This paper introduces a novel approach to deal with the multi-objective optimization of a two-stage bevel helical gearbox by applying the Taguchi method and Grey Relation Analysis (GRA). The goal of the study is to find optimal main design factors that minimize the gearbox volume and maximize the gearbox efficiency. To accomplish this, five main design parameters were selected: the coefficients of wheel face width (CWFW) of the bevel and the helical gear sets, the allowable contact stresses (ACS) of the first and the second stages, and the gear ratio of the first stage. Furthermore, two single targets were investigated: minimum gearbox volumes, and maximum gearbox efficiency. Also, the multi-objective optimization problem is solved through two steps: Step 1 for closing the gap between variable levels and Step 2 for determining the optimal main design factors. The study’s findings were used to introduce the optimum values of five major design parameters for designing a two-stage helical gearbox.

In mechanism design with symmetrical or asymmetrical motions, obtaining high precision of the input path given by working requirements of mechanisms can be a challenge for dimensional optimization. This study proposed a novel hybrid-combined differential evolution (DE) and Jaya algorithm for the dimensional synthesis of four-bar mechanisms with symmetrical motions, called HCDJ. The suggested algorithm uses modified initialization, a hybrid-combined mutation between the classical DE and Jaya algorithm, and the elitist selection. The modified initialization allows generating initial individuals, which are satisfied with Grashof’s condition and consequential constraints. In the hybrid-combined mutation, three differential groups of mutations are combined. DE/best/1 and DE/best/2, DE/current to best/1 and Jaya operator, and DE/rand/1, and DE/rand/2 belong to the first, second, and third groups, respectively. In the second group, DE/current to best/1 is hybrid with the Jaya operator. Additionally, the elitist selection is also applied in HCDJ to find the best solutions for the next generation. To validate the feasibility of HCDJ, the numerical examples of the symmetrical motion of four-bar mechanisms are investigated. From the results, the proposed algorithm can provide accurate optimal solutions that are better than the original DE and Jaya methods, and its solutions are even better than those of many other algorithms that are available in the literature.

This paper presents a general framework to design a cam profile using the finite element method from given displacements of the follower. The arbitrarily complex cam profile is described by Lagrangian finite elements, which are formed by the connectivity of nodes. In order to obtain the desired profile, a penalty-type functional that enforces the prescribed displacement of the follower is proposed. Additionally, in order to ensure convexity of the functional, a numerical stabilization scheme is used. The nodal positions are then obtained by solving a nonlinear system of equations resulting from minimizing the total functional. The geometrical accuracy of the cam profile can be controlled by the number of finite elements. A case study is considered to illustrate the flexibility, accuracy, and robustness of the proposed approach.

Scissor lifts are widely used in industry. The selection of a configuration of lift table system plays an important role since this depends on the working requirements of the systems and also the type of lift object. In this paper, based on the parametric dimension technique, the mathematical model of the configuration and the load calculation for the double-stage scissor lifts, which depends on the design parameters, were investigated in order to enhance the operation of scissor lift systems (e.g., lifting height, loading, and stability). A 2D-model of the system was constructed and simulated in the Working Model software to verify the accuracy of the proposed method. The results obtained from the simulation indicate that by adjusting the mounting positions of cylinders, the elevation of the platform and reactions on joints of the components can be calculated, which assists in improving the performance of the system. Furthermore, the results also prove the practical significance in the calculating process and dimensional design of scissor lifts, especially for double-stage structures.

In practice, the cost of a gearbox plays a very important role in the trade. Therefore, reducing the cost of gearboxes is an important task not only when manufacturing the gearboxes but also when designing them. In order to reduce the cost of a gearbox, there are many solutions in which determining the optimal partial gear ratios of a gearbox is an effective measure. This is because it not only the size, the mass but also the cost of a gearbox depends greatly on the partial gear ratios. This work presents a method for calculating the cost function of two-stage helical gearboxes with second-stage double gear-sets based on the mass of the components that construct the gearbox. The cost objective function is minimized to achieve the optimal transmission ratios. Furthermore, screening experiments are carried out with nine important input parameters that have significant effects on the optimum transmission ratio of the second stage. These parameters are the total gearbox ratio, the coefficient of wheel face width of the first stage, coefficient of wheel face width of the second stage, the allowable contact stress of the first stage, the allowable contact stress of the second stage, the output torque, the cost of gearbox housing, the cost of gears, and the shaft cost. The experimental results of were analysed by using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) method with the help of Minitab 19 software. The results demonstrate that the effective weight of the input parameters and their interactions on the output response was investigated. Also, a regression model for computing the optimal transmission ratio of the second stage was proposed. This brings significance not only in the design process but also in manufacturing since the gearbox cost can decrease
