As an emerging research topic, online class imbalance learning often combines the challenges of both class imbalance and concept drift. It deals with data streams having very skewed class distributions, where concept drift may occur. It has recently received increased research attention; however, very little work addresses the combined problem where both class imbalance and concept drift coexist. As the first systematic study of handling concept drift in class-imbalanced data streams, this paper first provides a comprehensive review of current research progress in this field, including current research focuses and open challenges. Then, an in-depth experimental study is performed, with the goal of understanding how to best overcome concept drift in online learning with class imbalance.

The scientific outcomes of the 2022 Landslide4Sense (L4S) competition organized by the Institute of Advanced Research in Artificial Intelligence (IARAI) are presented here. The objective of the competition is to automatically detect landslides based on large-scale multiple sources of satellite imagery collected globally. The 2022 L4S aims to foster interdisciplinary research on recent developments in deep learning (DL) models for the semantic segmentation task using satellite imagery. In the past few years, DL-based models have achieved performance that meets expectations on image interpretation, due to the development of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The main objective of this article is to present the details and the best-performing algorithms featured in this competition. The winning solutions are elaborated with state-of-the-art models like the Swin Transformer, SegFormer, and U-Net. Advanced machine learning techniques and strategies such as hard example mining, self-training, and mix-up data augmentation are also considered. Moreover, we describe the L4S benchmark data set in order to facilitate further comparisons, and report the results of the accuracy assessment online. The data is accessible on Future Development Leaderboard for future evaluation at https://www.iarai.ac.at/landslide4sense/challenge/ , and researchers are invited to submit more prediction results, evaluate the accuracy of their methods, compare them with those of other users, and, ideally, improve the landslide detection results reported in this article.

The advent of the sixth generation of mobile communications (6G) ushers in an era of heightened demand for advanced network intelligence to tackle the challenges of an expanding network landscape and increasing service demands. Deep Learning (DL), as a crucial technique for instilling intelligence into 6G, has demonstrated powerful and promising development. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the pivotal role of DL in 6G, exploring the myriad opportunities and challenges that arise. Firstly, we present a detailed vision for DL in 6G, emphasizing areas such as adaptive resource allocation, intelligent network management, robust signal processing, ubiquitous edge intelligence, and endogenous security. Secondly, this paper reviews how DL models leverage their unique learning capabilities to solve complex service demands in 6G. The models discussed include Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN), Graph Neural Networks (GNN), Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), Transformer, Federated Learning (FL), and Meta Learning. Additionally, we examine the specific challenges each DL model faces within the 6G context. Moreover, we delve into the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC), examining its development and impact within the 6G framework. Finally, this paper culminates in a detailed discussion of ten critical open problems in integrating DL with 6G, setting the stage for future research and development in this field.

Semantic segmentation is an important yet unsolved problem in aerial scenes understanding. One of the major challenges is the intense variations of scenes and object scales. In this article, we propose a novel multi-scale aware-relation network (MANet) to tackle this problem in remote sensing. Inspired by the process of human perception of multi-scale (MS) information, we explore discriminative and diverse MS representations. For discriminative MS representations, we propose an inter-class and intra-class region refinement (IIRR) method to reduce feature redundancy caused by fusion. IIRR utilizes the refinement maps with intra-class and inter-class scale variation to guide MS fine-grained features. Then, we propose multi-scale collaborative learning (MCL) to enhance the diversity of MS feature representations. The MCL constrains the diversity of MS feature network parameters to obtain diverse information. Also, the segmentation results are rectified according to the dispersion of the multilevel network predictions. In this way, MANet can learn MS features by collaboratively exploiting the correlation among different scales. Extensive experiments on image and video datasets, which have large-scale variations, have demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed MANet.

Optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image registration is important for multimodal remote sensing image information fusion. Recently, deep matching networks have shown better performances than traditional methods of image matching. However, due to significant differences between optical and SAR images, the performances of existing deep learning methods still need to be further improved. This article proposes a self-distillation feature learning network (SDNet) for optical and SAR image registration, improving performance from network structure and network optimization. First, we explore the impact of different weight-sharing strategies on optical and SAR image matching. Then, we design a partially unshared feature learning network for multimodal image feature learning. It has fewer parameters than the fully unshared network and has more flexibility than the fully shared network. In addition, the limited binary supervised information (matching or nonmatching) is insufficient to train the deep matching networks for optical-SAR image registration. Thus, we propose a self-distillation feature learning method to exploit more similarity information for deep network optimization enhancement, such as the similarity ordering between a series of nonmatching patch pairs. The exploited rich similarity information will significantly enhance network training and improve matching accuracy. Finally, existing deep learning methods brute-force make the matching features of the optical and SAR image patches similar, which will lead to the loss of discriminative information and degeneration of the matching performances. Thus, we build an auxiliary task reconstruction learning to optimize the feature learning network to keep more discriminative information. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method on multimodal image registration.
