Biography

Dr. Patrick Valere Tsouh Fokou received his M.Sc. in Biochemistry and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry–Pharmacology from the University of Yaounde 1, focusing on the biochemistry and natural product inhibitors of the malaria parasite and its cysteine protease, falcipain 2. He obtained a lecturer position at the University of Bamenda after completing his postdoctoral training in drug discovery and a one-year appointment as a postdoctoral research scientist in the field of antimicrobial drug development at the Yaounde–Bielefeld Bilateral Graduate School Natural Products with Antiparasitic and Antibacterial Activity (YaBiNaPA). Much of his career was spent researching natural products as drugs in the context of malaria, leishmaniasis, trypanosomiasis, toxoplasmosis, Buruli ulcer, tuberculosis, and cancer. He is the lab manager for the University of Yaounde 1, AntiMicrobial and Biocontrol Agents Unit's drug discovery arm, which investigated biodiversity as a source of lead molecules for drug development. These efforts resulted in the publication of numerous research articles on biologically active natural and synthetic products. He has written review articles and book chapters on pharmacology with natural products. He has also mentored doctoral students and supervised postgraduate and undergraduate students at both national and international levels over the years.
