We propose to estimate 3D human pose from multi-view images and a few IMUs attached at person's limbs. It operates by firstly detecting 2D poses from the two signals, and then lifting them to the 3D space. We present a geometric approach to reinforce the visual features of each pair of joints based on the IMUs. This notably improves 2D pose estimation accuracy especially when one joint is occluded. We call this approach Orientation Regularized Network (ORN). Then we lift the multi-view 2D poses to the 3D space by an Orientation Regularized Pictorial Structure Model (ORPSM) which jointly minimizes the projection error between the 3D and 2D poses, along with the discrepancy between the 3D pose and IMU orientations. The simple two-step approach reduces the error of the state-of-the-art by a large margin on a public dataset. Our code will be released at https://github.com/microsoft/imu-human-pose-estimation-pytorch.

This paper proposes three route control strategies for autonomous vehicles (AVs) exiting to off-ramps. First, two microscopic lane-changing models are developed to simulate the off-ramp behaviors for AVs. A risk factor λ is introduced in the discretionary lane-changing (DLC) model, and a five-step process is developed for the mandatory lane-changing (MLC) model. Second, three route control strategies are presented, i.e., grading strategy (GS), half-overlap strategy (HOS), and full-overlap strategy (FOS). Finally, the extensive numerical simulations are conducted to analyze the characteristics of each strategy based on the MATLAB platform. The results indicate that the studied area displays significant variability in spatiotemporal dynamics of average velocity and road capacity under different strategies. It is found that the GS is the most effective control strategy for traffic congestion dissipation and travel delay reduction, followed by the HOS and, then, the FOS. The road capacity under the GS is increased by 19.1% and 7.8% compared to the FOS and the HOS, respectively. Furthermore, the GS consumes lower costs in terms of safety, travel efficiency, and route and lane switch frequency compared to the HOS and FOS, which is verified as the optimal strategy according to overall running cost. The findings of this paper can provide useful references for the design of AVs as well as the management of the automated highway systems.

Generally, most approaches using methods such as cropping, rotating, and flipping achieve more data to train models for improving the accuracy of detection and segmentation. However, due to the difficulties of labeling such data especially semantic segmentation data, those traditional data augmentation methodologies cannot help a lot when the training set is really limited. In this paper, a model named OFA-Net (One For All Network) is proposed to combine object detection and semantic segmentation tasks. Meanwhile, using a strategy called “1-N Alternation” to train the OFA-Net model, which can make a fusion of features from detection and segmentation data. The results show that object detection data can be recruited to better the segmentation accuracy performance, and furthermore, segmentation data assist a lot to enhance the confidence of predictions for object detection. Finally, the OFA-Net model is trained without traditional data augmentation methodologies and tested on the KITTI test server. The model works well on the KITTI Road Segmentation challenge and can do a good job on the object detection task.

Multiple-camera systems can expand coverage and mitigate occlusion problems. However, temporal synchronization remains a problem for budget cameras and capture devices. We propose an out-of-the-box framework to temporally synchronize multiple cameras using semantic human pose estimation from the videos. Human pose predictions are obtained with an out-of-the-shelf pose estimator for each camera. Our method firstly calibrates each pair of cameras by minimizing an energy function related to epipolar distances. We also propose a simple yet effective multiple-person association algorithm across cameras and a score-regularized energy function for improved performance. Secondly, we integrate the synchronized camera pairs into a graph and derive the optimal temporal displacement configuration for the multiple-camera system. We evaluate our method on four public benchmark datasets and demonstrate robust sub-frame synchronization accuracy on all of them.

Occlusion is probably the biggest challenge for human pose estimation in the wild. Typical solutions often rely on intrusive sensors such as IMUs to detect occluded joints. To make the task truly unconstrained, we present AdaFuse, an adaptive multiview fusion method, which can enhance the features in occluded views by leveraging those in visible views. The core of AdaFuse is to determine the point-point correspondence between two views which we solve effectively by exploring the sparsity of the heatmap representation. We also learn an adaptive fusion weight for each camera view to reflect its feature quality in order to reduce the chance that good features are undesirably corrupted by ``bad'' views. The fusion model is trained end-to-end with the pose estimation network, and can be directly applied to new camera configurations without additional adaptation. We extensively evaluate the approach on three public datasets including Human3.6M, Total Capture and CMU Panoptic. It outperforms the state-of-the-arts on all of them. We also create a large scale synthetic dataset Occlusion-Person, which allows us to perform numerical evaluation on the occluded joints, as it provides occlusion labels for every joint in the images. The dataset and code are released at https://github.com/zhezh/adafuse-3d-human-pose.
