Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a disease produced by the (PRRS) virus, characterized by endemic evolution in the majority of countries, which remains in actuality being a permanent threat to health and economic free farms, as well as for those infected. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity of Romanian PRRSV isolates from the four most important pig farms in Romania by comparing the nucleotide sequences obtained for ORF5 and ORF7 with a wide range of sequences from GenBank belonging to the main types of PRRSV; the type 1. Eighteen different sequences were obtained for ORF5 gene and 10 for ORF7 gene. One Romanian isolate (Rom3) was found in three of the four different investigated farms. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the Romanian PRRSV nucleotide sequences clustered in three groups within the subtype 1 of the virus. The analysis of amino acid sequences evidenced for GP5 and N-nucleocapsid proteins confirmed that the Romanian virus belonged to type 1.

: Brucellosis is endemic in Palestine and therefore since 1998 a national program of brucellosis control has been launched. In the traditional breeding area of small ruminants, brucellosis is often reported in humans, mainly as a food borne disease. Any control strategy requires a well-functioning surveillance system, the co-operation with owners and a sustainable financial support. The aim of this study is sizing up of the current situation of knowledge, of the attitude and practice (KAP) regarding brucellosis, among sheep and goat farmers. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 118 participants through an anonymous questionnaire to assess to which extent the flock owners are familiar with the knowledge and practices related to brucellosis of small ruminants. The designs of the questionnaire consider the implementation of KAP. Results shown that farmers, independent on their education, heard about brucellosis (100%) and all of them consider the washing of hands as necessary after close contact with animals or their products, and animal vaccination as being necessary to prevent brucellosis. Despite the educational level, almost all owners are aware about the risk of exposure of their family to animals infected with Brucella: they are considering the heating of cheese at boiling point and the use of gloves, as appropriate practices to reduce the exposure to Brucella. Great majorities of the participants (89.8%) have good knowledge about the transmission of Brucella from animals to humans, but only 37.3% correctly answered about the transmission of brucellosis by drinking raw milk, eating unpasteurized cheese, eating raw meat, liver, spleen and kidney or by contact with an aborted foetus and placenta fluid. Referring to the brucellosis’ prevention, 83% answered that boiling of milk and cheese and wearing of gloves when handling an aborted foetus could prevent it: these answers fit with the level of knowledge. From the questioned owners, 28.8% knew that boiling the milk affect his nutritive value; 84.7% think that owners of animals and their families are more exposed to brucellosis and 11.9% of their families have been diseased. Relative good general knowledge of owners about brucellosis was recorded, but high-risk behaviors still exist. Awareness campaigns on the control and prevention of the brucellosis are success stories, and government agencies should continue the public education.

Colibacillosis in poultry is relating with the colonisation with so called Avian Pathogen E. coli (APEC) strains. It is already known that usually in the APEC isolates are present at least 13 virulence-associated genes. We selected 12 non-repetitive E. coli isolates from different Romanian poultry outbreaks. Isolates have been evaluated for the presence of the virulence-associated genes, iroN and iucC. The DNA extraction was made using QIAamp cador Pathogen Mini Kit (Qiagen). The amplification protocol was: a cycle of denaturation at 94°C for 5 min followed by 35 cycles of 94°C for 30 s, 63°C for 45 s and 72°C for 105 s, and a cycle of 72°C for 7 min. Both virulence-associated genes were identified in 83.33% (11/12) isolates. In two APEC isolates, only one gene was identified, iroN or iucC, respectively. According to these preliminary results it could be assumed that iroN and iucC genes are independently expressing their virulence.

INTRODUCTION: Maedi-Visna (MV) and Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis (CAE) are specific diseases of small ruminants caused by lentiretroviruses. These diseases are not a public health concern but they are important due to their economic impact. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to analyse the results of the serological screening for MVV and CAEV antibodies in samples collected from small ruminants farms located in 14 Romanian counties and the proximity of Bucharest city. METHODS: The samples were analysed by indirect ELISA, using a commercial diagnosis kit. We investigated 702 serum samples in 160 iELISA tests: 148 pools (2-5 samples/pool) and 12 individual animals. RESULTS: We noticed 27.50% positive samples that confirm the exposure to MVV and CAEV viruses of small ruminants, but the confirmation is requesting investigation using molecular biology tools or other serological techniques. CONCLUSION: A reliable picture over the SRLV infections could underlie a national program for monitoring.

Introduction: Colibacillosis in poultry is determined by avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) and represents an important source of economic losses in the poultry industry. APEC’s pathogenicity relies on the presence and expression of different virulence factors. The genes ompA , iss and fimH, encoding the outer membrane protein, the protein inducing resistance to complement and the synthesis of type 1 fimbria are present in APEC strains. Objective: Escherichia coli strains isolated from layers were analysed to assess the pathotype they belong to. Methods: In order to detect the three genes associated with APEC strains, 16 E. coli isolates were investigated for virulence associated genes ompA, iss and fimH, using multiplex PCR. Results: From the 16 E.coli strains submitted, multiplex PCR assessment revealed that 14 (87.5%) of the E. coli strains isolated contained at least one virulence gene, while 2 (12.5%) strains did not harbour any of the virulence genes tested. The fimH gene was noted in 13 (81.25%) of the strains tested, the ompA gene has been present in 12 (75%) strains and the iss gene was present in 9 (56.25%) strains. Eight (50%) strains were found to present all three investigated genes. Conclusion: Presence of these genes is a strong indicatory to consider those strains as belonging to the APEC pathotype.
