Purpose: Housekeeping is an important hotel process from the point-of-view of the number of work hours it takes and its impact on customer satisfaction. However, few previous scientific studies have addressed this topic or the variables that are determinants of the time required to clean a room.Design/methodology/approach: A stopwatch Time Study has been performed in a 4-star-hotel. Additionally, data on several variables that could affect cleaning time have been collected and subjected to regression analysis.Findings: Results show that only the task-related variables have a statistically significant influence on total cleaning time. None of the analyzed employee-related variables have any effect on cleaning time. Moreover, five tasks represent over 2/3 of the total cleaning time.Originality/value: In addition to empirically identifying the variables that influence cleaning time and to what extent, this study demonstrates the advantages of using stopwatch time studies to establish cleaning times.

The present work contains an evaluation of the accessibility of museums in the city of Seville, as part of the tourism offerings of the city from a cultural perspective. From an evaluation questionnaire on the city’s museums, we obtained an aggregate indicator of compliance with accessibility regulations. The instrument was designed based on the legal requirements in force at the EU (European Union) level, as well as international standards such as ISO 170001 and accessibility conventions such as those from the United Nations Organization (UN). In a complementary manner, a questionnaire with open and semi open questions was designed and used for interviews carried out with the personnel responsible for the museums examined. A variety of quantitative and qualitative information of great value was obtained for setting guidelines or priorities for action in this area. At the level of the political powers and other interest groups involved, our results allow for homogeneous evaluations that can facilitate the setting of priorities in the planning and development of tourism accessibility policies for all types of families.

The low satisfaction of university accounting teachers with the mentoring process of the Final Year Dissertation (FYD) has motivated carrying out this study. Moreover, lecturers are very interested in knowing which factors are influencing this satisfaction. The aim of the study is to detect which factors explain this state of satisfaction and model this relation. The elements which have been able to influence this opinion have been identified and studied. Exploratory factor analysis has extracted 5 factors from them: the acceptation of the methodology, the perception of competence, generic competences, the importance of instrumental competences and the importance of systemic competences. The results reveal the relations between the constructs and satisfaction. In conclusion, if we wish to build a teaching strategy which reinforces university accounting teachers’ degree of satisfaction in their work mentoring the FYD, this should be centred on enhancing its generic competences. The development of these generic competences directly or indirectly impacts the mentors’ opinions concerning the importance of the instrumental and systemic competences and, consequently, their satisfaction.

The Qhapac Ñan (Main Andean Road or Camino Real) is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This study contributes to the improvement of quality of life of the communities situated along this trail by applying a critical conceptual framework which regards to archeological and historical tourism as a source of income and culture, incorporating and creating important cultural and natural tourism locations as well as an infrastructure that could generate income for the communities through revaluation. This work consists in the description of landmarks through which the Inca Trail passes in the northern, border-front region of Ecuador, including participant observation and semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders. The results revealed, apart from the existence of numerous archeological vestiges which could be exploited for tourism, valuable ways in which a community-based, archeological tourism could be implemented.

This chapter shows a developers’ view of the dynamics in the Internet ecosystem. The chapter analyses what is happening in the world of developers, what they do and how the Internet is seen from the thousands of start-ups that form it. Do developers think that there is a disruption that is the same or equivalent to what the big Internet companies create in other scopes? That is the research question the chapter aims to explore. The chapter starts by illustrating the evolution of programming languages over the past decades so as to better understand the evolution of developers’ logic and the different developer profiles. It also discusses some of the possible future scenarios that might be expected, from the perspective of developers and start-ups and their role in the Internet ecosystem as a whole. The chapter concludes by discussing the potential utility and adequacy of the epigenetic (i.e. EED) approximation for studying developer-related dynamics in the previous scenarios and raises the possibility of their being studied from a quantum approach.

The study of variability in categorical characteristics is rarely discussed. From a less used viewpoint of variability in quantitative variables, as it is the one of dissimilarity, which is different from the dispersion that, for example, the variance provides, we propose the construction of two coefficients that measure the variability in qualitative or categorical variables, which we call coefficients of dissimilarity. Simple examples are provided to introduce the measures, so that the teacher can also evaluate the idea students have about variability, dispersion and dissimilarity.

A game called “Azar” is presented in the second part of the Book “The Book of Chess, Dice and Tables” by Alfonso X El Sabio (The Learned) (1221-1284). The rules of this Azar game depend on two events called “chance” and “azar”. The winning probability in this Azar game implies an event whose probability depends on an infinite number of three-dice rolls. We intend to demonstrate here that this probability is of around 50 %. We associated this game with other games, like the Hazard game by Montmort, Cotton, Hoyle and De Moivre, and also with the Cinq et Neuf game of J. Bernoulli. Finally, we see that the first Hazard game of De Moivre is the famous Craps game.
