Vegetation in arid and semi-arid regions frequently exists in patches, which can be effectively mapped by remote sensing. However, not all satellite images are suitable to detect the decametric-scale vegetation patches because of low spatial resolution. This study compared the capability of the first Gaofen Satellite (GF-1), the second Gaofen Satellite (GF-2), and China-Brazil Earth Resource Satellite 4 (CBERS-04) panchromatic images for mapping quasi-circular vegetation patches (QVPs) with K-Means (KM) and object-based example-based feature extraction with support vector machine classification (OEFE) in the Yellow River Delta, China. Both approaches provide relatively high classification accuracy with GF-2. For all five images, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) for area, perimeter, and perimeter/area ratio were smaller using the KM than the OEFE, indicating that the results from the KM are more similar to ground truth. Although the mapped results of the QVPs from finer-spatial resolution images appeared more accurate, accuracy improvement in terms of QVP area, perimeter, and perimeter/area ratio was limited, and most of the QVPs detected only by finer-spatial resolution imagery had a more than 40% difference with the actual QVPs in these three parameters. Compared with the KM approach, the OEFE approach performed better for vegetation patch shape description. Coupling the CBERS-04 with the OEFE approach could suitably map the QVPs (overall accuracy 75.3%). This is important for ecological protection managers concerned about cost-effectiveness between image spatial resolution and mapping the QVPs.
Soil moisture dynamics are a key parameter in regulating agricultural productivity and ecosystem functioning. The accurate monitoring and quantitative retrieval of soil moisture play a crucial role in optimizing agricultural water resource management. In recent years, the development of multi-source remote sensing technologies—such as high spatiotemporal resolution optical, radar, and thermal infrared sensors—has opened new avenues for efficient soil moisture retrieval. However, the accuracy of soil moisture retrieval decreases significantly when the soil is covered by vegetation. This study proposes a multi-modal remote sensing collaborative retrieval framework that integrates UAV-based multispectral imagery, Sentinel-1 radar data, and in situ ground sampling. By incorporating a vegetation suppression technique, a random-forest-based quantitative soil moisture model was constructed to specifically address the interference caused by dense vegetation during crop growing seasons. The results demonstrate that the retrieval performance of the model was significantly improved across different soil depths (0–5 cm, 5–10 cm, 10–15 cm, 15–20 cm). After vegetation suppression, the coefficient of determination (R2) exceeded 0.8 for all soil layers, while the mean absolute error (MAE) decreased by 35.1% to 49.8%. This research innovatively integrates optical–radar–thermal multi-source data and a physically driven vegetation suppression strategy to achieve high-accuracy, meter-scale dynamic mapping of soil moisture in vegetated areas. The proposed method provides a reliable technical foundation for precision irrigation and drought early warning.
Water and sediment fluxes into the sea are the basis for the stability of the ecological pattern of the Yellow River Delta (YRD). As a Ramsar wetland of international importance, the YRD is facing the huge ecological risk of land degradation due to changes in water–sediment fluxes into the sea. In this study, we investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of the coastline and subaerial delta using annual remote sensing images and revealed more detailed and clear relationships between water–sediment fluxes into the sea and the YRD evolution, including the whole delta and its subregions (e.g., the Qingshuigou and Diaokou regions) from 1976 to 2022. Our results showed that the mean yearly water and sediment fluxes during the study period amounted to 210.50 × 108 m3 yr−1 and 367.81 Mt yr−1, respectively. There was an abrupt change in water and sediment fluxes into the sea in 1999, and both decreased significantly from 1976 to 1999, whereas the water discharge has significantly increased and the sediment flux has stabilized since around 2000. The delta area evolutions of the whole YRD and the Qingshuigou region can be characterized by three stages: a rapid growth stage (1976–1993), a rapid retreat stage (1993–2002), and a gradual recovery stage (2002–2022). The area in the Diaokou region displayed a continuous decreasing trend from 1976 to 2022. The regression analysis indicated that the relationships between cumulative sediment flux and cumulative land accretion area presented spatiotemporal differentiation. The cumulative land accretion area increased with the cumulative sediment flux in the whole YRD and its subregions from 1976 to 1992, decreased with the cumulative sediment flux in the YRD from 1993 to 2002, except for the northeast of Qingshuigou, and then expanded with the cumulative sediment flux in the YRD from 2003 to 2022, except for the southeast of Qingshuigou.
Agricultural nonpoint-source pollution (ANPSP) is a key cause of global environmental problems. However, the estimation of ANPSP, based on agricultural land use type, crop management, and attenuation of pollutants with distance, is lacking. Using the Mun River Basin as an example, this study established quantitative response relationships between subbasin flows and hydrological and water quality parameters. A good matching of the monitored sections and the control area based on flow relationships was achieved. By determining flow paths and flow distances, the overland and in-river transport attenuations of ANPSP were clarified. The overland and in-river transport and attenuation parameters were also quantified. The land use distribution and structure were further refined through crop management, which included crop types and crop rotation (monocropping or double cropping). Based on the above procedures, quantitative relationships among land use pattern, crop management, attenuation of pollutants with distance, and river water quality were established and used to construct six kinds of regression models. Among these models, the best modeling results were obtained when the parameters of water quality, land use structure, crop management, and soil nutrient attenuation were included. The modeling accuracy in the dry season increased from 0.398 to 0.881 when information about attenuation with distance and crop management was included. Similarly, the modeling accuracy in the wet season increased from 0.365 to 0.727. This study’s findings indicate that the constructed water quality model is effective and has significance for the quantitative determination of ANPSP.
