This paper aims to introduce a robust framework for forecasting demand, including data preprocessing, data transformation and standardization, feature selection, cross‐validation, and regression ensemble framework. Bagging (random forest regression (RFR)), boosting (gradient boosting regression (GBR) and extreme gradient boosting regression (XGBR)), and stacking (STACK) are employed as ensemble models. Different machine learning (ML) approaches, including support vector regression (SVR), extreme learning machine (ELM), and multilayer perceptron neural network (MLP), are adopted as reference models. In order to maximize the determination coefficient (R2) value and reduce the root mean square error (RMSE), hyperparameters are set using the grid search method. Using a steel industry dataset, all tests are carried out under identical experimental conditions. In this context, STACK1 (ELM + GBR + XGBR‐SVR) and STACK2 (ELM + GBR + XGBR‐LASSO) models provided better performance than other models. The highest accuracies of R2 of 0.97 and 0.97 are obtained using STACK1 and STACK2, respectively. Moreover, the rank according to performances is STACK1, STACK2, XGBR, GBR, RFR, MLP, ELM, and SVR. As it improves the performance of models and reduces the risk of decision‐making, the ensemble method can be used to forecast the demand in a steel industry one month ahead.

Hypertension is a potentially dangerous health condition that can be detected by measuring blood pressure (BP). Blood pressure monitoring and measurement are essential for preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases. Cuff-based devices, on the other hand, are uncomfortable and prevent continuous BP measurement. In this study, a new non-invasive and cuff-less method for estimating Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP), Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP), and Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP) has been proposed using characteristic features of photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals and nonlinear regression algorithms. PPG signals were collected from 219 participants, which were then subjected to preprocessing and feature extraction steps. Analyzing PPG and its derivative signals, a total of 46 time, frequency, and time-frequency domain features were extracted. In addition, the age and gender of each subject were also included as features. Further, correlation-based feature selection (CFS) and Relief F feature selection (ReliefF) techniques were used to select the relevant features and reduce the possibility of over-fitting the models. Finally, support vector regression (SVR), K-nearest neighbour regression (KNR), decision tree regression (DTR), and random forest regression (RFR) were established to develop the BP estimation model. Regression models were trained and evaluated on all features as well as selected features. The best regression models for SBP, MAP, and DBP estimations were selected separately. The SVR model, along with the ReliefF-based feature selection algorithm, outperforms other algorithms in estimating the SBP, MAP, and DBP with the mean absolute error of 2.49, 1.62 and 1.43 mmHg, respectively. The proposed method meets the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation standard for BP estimations. Based on the British Hypertension Society standard, the results also fall within Grade A for SBP, MAP, and DBP. The findings show that the method can be used to estimate blood pressure non-invasively, without using a cuff or calibration, and only by utilizing the PPG signal characteristic features.

Blood components such as hemoglobin, glucose, creatinine measuring are essential for monitoring one's health condition. The current blood component measurement approaches still depend on invasive techniques that are painful, and uncomfortable for the patients. To facilitate measurement at home, we proposed a novel non-invasive technique to measure blood hemoglobin, glucose, and creatinine level based on PPG signal using Deep Neural Networks (DNN). Fingertip videos from 93 subjects have been collected using a smartphone. The PPG signal is generated from each video, and 46 characteristic features are then extracted from the PPG signal, its derivatives (1 st and 2 nd ) and from Fourier analysis. Additionally, age and gender are also included to feature because of the significant effects on hemoglobin, glucose, and creatinine. A correlation-based feature selection (CFS) using genetic algorithms (GA) has been used to select the optimal features to avoid redundancy and over-fitting. Finally, DNN based models have been developed to estimate the blood Hemoglobin (Hb), Glucose (Gl), and Creatinine (Cr) levels from the selected features. The approach provides the best-estimated accuracy of R 2 = 0.922 for Hb, R 2 = 0.902 for Gl, and R 2 = 0.969 for Cr. Experimental aftermaths show that the proposed method is a suitable technique to be used clinically to measure human blood component levels without taking blood samples. This paper also reveals that smartphone-based PPG signal has a great potential to measure the different blood components.
