In contrast to the interaction between two magnets with opposite magnetization directions, the interaction between a permanent magnet and a superconductor can be stable and result in magnetic levitation. This property can be exploited for the development of high velocity rotating bearings with no mechanical contacts and for the development of levitated trains. In this review, we focus on this latter application. After a brief description of the other techniques developed for levitating trains and the resulting achievements, we describe the magnet–superconductor interaction and recall the achievements in this field. We then give insights into the properties of the employed magnets and arrangement of magnets and we detail the characteristics and the fabrication processes of the most frequently used superconductors. Focusing on physics, we detail the procedures generally used for measuring the vertical (levitation) and the lateral (guidance) forces in magnetic levitation and the results obtained from experiments. We detail and give a critical review of the various models proposed for reproducing the force measurements. In the conclusion we discuss the possible future developments of the technology.

Although the fascinating effect of superconductivity was discovered more than 100 years ago, only a few low-temperature superconductors, especially Nb3Sn and NbTi, have reached everyday-life use. After the discovery of superconductivity in MgB2 in 2001, a boom appeared in interest in employing MgB2 in commercial applications, facilitated by simple crystallographic structure, high critical temperature, low-cost raw ingredients, simple and fast production, and other advantages for moderate temperature applications. It only lacks high flux pinning and good mechanical performance. In this review, the implications of manufacturing procedures on the superconducting properties, crystal and electronic structure of MgB2 are discussed. The advantages and drawbacks of various manufacturing processes will be presented, as well as the ways how to improve MgB2 superconducting performance. The impact of oxygen reduction, elements doping, the introduction of defects and additives, and the effect of precursor refinement on superconducting properties are here compiled to give an overview of the progress of flux pinning enhancement in bulk MgB2.

Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) is a promising rapid consolidation technique that allows a better understanding and optimization of the sintering kinetics and therefore makes it possible to obtain MgB 2 bulk superconductor with tailored microstructures consisting of grains with either spherical or elongated morphology. In this contribution, the role of the precursor powders on the superconducting properties of MgB 2 is investigated. Three sets of bulk MgB 2 material were processed from: (i) a commercially available MgB 2 powder; (ii) a mixture of Mg metal and amorphous B using a single‐step solid‐state reaction process and (iii) a mixture of amorphous boron coated with carbon and Mg metal. The samples were prepared in the same SPS processing conditions. The microstructure of the samples was investigated by X‐ray diffraction, SEM and TEM and correlated to their superconducting properties. The critical current density of the best sample at 20K was J c  = 500 kA/cm 2 in self‐field, which is one of the highest critical current density reported for MgB 2 bulk superconductors.
