly mentioned here in the context of the progressive industrialization of the area (lignite and hydrocarbon mining), its significant downturn and subsequent changes in tourist activities.

This article is dealing with fiber optics application into the geological monitoring. The distributed temperature systems (DTS) are optoelectronic devices, which can continuously measure the temperature and strain along optical cables. These systems use the advantageous properties of optical fibers, which can equally act as sensors. Currently, the DTS systems begin to be applied across the entire spectrum of the industry as well as in the renewable energy field. Therefore, this article focuses on the application of the temperature measurements in the subsurface boreholes in the rock massif with regard to the heat pump sealing T-piece design (designed element allowing insertion of the optical cables into the polythene pipes). The rock massif behavior during long term charging and drawing regimes with the help of thermal response test was observed.

The largest been realized installations of heat pumps in the Czech Republic, where the primary collector of low-potential heat is formed deep wells, is heating complex building of new Auditorium and CIT in campus of VSB Technical University of Ostrava. This building represents two independent functional units (Auditorium with side halls and Information Technology Centre - CIT) with a total floor area of 9234 m2. The original project planned compound heating using district heating as a primary source of heat. Heating the object itself is a combination of floor heating systems and hot-air heaters. During project preparation has changed the project heating and a modern, technically unique and highly cost-effective solution has been designed with heat pump (type rock-water). Currently building heats 10 heat pumps with a total output of 700 kW through 110 wells with a depth of 130 m each. To assess the proportions of individual internal and external sources to the overall heat balance, the verification of systems designed for long-term monitoring of the behaviour of the rock massive around the energy used wells and energy storage options have been proposed and gradually implemented two research measuring polygons. They are located in the area of energy utilized wells. Each of the monitoring wells is instrumented with sensors at a certain depth. This article discusses the implementation of research polygons on experience with the excavation of wells using temperature sensors, a data acquisition system and finally outlines the possibilities of evaluating the measurement data.
