Biography

Manuel J. Mendes received his PhD in 2012 from the Instituto de Energía Solar of Univ. Politécnica de Madrid. He has been a Professor at DCM/NOVA since 2019 and Senior Researcher at CENIMAT/i3N working in the fields of light management (nanophotonics) for photovoltaics and solar fuels, mainly for consumer-oriented applications in buildings and flexible electronics (IoT). He has been involved in 15 national and 7 international projects, such as the EU project APOLO (H2020-LCE-2017-RES-RIA), which was aimed at developing photonic-enhanced flexible Perovskite solar cells for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), where he is WP leader and was a co-writer of the proposal. In the past 5 years, he has been PI of 1 national (SuperSolar) and 1 EU (Dielectric PV) project, as well as the institution responsible and WP leader in 3 national and 1 H2020 projects. He is author of more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings and listed as a co-inventor of 2 U.S. Patents. The first patent was distinguished with an award from the NASA Inventions and Contributions Board and the second opened a research line in plasmonic intermediate band solar cells. Dr. Mendes has also been awarded 2 prestigious Marie Curie Experienced Research Fellowships related to photonic-enhanced solar cells, acts as regular reviewer for 30 scientific journals, and was co-editor of the journal Frontiers in Materials (Nature Publishing Group).
